Measuring threshold and latency of motion perception on a swinging bed.

2020

Introduction Our objective was to develop and to evaluate a system to measure latency and threshold of pendular motion perception based on a swinging bed. Materials and methods This prospective study included 30 healthy adults (age: 32 ± 12 years). All subjects were tested twice with a 10 min. interval. A second trial was conducted 2 to 15 days after. A rehabilitation swinging bed was connected to an electronic device emitting a beep at the beginning of each oscillation phase with an adjustable time lag. Subjects were blindfolded and auditory cues other than the beep were minimized. The acceleration threshold was measured by letting the bed oscillate freely until a natural break and asking…

Design and prototyping of a magnetic actuator based permanent magnets for microbead navigation in viscous environment

2017

International audience; For actuating the magnetic microrobots, two types of magnetic actuation technologies have been used during the last past years. These magnetic technologies may be either electromagnetic coils or permanent magnets based systems. This second solution is not the most used by researchers, because of the difficulties to control the magnetic force. In this paper we propose a magnetic actuator prototype based on permanent magnets. In addition to the magnets, the actuator is also composed of a mechanical structure. This structure is used for positioning the permanent magnets, which allows to control the magnetic force generated by the actuator. We demonstrated in simulation …

The Bag of Words Approach for the Classification of Head and Neck Cancers Using Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy

2015

Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) is a leading technique for the detection of head and neck cancers. It can capture information regarding tissue absorption and scattering. In this research work, we propose a novel method for the identification of normal and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) mucosa tissues using the Bag Of Words (BOW) approach. The study included 70 spectra from normal mucosa tissue sites and 70 spectra from SCC mucosa tissue sites. First, the spectra are preprocessed by extracting the useful wavelength range, denoising and reducing the inter and intra patient variability. Subsequently, features are extracted from each spectrum by continuously sliding a window with a predef…

Automatic Myocardial Infarction Evaluation from Delayed-Enhancement Cardiac MRI Using Deep Convolutional Networks

2021

In this paper, we propose a new deep learning framework for an automatic myocardial infarction evaluation from clinical information and delayed enhancement-MRI (DE-MRI). The proposed framework addresses two tasks. The first task is automatic detection of myocardial contours, the infarcted area, the no-reflow area, and the left ventricular cavity from a short-axis DE-MRI series. It employs two segmentation neural networks. The first network is used to segment the anatomical structures such as the myocardium and left ventricular cavity. The second network is used to segment the pathological areas such as myocardial infarction, myocardial no-reflow, and normal myocardial region. The segmented …

Open-Loop Drug Delivery Strategy to the Cochlea using a Permanent Magnetic Actuator

2018

International audience; The use of robotic devices for drug delivery in sensitive area of the human body is an innovative and reliable solution. Most of them use magnetics fields, to steer micro-nanorobots into diseases locations. In this study, we use a magnetic actuator based on two permanent magnets as an end-effector of a robotic manipulator. The actuator offers the possibility to generate both pushing and pulling forces on the magnetic actuator axis in an open-loop control way. We describe in this paper the robotic drug delivery strategy that we implemented in a 6 degree of freedom robotic manipulator to push and to steer a magnetic microparticle from the round window to the apex of th…

Effect of Corticosteroids on Facial Function after Cerebellopontine Angle Tumor Removal: A Double-Blind Study versus Placebo

2015

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of corticosteroids administered intra- and postoperatively on the occurrence of facial palsy after a cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor resection, and to investigate pre- and intraoperative prognostic factors. A multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind and versus-placebo study was conducted between 2006 and 2010. Three hundred and ten patients operated on for a CPA tumor (96% vestibular schwannomas, 4% miscellaneous) were included by five participating centers. The population was stratified into patients with small (≤15 mm CPA on axial MRI views) and large tumors. In each group, patients were randomized to receive corticosteroid (1 mg…

Augmented Reality of the Middle Ear Combining Otoendoscopy and Temporal Bone Computed Tomography

2018

International audience; HYPOTHESIS:Augmented reality (AR) may enhance otologic procedures by providing sub-millimetric accuracy and allowing the unification of information in a single screen.BACKGROUND:Several issues related to otologic procedures can be addressed through an AR system by providing sub-millimetric precision, supplying a global view of the middle ear cleft, and advantageously unifying the information in a single screen. The AR system is obtained by combining otoendoscopy with temporal bone computer tomography (CT).METHODS:Four human temporal bone specimens were explored by high-resolution CT-scan and dynamic otoendoscopy with video recordings. The initialization of the system…

Real-Time Augmented Reality for Ear Surgery

2018

International audience; Transtympanic procedures aim at accessing the middle ear structures through a puncture in the tympanic membrane. They require visualization of middle ear structures behind the eardrum. Up to now, this is provided by an oto endoscope. This work focused on implementing a real-time augmented reality based system for robotic-assisted transtympanic surgery. A preoperative computed tomography scan is combined with the surgical video of the tympanic membrane in order to visualize the ossciles and labyrinthine windows which are concealed behind the opaque tympanic membrane. The study was conducted on 5 artificial and 4 cadaveric temporal bones. Initially, a homography framew…

3D landmark detection for augmented reality based otologic procedures

2019

International audience; Ear consists of the smallest bones in the human body and does not contain significant amount of distinct landmark points that may be used to register a preoperative CT-scan with the surgical video in an augmented reality framework. Learning based algorithms may be used to help the surgeons to identify landmark points. This paper presents a convolutional neural network approach to landmark detection in preoperative ear CT images and then discusses an augmented reality system that can be used to visualize the cochlear axis on an otologic surgical video.

Use of Super Paramagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles as Drug Carriers in Brain and Ear: State of the Art and Challenges

2021

International audience; Drug delivery and distribution in the central nervous system (CNS) and the inner ear represent a challenge for the medical and scientific world, especially because of the blood–brain and the blood–perilymph barriers. Solutions are being studied to circumvent or to facilitate drug diffusion across these structures. Using superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), which can be coated to change their properties and ensure biocompatibility, represents a promising tool as a drug carrier. They can act as nanocarriers and can be driven with precision by magnetic forces. The aim of this study was to systematically review the use of SPIONs in the CNS and the inner e…
