Spectra and correlations of Λ andΛ¯produced in 340-GeV/cΣ−+Cand 260-GeV/cn+Cinteractions

2002

We have measured the production of strange baryons and antibaryons in 340-GeV/c Sigma /sup -/+C and 260-GeV/c n+C interactions. The single x/sub F/ distributions show the expected leading particle effect, and the single p/sub t//sup 2/ distributions show a distinct nonthermal behavior. The x/sub F/ distributions of Lambda - Lambda pairs indicate two different phase space distributions for the two coincident baryons. On the other hand two Lambda 's show identical distributions. Momentum conservation during the formation process may represent a significant source for the observed behavior.

Lowest- Q2 measurement of the γp → Δ reaction: Probing the pionic contribution

2006

To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are: M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model}) (10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-2.28 +/- 0.29_{stat+syst} +/- 0.20_{model})%, and Re(S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-4.81 +/- 0.27_{stat+syst} +/- 0.26_{model})%. No evidence for medium effects in the12C(e, e'p)11Bg.s. reaction

1995

The12C(e, e'p)11B g.s reaction has been measured in parallel and anti-parallel kinematics over ap m range of −120<p m<120 MeV/c at a centralT p of 90 MeV. In contrast to previous measurements at NIKHEF, both kinematics can be described without enhancement of the transverse form factor of the bound proton (η=0.98(5)). The spectroscopic factor for this transition as determined with the new Mainz data (S α =1.54(5)) is 22% smaller than the NIKHEF value.

Compton scattering from the free and bound proton at backward angles above π-threshold

1999

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the free proton at Theta(gamma)(lab) = 130.7 degrees in the energy region from 200 MeV to 410 MeV and far quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton bound in the deuteron at Theta(gamma)(lab) = 148.8 degrees in the energy region from 200 MeV to 290 MeV have been measured. The free proton data are in agreement with dispersion-theory predictions based on standard parameters. The difference of the proton polarizabilities has been extracted from the quasi-free data. Our result, - = [9.1 +/- 1.7(stat + syst) +/- 1.2(mod)] x 10(-4) fm(3), is in reasonable agreement with the world average of the free proton data if the backward spin polari…

Test of Low-Energy Theorems forH1(γ→,π0)H1in the Threshold Region

2001

The photon asymmetry in the reaction H-1(, pi (0))H-1 close to threshold has been measured for the first time with the photon spectrometer TAPS using linearly polarized photons from the tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The total and differential cross sections were also measured simultaneously with the photon asymmetry. This allowed determination of the S-wave and all three P-wave amplitudes. The first Virtual Compton Scattering experiment at MAMI

1999

Abstract Virtual Compton scattering, i.e. the exclusive reaction γ ∗ p → γ′p′ with γ ∗ denoting a virtual photon, provides new insights on the internal structure of the proton. Below π 0 production threshold, this experiment measures the generalized polarizabilities of the proton as defined by Guichon et al [1], [2] and Drechsel et al [3]. These new electromagnetic observables, functions of Q 2 , enlarge the concept of electric (α0 and magnetic (β) polarizabilities in Real Compton Scattering ( Q 2 =0) [4]. The first VCS experiment [5] of this kind was measured at the three spectrometer facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI for Q 2 =0.33 GeV 2 and we present in this paper the preliminary resu…

Noise and radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers exposed to electromagnetic and hadronic radiation

2009

For the electron arm tracking system in the KAOS spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI a detector based on 2 m long scintillating fibres read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is planned. Because of the detector's close proximity to the intense electron beam a study of noise and radiation damage in SiPM has been performed. A sample of devices was exposed directly to a 14 MeV electron beam and to a mixed radiation field in the experimental area. First noticeable effects are a large increase in the dark count rate and a severe loss of the gain uniformity.

Monte Carlo simulation of virtual Compton scattering below pion threshold

2006

This paper describes the Monte Carlo simulation developed specifically for the VCS experiments below pion threshold that have been performed at MAMI and JLab. This simulation generates events according to the (Bethe-Heitler + Born) cross section behaviour and takes into account all relevant resolution-deteriorating effects. It determines the `effective' solid angle for the various experimental settings which are used for the precise determination of photon electroproduction absolute cross section.

