Overcoming Essentialism? Students’ Reflections on Learning Intercultural Communication Online

2022

The fields of intercultural communication (IC) and intercultural education are in flux and the paradigmatic shift is away from essentialist approaches on culture and interculturality towards seeing IC and interculturality as flexible, fluid, contradictory, political, and ideological constructs. This study presents a virtual exchange project, a joint introductory course on IC between a Finnish university and a French university. One of the objectives of the course was to provide students with a more critical, non-essentialist perspective on interculturality. This study presents an analysis of 32 students’ texts (learning logs) that are processed qualitatively using content analysis to find a…

The Cultural Translation Industry

2019

Since cultures are liquid processes which consist in partially-shared and evolving frames of reference being used creatively for sensemaking in human interactions, any attempt to fix and systematise their description with a view to transposition from one culture to another seems doomed to fail. This is especially problematic for web localisation, defined as “taking a product and making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to the target locale (country/region and language) where it will be used and sold” (LISA 2003), since the localisation industry claims, in effect, to translate between cultures by adapting digital products to other national cultural frames. Tools purportedly used -…

Teaching and learning about interculturality in communication and management

2022

This chapter is based on the author's experience of designing, setting up and running a 2-year English-taught MA programme in intercultural management for international students at the University of Burgundy, France. The programme seeks to train the next generation of intercultural specialists, with a critical, interpretivist and non-essentialising view of the way that individuals use cultures and identities to communicate in organisational settings. Going beyond traditional national-level or competence-based approaches to intercultural management, it promotes theoretical and practice-based understanding of the communication processes at work within organisations, joint ventures or internat…

La viralité dans l’espace public numérique

2018

Communication and PR from a Cross-Cultural Standpoint

2012

How should we approach cultural diversity in the workplace? Multinational corporations, transnational project teams and glocalised production and distribution processes raise challenging cultural issues for communication and PR professionals. Yet the complex nature of the communication processes involved means that existing models of cross-cultural or intercultural communication often seem inadequate to allow researchers or professionals get to grips with the complexity of the interactions encountered. This book aims to pinpoint and address the apparent limits of many traditional intercultural communi-cation research methods, when they are applied to real situations in the hybrid and cosmop…

Repenser l’intégration républicaine à l’aune de l’interculturalité

2018

2022

Performing Identities and Constructing Meaning in Interpersonal Encounters

2011

This paper presents a communicational semiopragmatics approach to the question of identity in interpersonal and intercultural communication. The model which we have developed (Boutaud, 2005, Frame, 2008) seeks to relate macro-level and micro-level approaches to communication (both in terms of culture and of identity), in order to take into account both the prefigured and the emergent aspects of meaning construction in an interpersonal encounter. The concept of identity is treated from a symbolic interactionist point of view, and more precisely within the theoretical framework of identity theory (Stryker, 1980, Stryker & Burke, 2000, Burke et al., 2003, Burke, 2004), applied to multiple iden…

Communication et Interculturation

2021

Interpersonal communication brings together individuals who try to make sense of one another in a given context. In this ongoing intersubjective process, they use culturally-structured knowledge and references to conjure up figures and styles rooted in identity-play. Whether in organisations, in the media, or in our open, cosmopolitan, liquid societies of late modernity, identities appear ever more present, ever more pressing. They are linked to the cultural traits that people use to “perform” and make sense of themselves and others in different social situations. The forms, figures and styles in circulation are mediated and updated through these everyday symbolic interactions, within a soc…

Performing cultures. Sur l'interculturalité de la communication

2011

Leader of my Heart!

2015

The first decade of the twenty-first century has witnessed the emergence of ‘new’ media technologies which have contributed to reshaping the relationships between politicians, journalists and the general public in Western democracies and around the world (Fox and Ramos, 2012; Lilleker and Jackson, 2013). After diverse early attempts in several countries to harness these new tools during election periods, their use by Barack Obama’s campaign team in the 2008 US presidential elections is often cited as one of the first examples in which they appeared to contribute positively to mobilising sympathisers and party activists around the campaign (Thimm, 2011). In the subsequent 2010 UK general ele…

Engineering victory and defeat: the role of social bots on Twitter during the French PresidentialElections

2018

International audience; The electoral campaigns of both Trump and Macron took place in a climate marked by accusations of “fake news”, manipulation of social media and personal attacks. Previous research has even shown that the same automated Twitter accounts were used to spread rumours to discredit both Hillary Clinton and later Emmanuel Macron, notably during the “Macron Leaks” scandal (Ferrara, 2017), which has led to accusations of orchestrated foreign infiltration in at least the French presidential campaign. Although it is difficult to distinguish (legitimate) foreign discussions of (rumours related to) French presidential candidates on Twitter on the one hand and intentional meddling…

Citizen Participation and Political Communication in a Digital World.

