Remote entanglement distribution in a quantum network via multinode indistinguishability of photons

2022

Quantum networking relies on entanglement distribution between distant nodes, typically realized by swapping procedures. However, entanglement swapping is a demanding task in practice, mainly because of limited effectiveness of entangled photon sources and Bell-state measurements necessary to realize the process. Here we experimentally activate a remote distribution of two-photon polarization entanglement superseding the need for initial entangled pairs and traditional Bell-state measurements. This alternative procedure is accomplished thanks to the controlled spatial indistinguishability of four independent photons in three separated nodes of the network, which enables us to perform locali…

Proof-of-Principle Direct Measurement of Particle Statistical Phase

2022

The symmetrization postulate in quantum mechanics is formally reflected in the appearance of an exchange phase governing the symmetry of identical-particle global states under particle swapping. Many indirect measurements of this fundamental phase have been reported thus far, but a direct observation has been achieved only recently for photons. Here, we propose a general scheme capable of directly measuring the exchange phase of any type of particle (bosons, fermions, or anyons), exploiting the operational framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication. We experimentally implement it on an all-optical platform, providing a proof of principle for different simulated …

Microstructural, mechanical and tribological properties of suspension plasma sprayed YSZ/h-BN composite coating

2018

Abstract Brittleness, relative high friction coefficient and wear rate limit the applications of ceramic coatings as wear-resistant layers. However, because embedding additives with ceramic matrix has demonstrated to be an effective way to improve coating performances, different contents and size of h-BN were added into an YSZ suspension. Afterwards, the YSZ/h-BN composite coatings were manufactured by suspension plasma spray and their tribological analysis indicated that: i) the reduction of the friction coefficient and wear rate can be achieved by incorporating h-BN into YSZ coating. ii) finer h-BN particle is more helpful to enhance the tribological properties of the coating. iii) the op…

Evaluation of nano/submicro pores in suspension plasma sprayed YSZ coatings

2019

Abstract Nano-submicro pores could considerably influence the coating performances and thus should be properly designed for the intended applications. However, it is challenging to characterize accurately such small pores in coatings. In this study, YSZ coatings were firstly manufactured by suspension plasma spray (SPS) and the nano-submicro pores in as-prepared coatings were investigated using Ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). Afterwards, a multivariate analysis on the effect of five different process parameters was carried out. The two main results showed that: 1) the nano-submicro pores content in coatings has a negative correlation with suspension mass load and powder size, an…

Experimental quantum entanglement and teleportation by tuning remote spatial indistinguishability of independent photons.

2020

Quantitative control of spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems as a direct quantum resource at distant sites has not yet been experimentally proven. We design a setup capable of tuning remote spatial indistinguishability of two independent photons by individually adjusting their spatial distribution in two distant regions, leading to polarization entanglement from uncorrelated photons. This is achieved by spatially localized operations and classical communication on photons that meet only at the detectors. The amount of entanglement depends uniquely on the degree of spatial indistinguishability, quantified by an entropic measure I , which enables teleportation with fidelities …

Ab initio calculations of the hydroxyl impurities in BaF2

2011

Abstract OH − impurities in BaF 2 crystal have been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) with hybrid exchange potentials, namely DFT-B3PW. Three different configurations of OH − impurities were investigated and the (1 1 1)-oriented OH − configuration is the most stable one. Our calculations show that OH − as an atomic group has a steady geometrical structure instead of electronic properties in different materials. The studies on band structures and density of states (DOS) of the OH − -impurity systems indicate that there are two defect levels induced by OH − impurities. The two superposed occupied OH − -bands located 1.95 eV above the valance bands (VB) at Γ point mainly consist…

Towards Experiencing Eating as a Form of Play

2018

There is an increasing trend in interaction design to engage with food. We note that most prior work targets instrumental benefits (for example see food tracking apps to manage nutritional intake). In contrast, in this article, we highlight the potential of technology to support eating as a form of play. We reflect on our own work to articulate two design strategies for game designers on how they can facilitate playful eating experiences using novel technologies. Ultimately, with our work, we aim to facilitate a more playful engagement around the way we eat.

Towards a Coming Together of Transhumanism and Play

2018

We note a trend on utilizing interactive technology to extend human capacities through bodily cyborg-like integrations such as artificial limbs and implantables. This trend is often captured by the term "transhumanism", referring to the use of technology to extend human capacities. We find that many transhuman discussions appear to focus on instrumental benefits (i.e. exploiting opportunities to be more productive). We extend this by proposing engagement with transhumanism also from a perspective of "play". We reflect on our own and other's work to articulate three strategies for game designers on how they can engage with transhumanism when aiming to facilitate playful experiences. Ultimate…

Activation of indistinguishability-based quantum coherence for enhanced metrological applications with particle statistics imprint

2022

Quantum coherence, an essential feature of quantum mechanics allowing quantum superposition of states, is a resource for quantum information processing. Coherence emerges in a fundamentally different way for nonidentical and identical particles. For the latter, a unique contribution exists linked to indistinguishability that cannot occur for nonidentical particles. Here, we experimentally demonstrate this additional contribution to quantum coherence with an optical setup, showing that its amount directly depends on the degree of indistinguishability, and exploiting it in a quantum phase discrimination protocol. Furthermore, the designed setup allows for simulating fermionic particles with p…

Nudge for justice : An ERP investigation of default effects on trade-offs between equity and efficiency

2020

Default options are an increasingly common tool used by organizations, managers, and policymakers to guide individuals’ behavior. We wondered whether the known preference for default options could constitute a nudge to achieve more equitable or more efficient results. Combining with event-related potentials, we found that both the default option and distributive justice contributed significantly to decision-making. The N200s and P300s were extracted using the tensor decomposition, which showed superiority in terms of capturing multi-domain features. The results demonstrated that greater brain activity associated with conflict monitoring was elicited in the trade-off between equity and effic…

Thermal sprayed coatings for protection against cavitation erosion

2018

In order to protect the hydraulic components from cavitation erosion phenomena, the parts are often coated by thermal spraying. Buck YSZ shows an excellent performance against cavitation erosion. However, the cavitation erosion resistance of YSZ coatings have vaguely been studied. Therefore, in this study, YSZ were manufactured with different thermal spraying processes and post-treated by laser remelting, then they were subjected to cavitation tests according to ASTM G32.The YSZ coating was first manufactured by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Various sizes of YSZ powder and different preheating temperatures of the substrate were studied to observe their effect on the cavitation behavior…