1996

The reactione+p →> e+π ++n at c.m. energyW=1125MeV and momentum transfer Q2=0.117GeV2/c2 has been measured. The transverse and longitudinal structure functions have been separated by varying the polarization of the virtual photon (Rosenbluth plot) with a 3 to 4% error. In addition the longitudinal-transverse interference term has been determined measuring the right-left asymmetry with an accuracy of 3%. The experimental data are compared to model calculations, and the sensitivity of the results to the axial and pion formfactors is discussed.

Abstract We report new precise p ( e → , e ′ p ) π 0 measurements at the peak of the Δ + ( 1232 ) resonance at Q 2 = 0.20 ( GeV / c ) 2 performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The new data are sensitive to both the electric (E2) and the Coulomb (C2) quadrupole amplitudes of the γ ∗ N → Δ transition. They yield precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios: CMR = ( − 5.09 ± 0.28 stat + sys ± 0.30 model ) % and EMR = ( − 1.96 ± 0.68 stat + sys ± 0.41 model ) % for M 1 + 3 / 2 = ( 39.57 ± 0.75 stat + sys ± 0.40 model ) ( 10 −3 / m π + ) . Precise measurements of the neutron magnetic form factor

1998

Abstract The neutron magnetic form factor Gmn has been determined via a measurement of the ratio of cross sections D(e,e′n) and D(e,e′p). The absolute detection efficiency of the neutron detector was measured with high accuracy using tagged neutrons produced from H(n,p)n elastic scattering by means of a high intensity neutron beam. This approach minimizes the model dependence and improves upon the weakest points of previous experiments. Data in the range q2=0.2–0.8 (GeV/c)2 with uncertainties of

Compton scattering by the proton through θcms = 75° and 90° in the Δ-resonance region

1997

Abstract Differential cross sections for Compton scattering by the proton have been measured in the energy interval between 200 and 500 MeV at scattering angles of θcms = 75° and θcms = 90° using the CATS, the CATS/TRAJAN, and the COPP setups with the Glasgow Tagger at MAMI (Mainz). The data are compared with predictions from dispersion theory using photo-meson amplitudes from the recent VPI solution SM95. The experiment and the theoretical procedure are described in detail. It is found that the experiment and predictions are in agreement as far as the energy dependence of the differential cross sections in the Δ-range is concerned. However, there is evidence that a scaling down of the reso…

Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on (208)Pb is extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball detector together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections, the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution are found to be c(n)=6.70±0.03(stat.)  fm and a(n)=0.55±0.01(stat.)(-0.03)(+0.02)(sys.)  fm, respectively, corresponding to a neutron skin thickness Δr(np)=0.15±0.03(stat.)(-0.03)(+0.01)(sys.)  fm. Measurement of GEp/GMp via polarization transfer at Q2 = 0.4 GeV /c2

2001

The polarization transfer from longitudinally polarized electrons to protons in the elastic scattering p( e, e' p) has been measured around Q2 = 0.4 (GeV/c)2 with the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. From this polarization transfer the ratio G Ep/(G Mp/μp) has been determined. The ratio is found to be slightly less than unity in agreement with recent results from other laboratories and from the Rosenbluth separation of cross-sections measured with unpolarized electrons.

First measurement of the polarisation transfer on the proton in the reactions $$H(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$ and $$D(\vec e,e'\vec p)$$

1995

The measurement of the polarisation transfer to the proton in the reactions\(H(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) and\(D(\vec e,e'\vec p)\) performed with longitudinally polarised electrons in quasi-free kinematics is presented. The coincidence measurement was executed atQ2≈8fm−2 using the 855 MeV, c.w. beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The recoil polarisation was determined by means of a carbon analyser. The experiment shows that the binding of the nucleon does not modify the polarisationPx of the recoil proton within an error ofΔPx/Px≈10%. The measured polarisation agrees with recent theoretical predictions. Implications for the measurement of the electric form factor of the neutron using the\(D(\vec e,e…

Beam-Helicity Asymmetries in Double-Pion Photoproduction off the Proton

2009

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz in the three isospin channels $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{+}\pi^0n$, $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{0}\pi^0p$ and $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}p$ . The circularly polarized photons, produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons, were tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Charged pions and the decay photons of $\pi^0$ mesons were detected in a $~4\pi$ electromagnetic calorimeter which combined the Crystal Ball detector with the TAPS detector. The precisely measured asymmetries are very sensitive to details of the production processes and are thus key observables in the modeling of the reaction d…

