Decay studies in the A∼225 Po-Fr region from the DESPEC campaign at GSI in 2021

The HISPEC-DESPEC collaboration aims at investigating the struc-ture of exotic nuclei formed in fragmentation reactions with decay spectroscopymeasurements, as part of the FAIR Phase-0 campaign at GSI. This paper reportson first results of an experiment performed in spring 2021, with a focus on beta-decaystudies in the Po-Fr nuclei in the 220 < A <230 island of octupole deformationexploiting the DESPEC setup. Ion-beta correlations and fast-timing techniques arebeing employed, giving an insight into this difficult-to-reach region. peerReviewed

Indirect chronology method employing rare earth elements to identify Sagunto Castle mortar construction periods

A novel indirect chronology method has been developed to identify Sagunto Castle construction periods. The method is based on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine rare earth elements (REE) and other trace elements in mortars. Additionally, a no destructive geochemical analysis based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was employed for major elements determination. Collected chemical data were processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight any differences among the mortars belonging to different buildings and construction periods. The results show that PCA analysis permits to discriminate construction periods according to mortar sample REE …

Fast scanning nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry by spectrum demodulation

We demonstrate a spectrum demodulation technique allowing for rapid imaging in scanning nitrogen-vacancy center magnetometry. Our method relies on a periodic excitation of the electron spin resonance by wide-band frequency sweeps at a kilohertz rate combined with a phase-locked detection of the photoluminescence signal. The technique is robust against changes in spectrum shape and photoluminescence intensity, and is readily extended by a frequency feedback to enable real-time tracking of the spin resonance. Fast scanning magnetometry is especially useful for samples where the signal dynamic range is large, of order millitesla, such as for ferromagnets or ferrimagnets. We demonstrate our met…

Chemical and mineralogical analyses on stones from Sagunto Castle (Spain)

Abstract For the first time, an archaeometric study was carried out on the carbonate rock ashlars of the Sagunto Castle. The studied site is one of the most important and best preserved Spanish archaeological and architectural monuments, characterized by different construction phases from the Roman period to Modern Ages. Forty samples collected from thirteen different structures of Sagunto Castle and two quarries, located in the Sagunto's hill were used for comparative purposes. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine their mineralogical and elemental composition. The obtained data show similar chemical…

On the Origin of Light Emission in Silicon Rich Oxide Obtained by Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition

Silicon Rich Oxide (SRO) has been considered as a material to overcome the drawbacks of silicon to achieve optical functions. Various techniques can be used to produce it, including Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (LPCVD). In this paper, a brief description of the studies carried out and discussions of the results obtained on electro-, cathode-, and photoluminescence properties of SRO prepared by LPCVD and annealed at 1,100°Care presented. The experimental results lead us to accept that SRO emission properties are due to oxidation state nanoagglomerates rather than to nanocrystals. The emission mechanism is similar to Donor-Acceptor decay in semiconductors, and a wide emission spectr…

Direct determination of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium in water by flow injection flame atomic spectroscopy, using a dilution chamber

A simple procedure to carry out the direct analysis of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium in water by flow injection analysis (FIA) using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or flame photometry (FP) has been developed, using a well stirred dilution chamber to extend the calibration range, and both a double injector and the merging zone technique to add a lanthanum solution to samples and standards. The results obtained in the analysis of real samples agree with those found by a batch flame atomic procedure. The use of the dilution chamber makes it possible to carry out the calibration using the dilution profile of a single concentrate standard for each element, and an empirical…

In vivo and in vitro effects of nickel and cadmium on the plasmalemma ATPase from rice (Oryza sativa L.) shoots and roots

Abstract Plasmalemma vesicles isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L.) shoots and roots were used to study the effect of different nickel and cadmium concentrations on the Mg2+-ATPase activity. In vivo application of the metals for 5 or 10 days resulted in a stimulation of the enzyme activity in shoots, while either increases or decreases were observed in roots depending on the concentration and the type of ion tested. In contrast, an inhibitory effect was always observed on shoot and root plasmalemma ATPase activity when these ions were applied in vitro. At the organ level, the content of Cd in plants treated with 0.5 mM metal was higher than that of Ni, especially in roots. No correlation bet…
