Teaching Language and Literature: A Question of Balance?

2015

Abstract Regarding the teaching of Catalan, four textbooks were created in the 1970s and 80s, which included a complete work of literature, with numerous grammar and lexical commentaries, and exercises about the literary text. The author who is the link between these books is the grammarian Albert Jane i Riera, a writer and linguist who has been a leading figure in Catalan culture as the editor of the children's magazine Cavall Fort . Our aim with this synchronic and diachronic study is to vindicate the importance of the educational proposals we have analysed, as well as the appropriateness and the need of teaching language and literature to regain and consolidate their mutually enriching r…

Romanian Folk Literature in Our Classes: A Proposal for the Development of Intercultural Competence

2015

Abstract The present research highlights the ways in which folk literature, this valuable tool that contributes to students’ formation from both a human and literary perspective, can promote intercultural competence in class and foster a better integration within the community, while consolidating favorable attitudes towards interculturality. We share Rodriguez Almodovar's view (2009), according to which the folk story makes the geographic space expand; it channels affectivity, while guiding the learning process towards the acceptance of social values that are representative for each culture. The objectives of our study are focused, on the one hand, on improving intercultural competence amo…

Language Learning Methodology for Adults: A Study of Linguistic Transfer

2014

Abstract The purpose of the present research is to bring together the evidence on transfer in adult L2 and L3 language acquisition and investigate the use and the relationship between languages in contact. The role of linguistic transfer ( Odlin, 1989 ) i.e. the imposition of previously learned patterns onto a new learning situation, has a facilitation or inhibition effect on the learner's progress in mastering a new language (L2 or L3). Our findings reveal that the cross-linguistic influence occurs both from the direction of the L2 to the L3 and from the L3 to the L2 ( Odlin, 2003 , Jarvis and Pavlenko, 2008 ). In the case of our participants, in the acquisition of L2 as the foreign langua…
