First Compton imaging tests with i-TED

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the Compton imaging capabilities of a novel gamma-ray Total-Energy Detector called i-TED. The latter is intended for neutron-capture cross-sections measurements of astrophysical interest, thereby enhancing detection sensitivity by means of the simultaneous combination of Time-of-Flight with Compton-imaging techniques. The developed i-TED demonstrator comprises five position-sensitive radiation detection modules of high energy resolution, which feature an overall position-sensitive field-of-view of 125 cm2, and thus a high efficiency. Beta decay studies with the total absorption technique: past, present and future

Measurements of beta decay reduced transition probabilities are particularly relevant in nuclei far from the stability line. It has been demonstrated that a proper measurement of this quantity requires the use of the total absorption technique, which has become a reliable tool in recent years, thanks to the increased efficiency of the associated spectrometers and the development of new analysis techniques. In this paper, we present a brief history of the past and present use of these detectors and how they might be developed in the future.

Nucleon transfer via (d,p) using TIARA with a24Ne radioactive beam

NESTER; The first physics results measured using the TIARA array are reported. The reaction $^{24}$Ne(d,p)$^{25}$Ne has been studied in inverse kinematics with a radioactive beam of $^(24)$Ne provided by SPIRAL at GANIL. TIARA is very compact with a high geometrical coverage for charged particles, and is designed specifically for the study of transfer reactions in inverse kinematics, with radioactive beams. From the (d,p) differential cross sections, the ground state of $^{25}$Ne is assigned to have $J^\pi$ = $1/2^+$ and the lowest states with $J^\pi$ = $5/2^+$ and $3/2^+$ are tentatively identified at excitation energies of 1.70 and 2.05 (±0.05) MeV, respectively. Deformation of Sr and Rb isotopes close to theN=Zline viaβ-decay studies using the total absorption technique

A study of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions $B$(GT) in the beta decay of ${}^{78}$Sr and ${}^{76,78}$Rb has been made using a total absorption spectrometer (TAS). Following the success in deducing the sign of the deformation for ${}^{76}$Sr, a similar approach is adopted for ${}^{78}$Sr based on a comparison of the measured $B$(GT) with quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations. This work confirms its previously expected prolate deformation in the ground state. Conclusions about the structure of the odd-odd ${}^{76,78}$Rb isotopes have been drawn based on their measured $B$(GT) distributions.

Two-phonon octupole excitation inGd146

Based on experimental evidence from the $^{144}\mathrm{Sm}$($\ensuremath{\alpha},2n$) reaction, the $3484.7$-keV ${6}^{+}$ state in $^{146}\mathrm{Gd}$ is identified as the highest-spin member of the ${3}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{3}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ two-phonon octupole quartet. A previously unknown $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ line of $1905.8$ keV and $E3$ character feeding the ${3}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ octupole state has been observed. Mass Measurements with the CSS2 and CIME cyclotrons at GANIL

Commune avec ACEN; This paper presents two original direct mass-measurement techniques developed at GANIL using the CSS2 and CIME cyclotrons as high-resolution mass spectrometers. The mass measurement with the CSS2 cyclotron is based on a time-of-flight method along the spiral trajectory of the ions inside the cyclotron. The atomic mass excesses of 68Se and 80Y recently measured with this technique are -53.958(246) MeV and -60.971(180) MeV, respectively. Reactor Decay Heat inPu239: Solving theγDiscrepancy in the 4–3000-s Cooling Period

The {beta} feeding probability of {sup 102,104,105,106,107}Tc, {sup 105}Mo, and {sup 101}Nb nuclei, which are important contributors to the decay heat in nuclear reactors, has been measured using the total absorption technique. We have coupled for the first time a total absorption spectrometer to a Penning trap in order to obtain sources of very high isobaric purity. Our results solve a significant part of a long-standing discrepancy in the {gamma} component of the decay heat for {sup 239}Pu in the 4-3000 s range.

Gamma-ray position reconstruction in large lanthanum-halide crystals with SiPM readout: analytical vs. neural-network algorithms

The main objective of this research was to achieve an excellent gamma-ray position reconstruction with very large monolithic scintillation crystals coupled to pixelated silicon photosensors. Analyzing the scintillation-light distribution measured along the SiPM-pixels one can get a sub-pixel accuracy for the position reconstruction. The quality of the latter depends on both the characteristics of the crystal-photosensor assembly, and the goodness of the algorithm used to reconstruct the gamma-ray hit location. Direct mass measurements ofSe68andY80

The masses of neutron-deficient nuclides near the $N=Z$ line with $A=64\text{\ensuremath{-}}80$ have been determined using a direct time-of-flight technique which employed a cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The measured atomic masses for $^{68}\mathrm{Se}$ and $^{80}\mathrm{Y}$ were 67.9421(3) u and 79.9344(2) u, respectively. The new values agree with the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation. The result for $^{68}\mathrm{Se}$ confirms that this nucleus is a waiting point of the rp-process, and that for $^{80}\mathrm{Y}$ resolves the conflict between earlier measurements. Migration of Nuclear Shell Gaps Studied in thed(Ne24,pγ)Ne25Reaction

The transfer of neutrons onto 24Ne has been measured using a reaccelerated radioactive beam of 24Ne to study the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The unusual raising of the first 3/2+ level in 25Ne and its significance in terms of the migration of the neutron magic number from N=20 to N=16 is put on a firm footing by confirmation of this state's identity. The raised 3/2+ level is observed simultaneously with the intruder negative parity 7/2- and 3/2- levels, providing evidence for the reduction in the N=20 gap. Total absorption study of theβdecay of102,104,105Tc

The $\ensuremath{\beta}$-feeding probabilities for three important contributors to the decay heat in nuclear reactors, namely ${}^{102,104,105}$Tc, have been measured using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. For the measurements, sources of very high isobaric purity have been obtained using a Penning trap (JYFLTRAP). A detailed description of the data analysis is given and the results are compared with high-resolution measurements and theoretical calculations.
