Freedom and Necessity in The Winter’s Tale

From the first expository scene, The Winter’s Tale exhibits a concern with necessity, either through the use of the word itself, its derivatives (necessities, necessary), and their synonyms (needful, required) or through the notion of what “must” happen, what “cannot but” happen. The recurrence of such terms conveys a sense that this is a world where no one is free, and every action is dictated by force of circumstance. This is reinforced by the widespread use of the traditional imagery of fate. Yet the characters of the play are reluctant to submit to necessity. ‘My Language! Heavens!’: Strange Tongues and the Denial of Mimesis in The Tempest

The Tempest est la dernière pièce « italienne » de Shakespeare. Cet article se penche sur quelques unes des conséquences poétiques et métaphysiques de la convention qui consiste à faire correspondre l’anglais de la pièce à l’italien que sont sensés parler les personnages. Nous montrerons que cette convention est un paramètre essentiel de l’action dramatique et qu’elle contribue à la mise en évidence du caractère fondamentalement « Autre » de la langue du théâtre. Dans The Tempest, l’imbrication d’une langue inconnue et d’une langue familière débouche par métonymie et par métaphore sur un déni du principe classique de mimesis.

“Never shake thy gory locks at me” (Macbeth, III.iv.50-51): Objecting to Gestures in Macbeth

International audience; Shakespeare's Macbeth displays a pattern of characters objecting to gestures, be it others' or their own. This includes Macbeth refusing to shake hands with his opponent before the battle, his words to Banquo's ghost quoted in the title above, Banquo's own puzzlement at the weird sisters' placing a finger over their lips, the doctor's suspicions at Lady Macbeth's rubbing her hands and sleepwalking, as well as Malcom's request that Macduff not pull his hat over his eyes. In many of these cases, gesture is pitted against speech, which seems to undermine the classically-derived ideal of "suit[ing] the word to the action, the action to the word" (Hamlet, 3.2.16-18).