STATUS OF STRANGENESS ELECTRO-PRODUCTION AT MAMI

2009

At the Institut für Kernphysik in Mainz, Germany, the microtron MAMI has been upgraded to 1.5 GeV electron beam energy and can now be used to study strange hadronic systems. The magnetic spectrometer KAOS from GSI was dismantled and re-installed in the spectrometer facility operated by the A1 collaboration. The spectrometer's primary purpose is to study strangeness electro-production. Its compact design and its capability to detect negative and positive charged particles simultaneously under forward scattering angles complements the existing spectrometers. In 2008, an important milestone has been reached by the successful measurement of kaon production off a liquid hydrogen target. The ide…

High-Precision Determination of the Electric and Magnetic Form Factors of the Proton

2010

New precise results of a measurement of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. About 1400 cross sections were measured with negative four-momentum transfers squared up to Q^2=1 (GeV/c)^2 with statistical errors below 0.2%. The electric and magnetic form factors of the proton were extracted by fits of a large variety of form factor models directly to the cross sections. The form factors show some features at the scale of the pion cloud. The charge and magnetic radii are determined to be r_E=0.879(5)(stat.)(4)(syst.)(2)(model)(4)(group) fm and r_M=0.777(13)(stat.)(9)(syst.)(5)(model)(2)(group) fm.

Investigation of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations using the reaction in close to 4π geometry

1998

Abstract Two-proton correlations were studied in close to 4 π geometry using the reaction 12 C (e,e′pp) . The beam energy was 705 MeV, the energy transfer 225 MeV, and the three-momentum transfer 412 MeV/c. The electrons were observed in a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with protons observed in a BGO crystal ball. Missing energy and momentum, relative momentum and angular distributions were derived and compared with a factorized two-nucleon emission model. Soft-core correlation functions are favoured by the data.

Virtual Compton Scattering at MAMI γ*p→ γ1p1

1999

The virtual Compton scattering (VCS) is the electron scattering on a proton which radiates a real photon before being detected. The new observables, called Generalized Polarizabilities (GP), extracted from this VCS at threshold can be understood as the deformation of the charge and current distributions of the proton [1]. These GP are functions of the mass of the virtual photon Q2. In real Compton scattering (Q2 = 0), some polarizabilities of the nucleon are already measured [2]. With the VCS, we will generalize these observables by measuring them at different values of Q2.

A short-orbit spectrometer for low-energy pion detection in electroproduction experiments at MAMI

2017

A new Short-Orbit Spectrometer (SOS) has been constructed and installed within the experimental facility of the A1 collaboration at Mainz Microtron (MAMI), with the goal to detect low-energy pions. Model-independent separation of structure functions over an extended kinematical region

1994

A method for the separation of structure functions in (e, e′ p) experiments is proposed, which is an extension of the traditional Rosenbluth-type techniques of [1,2]. In our approach, we use a very flexible Ansatz to describe the structure functions within an extended kinematical regionG and determine its free parameters with a x2 minimization. The procedure is tested by pseudo data (12C(e, e′p)11Bg.s.) in the quasi-free region.

Measurement of propagation time dispersion in a scintillator

2007

One contribution to the time resolution of a scintillation detector is the signal time spread due to path length variations of the detected photons from a point source. In an experimental study a rectangular scintillator was excited by means of a fast pulsed ultraviolet laser at different positions along its longitudinal axis. Timing measurements with a photomultiplier tube in a detection plane displaced from the scintillator end face showed a correlation between signal time and tube position indicating only a small distortion of photon angles during transmission. The data is in good agreement with a Monte Carlo simulation used to compute the average photon angle with respect to the detecti…

Pion electroproduction in the 3He(e,é π+)3H reaction at intermediate energies

1997

Abstract The differential coincident pion electroproduction cross section in the 3 He(e,e π + ) 3 H reaction has been measured with high resolution with the three-spectrometer set-up at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) electron accelerator. Measurements were performed at the four incident energies E 0 = 855, 675, 600, and 555 MeV at fixed four-momentum transfer Q 2 = 0.045 GeV 2 , with the pions detected in parallel kinematics. This enables a separation of the measured cross section into the transverse and longitudinal structure functions by means of the Rosenbluth method. The experimental data are compared to model calculations, in which the elementary pion production amplitude includes the stan…

Incoherent neutral pion photoproduction on 12C.