2015

International audience; The arrival of the participatory web 2.0 has been hailed by many as a media revolution, bringing with it new tools and possibilities for direct political action. Through specialised online platforms, mainstream social media or blogs, citizens in many countries are increasingly seeking to have their voices heard online, whether it is to lobby, to support or to complain about their elected representatives. Politicians, too, are adopting "new media" in specific ways, though they are often criticised for failing to seize the full potential of online tools to enter into dialogue with their electorates. Bringing together perspectives from around the world, this volume exam…

Doing (No) Good? Specialist and non-Specialist Perspectives on Applied Interculturalism

2018

International audience; While academics may question the ethical underpinnings of the contact hypothesis and the othering discourse it may promote, many non-specialists are unaware both of this debate and of associated questions of cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. In the context of an ongoing research project working with local migrant-support associations in Dijon, France, looking into formal and informal cultural awareness training for refugees and asylum seekers, this paper, based on interview data, will critically analyse the differing visions of the figure of “good interculturalist” and various implicit or explicit, purportedly ethically laudable motives of different parties invo…

The EU Election on Twitter

2015

In this chapter the political implications of social media and their affordances for political discourse are examined. The focus is on candidates’ Twitter usage during the 2014 EU elections in France and in Germany. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of tweets collected during a period of four weeks have been carried out on the basis of the functional operator model of Twitter. The model serves as a framework for assessing users’ tweeting styles, which can range between personal-interactive and topical-informative. The comparison of French and German top candidates’ tweeting styles, which mainly appear to be „personal-interactive“, however questions the candidates’ alleged efforts to ent…

Teaching and learning about interculturality in 2020: reflections on current and future practices from a European University perspective

2020

International audience; 20 years of studying and teaching interculturality as a British expat in France have shaped the way I think about and teach interculturality applied to business settings in today’s mediatized world. Accusations of cultural appropriation, discrimination, religious and ethnic tensions, even genocides are among the challenges societies are currently facing, linked to identity claims and power dynamics, where “cultures” serve very often as a pretext for symbolic or physical violence. Yet, despite the lonely protests of a few academics, dominant media discourse, numerous politicians as well as “public opinion” in many countries all tend to legitimise the view that “cultur…

France

2015

This chapter deals with the development of public relations (PR) as a professional field in France, from 1945 to the late 1980s. Not initially considered as a strategic management function, French PR sought to gain legitimacy in its early years, implicitly differentiating itself from the model of North-American PR by which it was inspired, through a focus on the ethical dimension of the profession and its distinction from the related professions of journalism and advertising. Professional associations reflected these concerns and played a key role in helping the profession construct its identity. Social evolutions, especially the civil unrest associated with May 1968, can also be seen to ha…

Beyond the Cultural Turn: A Critical Perspective on Culture-Discourse within Public Relations

2017

International audience; In 1992, Sriramesh and White (1992) pointed to the importance of culture for public relations. Two decades later, public relations scholars had answered their call in force (e.g., Bardhan & Weaver, 2011; Carayol & Frame, 2012; Edwards & Hodges, 2011; Sriramesh & Vercic, 2012). Sriramesh and other PR scholars have criticized much previous public relations research for its focus on the work of Hofstede and cultural characteristics that are apparently common across countries (Sriramesh, 2009), rather than approaches which present culture as a social phenomenon on the level of the social group (Frame, 2012), or as a communication resource or tool-kit (Swidler, 1986). Cultural Contagion from Micro to Macro: A Semiopragmatics Approach

2017

International audience; Although cultures are a group-based process, cultural change occurs on the level of the individual, through micro-level interactions which give rise to new representations. Based on the semiopragmatics approach to communications, this contribution will theorize this process of cultural evolution, linked to the phenomenon of contagion, notably assisted by media and internet-based communication, based on examples of recent emerging cultural trends.

Viral Tweets, Fake News and Social Bots in Post-Factual Politics

2018

•PurposeIn the wake of Brexit and the 2016 US Presidential Elections, “post-factual” society has been heralded as a new era of political communications, where the digital public sphere plays a central role, in spreading “viral” contents and “fake news”, with the help of automated accounts or “social bots”. This paper seeks to define these terms and the methods by which the phenomena they commonly designate might be studied, in order to characterise the dynamics of political deliberation during the 2017 French Presidential Elections on Twitter, the online platform most commonly used for political communication in France. It thus aims to better understand the mechanisms by which information b…

ESCR Review: Citizenship and Politics

2020

This chapter describes the analyses and results for the ESRC Domain of Citizenship and Politics, guided by two main questions: How digital technology impacts on our autonomy, agency, and privacy; Whether and how our understanding of citizenship is evolving in the digital age. It first provides an initial overview of the major insights from the literature review and analysis, the Delphi surveys, and workshop discussions about the relevant range of the concepts of citizenship and politics in a digital age. Over time the literature shows a shift from issues of public sphere and use of the Internet by government and candidates to more focus on political participation and engagement, especially …

Tweeting back: Innovative Political Contestation in Viral Posts on Twitter during the 2017 French Presidential Elections

2020

International audience; This chapter explores innovative forms of political communication among citizens on Twitter, in the context of the 2017 French Presidential Elections. It notably questions the degree to which ‘contagious’ social network communication may be impacting discourse on politics in the public sphere, related to the debate around ‘fake news’. From a corpus of over 50M election-related tweets, the chapter identifies those which were most widely retweeted during the second round of the French elections. Through qualitative analysis of 197 manually coded ‘viral’ tweets, it seeks to characterise their contents in this particular context, in order to fill a gap in the literature …

Personnel politique et médias socionumériques: nouveaux usages et mythes 2.0

2017

Le tweet stratégique: Use of Twitter as a PR tool by French politicians

2015

Edited By Dejan Verčič, Ana Tkalac Verčič, Krishnamurthy Sriramesh and Jon White; National audience; This study, adopting a qualitative approach to political communication, looks in depth at the way Twitter is used as a PR tool by five French politicians. It suggests that the microblogging service plays a specific role in allowing them to monitor public opinion and current affairs, to interact with voters, journalists, stakeholders and other politicians and to disseminate information. The way politicians use Twitter is influenced by concerns of impression management (content and style of tweets), and also various institutional, political and social/symbolic limits, which contribute to revea…
