Predicting shifting sustainability trade-offs in marine finfish aquaculture under climate change

Defining sustainability goals is a crucial but difficult task because it often involves the quantification of multiple interrelated and sometimes conflicting components. This complexity may be exacerbated by climate change, which will increase environmental vulnerability in aquaculture and potentially compromise the ability to meet the needs of a growing human population. In this study, we analyse Posidonia oceanica litter decomposition and invertebrate colonization in three sites with different hydrodynamics in a coastal basin. Litterbags were put on the sea bed along a gradient of distance from the open sea, implying a different level of water exchange. The same genetic stock of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo), cultured in different conditions (lot A, monoculture tank; lot B, monoculture offshore cage; lot C, polyculture tank), was analysed using geometric morphometrics in order to detect changes in shape. Rearing in the offshore cage (lot B) had a significant effect on shape variation when compared to rearing in the two enclosed tanks (A and C). Here, we studied fish assemblages associated with Cymodocea nodosa meadows exposed to high pCO2/low pH conditions at a natural CO2 vent in the Mediterranean Sea. Sampling was carried out seasonally in 1999 in two locations characterised by different depth and vegetal coverage. Karyotypes have been described in four Mediterranean species of the genus Diplodus (Teleostei, Sparidae), D. vulgaris, D. puntazzo, D. sargus and D. annularis. Chromosomes were mainly acrocentric in all but D. vulgaris, where certain chromosome pairs were subtelocentric. A remarkable intraspecific heteromorphism in the number of NOR-bearing chromosomes along with a substantial interspecific variability in position of chromosomal Ag signals have been encountered. A biochemical study of the effects of tributyltin on unfertilized eggs, embryos and larvae of the sea squirt Ciona intestinalis

We have used unfertilized eggs, embryos and larvae of the sea squirt Ciona intestinalis (Ascidiacea, Urochordata) to study the effects of tributyltin (TBT) on acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity. Our results showed an increase of AChE enzyme activity levels after TBT exposure in both unfertilized eggs and embryos. The effects of TBT were more pronounced during the gastrula stage, while no differences between exposed larvae and controls were observed. A mechanism of TBT action on enzyme activity during ascidian embryonic development and the possibility of employing AChE in C. intestinalis as a biomarker of TBT exposure are suggested and discussed.

Two hundred and ninety-nine specimens of Atherina boyeri, collected from five Mediterranean sites (three from the open sea (Chioggia, Catania and Gaeta) and two from river mouths (the Birgi and S. Bartolomeo rivers) were analyzed in order to confirm previous genetic studies. Eigtheen loci were scored from 12 enzymatic systems, 3 of which were polymorphic: EST*, PGM* and PGI*. Biochemical genetic differentiation between Pomatoschistus marmoratus and P. tortonesei

Several diagnostic genetic markers were identified in Pomatoschistus marmoratus and P. tortonesei using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of allozymes. Twenty-one loci were resolved, including the electrophoretic pattern of muscle proteins. The MDH*, PGM1,2*, EST-1,2*, FUM* and PGI-2* loci exhibited different alleles which were fixed for the two species being analysed. Genetic distance, as calculated by Nei's index, showed a value of 0.413. Environmental hypersalinity, could have influenced the geographical distribution of P. tortonesei.

The data obtained showed a different distribution of the enzymatic activities in the different parts of the alimentary tract. Levels of enzymatic activity in the adults were higher than those measured in juveniles, suggesting that adults have a greater ability to digest larger pieces of food. Small-sized specimens (test diameter: 16.64 ± 0.93 mm, mean ± SE) of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus were fed with fresh discards of the lettuce Lactuca sativa during a 24-week experiment in a sea-based system. In order to study the possibility of exploiting protected marine areas, comparative data on the cultivation of the oyster Cassostrea gigas in the South Tyrrenian Sea are reported. The oysters were cultured at -7 and - 13 m on long lines linked to artificial reefs. During a 18‐week experiment in a sea‐based system, Paracentrotus lividus was fed with two formulations of a new sustainable feed whose main ingredients were food farming discards, mostly outermost lettuce leaves, in different percentage. Notes on the Biology and Ecology of Opeatogenys gracilis (Canestrini 1864) (Pisces: Gobiesocidae) from Coastal Environments in Sicily (Mediterranean)

A particularly large number of specimens of the Mediterranean coastal fish Opeatogenys gracilis (Canestrini 1864) (Pisces: Gobiesocidae) were collected from Posidonia oceanica mats of the “Stagnone di Marsala” sound (western Sicily) and in the Gulf of Carini (northern Sicily). A study was made of biometric and meristic characters and, for the first time for this species, diet composition. The biometric and meristic data did not distinguish between specimens from the two study sites. In accordance with its benthic habit, O. gracilis feeds on small phytal prey living on Posidonia oceanica leaves. The preferential food items throughout the year were Copepoda Harpacticoida.

Anomalies in Sepiolinae hectocotylization

Four cases of anomalies of the copulatory arm in Sepiolinae (Cephalopoda: Sepiolidae) are reported. In one case (Sepietta oweniana), both dorsal arms were modified resulting in double hecocotylization. In another specimen probably of the same species the copula-tory apparatus was formed by two fleshy multilobed formations situated on the dorsal and ventral side of the arm base. In one specimen of Rondeletiola minor the copulatory apparatus was inversely positioned on the arm base, and in one Sepioh intermedia specimen the inner free portion of the wrinkled tubercle was markedly enlarged.

An assessment of trace element and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination based on surface sediments collected in summer 2012 was carried out in Priolo Bay adjoining one of the most polluted areas of the Mediterranean Sea, the industrial Augusta harbour (Italy, Central Mediterranean). The data were compared with those reported in the literature for other sturgeons reared for human consumption. This hybrid would seem to be of great nutritional interest, its flesh being more beneficial for human health than those of other cultured sturgeons. To move towards a higher sustainability of echinoculture, this study proposes a sustainable feed for Paracentrotus lividus. A stable isotope study was carried out seasonally in three coastal ponds (Marinello system, Italy) affected by different gull guano input to investigate the effect of nutrient subsidies on food web structure and dynamics. A marked 15N enrichment occurred in the pond receiving the highest guano input, indicating that gull-derived fertilization (guanotrophication) had a strong localised effect and flowed across trophic levels. The study was carried out in western Sicily, where B. pharaonis is present on both the submerged and emerged surfaces of a hyperhaline saltpan. Preliminary studies on reproduction of Puntazzo puntazzo (Gmelin 1789) (Pisces, Sparidae) under controlled conditions

Abstract Experiments were carried out under controlled conditions in September 1983 on the reproduction of Puntazzo puntazzo (sheepshead bream). The techniques adopted to stimulate spawning, the egg characteristics, and the phases of embryonal development until the sixth day after hatching are described. The best spawning results were obtained with intramuscular injections of HCG at 1 I.U./g of body weight. Optimal fertilization and hatching were observed at 22°C, the mean temperature of the sea water during the natural period of reproduction of Puntazzo puntazzo .

Abstract Shellfish aquaculture represents a worldwide valuable segment of the aquaculture market, spreading along the Mediterranean coasts, and is sensitive to the still unforeseen, poorly-known effects of climate change. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (13C/12C and 15N/14N) of primary producers and consumers were investigated seasonally throughout 1999, in order to describe the food web in a western Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Lake of Sabaudia, central Italy). Particulate organic matter and algal material (seagrass epiphytes and macroalgae) seem to constitute the main food sources for primary consumers (zooplankton and small benthic invertebrates, respectively) throughout the sampling year, while the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa appears to play a negligible trophic role.