2007

We present the first detailed measurement of incoherent photoproduction of neutral pions to a discrete state of a residual nucleus. The C-12(gamma,pi(0))C-12(4.4 MeV)* reaction has been studied with the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI employing a new technique which uses the large solid angle Crystal Ball detector both as a pi(0) spectrometer and to detect decay photons from the excited residual nucleus. The technique has potential applications to a broad range of future nuclear measurements with the Crystal Ball and similar detector systems elsewhere. Such data are sensitive to the propagation of the Delta in the nuclear medium and will give the first information on matter transition form fa…

Measurement of coherent and incoherent π0 photoproduction off the deuteron with tagged photons up to the Δ region

2000

Coherent and incoherent pi(0) photoproduction off the deuteron has been measured for incident quasi-monoenergetic photons in the energy range from pi(0) threshold up to 300 MeV using the TAPS setup together with the Glasgow tagger at MAMI. Integral and differential cross sections over the full angular range have been obtained. Coherent and incoherent production are found to exhibit very different angle and energy dependences. The sum of both processes, the total pi(0) production off the deuteron is quantitatively extremely well described by a pure quasifree model, whereas the data for coherent and incoherent channels necessitate strong FSI effects for their description. Finally upper limits…

Silicon Detector Telescope for proton detection in electron scattering reactions at MAMI

2012

Abstract A new Silicon Detector Telescope has been constructed and installed within the experimental facility of the A1 collaboration at Mainz Microtron, with the goal to detect low-energy protons. It consists of seven silicon layers for energy and angle measurement and a plastic scintillator for triggering purposes. The detector subtends a solid angle up to 88 msr, depending on the distance from the target and covers the proton kinetic energy range of 25–41  MeV with the mean energy resolution σ E = 0.47 MeV , operating at 500 kHz. Digital signal processing methods applied for energy reconstruction have been important for keeping the acceptable energy resolution at high counting rates. The…

Polarization transfer in the 4HeH reaction

2001

Abstract Polarization transfer in the 4He ( e → ,e′ p → ) 3 H reaction at a Q2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium modification of the proton form factor based on a quark–meson coupling model.

Determination of the neutron electric form factor in the D(e,e′n)p reaction and the influence of nuclear binding

1999

The electric form factor of the neutron GE,n has been determined at the Mainz Microtron MAMI at the low momentum transfer Q2= 0.15 (GeV/c)2 in a measurement of the recoil polarisation ratio Px/Pz in the quasifree reaction D(e,e′n)p. At this Q2 the influence of the nuclear binding is strong. A purely kinematical model is used to get some insight into the effect of the initial Fermi momentum distribution of the neutron. The influence of the final state interaction is determined quantitatively by a model of Arenhovel et al.. After the corresponding corrections a value of GE,n(0.15 (GeV/c)2) = 0.0481±0.0065stat±0.0053syst is obtained.

With an exact solution of the Faddeev equation for the 3 He -ground state and an approximate treatment of final state interactions in the continuum good agreement is found with the experimental data.

Resonant transition radiation in the X-ray region from a low emittance 855 MeV electron beam

1994

The interference of transition radiation coherently produced from a periodic stack of four polyimide foils of 7.2 μm thickness and a separation of 162 μm was investigated. This stack has been brought into the low emittance (3 π nm rad) electron beam of the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI. Transition radiation was observed in the energy range from 2 to 15 keV with a LN2-cooled pin photodiode. A good energy resolution of 0.8 keV and angular resolution of 0.15 mrad was achieved simultaneously allowing for the first time to quantitatively study the interference pattern. Good agreement with theoretical calculations is found. Prospects to exploit transition radiation in the x-ray region from a low e…

The Electric Formfactor of the Neutron Determined by Quasielastic Scattering of Longitudinally Polarized Electrons from 3He and 2D

1996

The recent availability of polarized electron beams at electron accelerator laboratories adds another technique to probing the electromagnetic structure of nuclear matter [1]. The present paper discusses the application of polarized electron scattering to the determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron. Its value at medium energies is only poorly known hitherto. Electron scattering is dominated by interaction with the neutron magnetic moment. Therefore the contribution of the charge distribution to the scattering cross section is scarcely detectable in case of unpolarized collision partners. The elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized neutron ta…

Measurements of the antiproton-proton elastic cross section in the beam momentum range between 180 and 600 MeV/c

1991

The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.

Novel digital K-edge imaging system with transition radiation from an 855-MeV electron beam

2001

A novel K-edge imaging method has been developed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI aiming at a very efficient use of the transition radiation (TR) flux generated by the external 855-MeV electron beam in a foil stack. A fan-like quasi-monochromatic hard X-ray beam is produced from the /spl plusmn/1-mrad-wide TR cone with a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) crystal. The absorption of the object in front of a 30 mm/spl times/10 mm pn charge-coupled device (pn-CCD) photon detector is measured at every pixel by a broad-band energy scan around the K-absorption edge. This is accomplished by a synchronous variation of the lateral crystal position and the electron beam direction which defines also…

Two neutral pion photoproduction off the proton between threshold and 800 MeV

1997

Abstract The photoproduction of two neutral pions off the proton has been studied for incident photon energies between E γ = 309 MeV (threshold) and 792 MeV with the TAPS photon spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Both 3γ- and 4γ-events have been analysed in order to deduce the total p ( γ , 2 π 0 ) p cross section. The total cross section is less than 300 nb between threshold and ⋍ 460 MeV, beyond which it starts to rise to a maximum value of about 11 μb at around 750 MeV. For the highest energies it starts to decrease again. The 4γ-sample has been used to reconstruct 2 neutral pions from the above reaction channel by an invariant mass and a missing mass analysis. First measurement of the electric formfactor of the neutron in the exclusive quasielastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized 3He

1994

Abstract A first measurement of the asymmetry in quasielastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized 3 He gas target in coincidence with the knocked out neutron is reported. This measurement was made feasible by the cw beam of the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI. It allows a determination of the electric formfactor of the neutron G E n independent of binding effects to first order. At Q 2 =0.31 ( GeV /c) 2 two asymmetries A ∥ ( S He ∥ q ) and A ⊥ ( S He ⊥ q ) have been measured giving A ∥ =(−7.40±0.73)% and A ⊥ =(0.89±0.30)% . The ratio A ⊥ / A ∥ is independent of the absolute value of the electron and target polarization and yields G E n =0.035±0.012±0.005.

The experiment was performed at the 855 MeV c. w. microtron MAMI at Mainz. The degree of polarization of the electron beam and of the gaseous 3He target were each about 50%. Antiproton-Proton Cross Sections at Small Momenta

The liquid hydrogen target is placed in the vacuum tank, and the vacuum is directly connected to the beam line. The incident beam is defined by thin scintillators also placed in the vacuum. Elastic and inelastic photon scattering from 12C

1994

Abstract The elastic and inelastic photon scattering from 12 C was investigated in the energy range of the Δ-resonance ( E γ = 200–500 MeV) at a scattering angle of 40°. The experiment was performed with the tagged photon facility at the cw electron accelerator MAMI ( E e − = 855 MeV). By using a large NaI(Tl) detector having an energy resolution of 1.5%, the elastic scattering could be separated from the inelastic process to the first excited state ( E x = 4.44 MeV of 12 C. The differential cross section for the coherent scattering is compared with a simple static ansatz, that uses the known charge form factor, and with a recent Δ-hole calculation.

How narrow is the linewidth of parametric X-ray radiation?

1997

Parametric x-ray or quasi-Cherenkov radiation is produced by the passage of an electron through a crystal. A critical absorber technique has been employed to investigate its linewidth. Experiments have been performed with the 855MeV electron beam from the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Thin absorber foils were mounted in front of a CCD camera serving as a position sensitive photon detector. Upper limits of the linewidth of 1.2 and 3.5eV were determined for the (111) and (022) reflections of silicon at photon energies of 4966 and 8332eV. These limits originate from geometrical line broadening effects that can be optimized to reach the ultimate limit given by the finite length of the wave train. {copy…

Transition radiation in the x-ray region from a low emittance 855 MeV electron beam

The radiator was a stack of 30 polyimide foils of 25 μm thickness and 75 μm separation and the monochromator a highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite crystal. The intrinsic bandwidth was measured with a critical absorption technique to be 100 eV. On the basis of these experiments a photon flux of 4⋅109/mm2s over an illuminated area of 5.7×125 mm2 can be expected from an optimized beryllium radiator at a beam current of 100 μA.
