Processing and properties of nanocrystalline Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O3, Pb(Sc0.5Nb0.5)O3, Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3and Pb0.76Ca0.24TiO3films and ferroelectric/ relaxor superlattices

Abstract Thin films of relaxor materials, namely Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O3 (PST), Pb(Sc0.5Nb0.5)O3 (PSN) and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN), and of Pb0.76Ca0.24TiO3 (PTC), which is a classical ferroelectric as bulk material, have been produced to examine whether nanocrystalline relaxor materials show influences in their properties if their grain size is reduced to dimensions known from their nanodomains and to investigate effects in a superlattice of nanocrystalline ferroelectric and relaxor films. At first amorphous films of the different materials were deposited onto a Ti/Pt coated Silicon (100) wafer by reactive rf-sputtering. Different grain sizes could be prepared by a controlled annealing process. The…

The COMPASS experiment at CERN

The COMPASS experiment makes use of the CERN SPS high-intensitymuon and hadron beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure and the spectroscopy of hadrons. One or more outgoing particles are detected in coincidence with the incoming muon or hadron. A large polarized target inside a superconducting solenoid is used for the measurements with the muon beam. Outgoing particles are detected by a two-stage, large angle and large momentum range spectrometer. The setup is built using several types of tracking detectors, according to the expected incident rate, required space resolution and the solid angle to be covered. Particle identification is achieved using a RICH counter and both…

Grain-size-induced relaxor properties in nanocrystalline perovskite films

Thin films of ${\mathrm{Pb}}_{0.76}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.24}{\mathrm{TiO}}_{3}$ (PTC), which is a classical ferroelectric as a bulk material and of the relaxor material $\mathrm{Pb}({\mathrm{Sc}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{0.5}){\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, have been produced to find out whether nanocrystalline ferroelectric films show a grain-size-induced relaxor behavior. Amorphous films were deposited onto a $\mathrm{Ti}∕\mathrm{Pt}$ coated silicon (100) wafer by reactive $\text{rf}$ sputtering. Different grain sizes were prepared by a controlled annealing process and they were determined by profile analysis of x-ray diffraction spectra. Temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy was used to look for phase trans…

Evolution of dielectric properties in transparent PLZT 8.3/70/30 ceramics at the diffused phase transition

Abstract The time evolution of dielectric properties after a temporary change of temperature and electric field is investigated. It is found, that below the temperature of ˛' maximum Tm the change of temperature and electric field creates an increase of dielectric permittivity followed by logarithmic decay when the change of these parameters is finished. At every temperature the dielectric properties are characterized by a unique ˛'(t) independent on previous thermal history. If the applied electric field is E< Ec, the state of polarization is not affected. The dependence on dielectric constant of storage time under field as well as field intensity is determined.

Measurement of the Spin Structure of the Deuteron in the DIS Region

We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron in the range 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2 and 0.004< x <0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised 6-LiD target. The results are in agreement with those from previous experiments and improve considerably the statistical accuracy in the region 0.004 < x < 0.03.

Measurement of W ± Z production in proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A study of W±Z production in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. In total, 317 candidates, with a background expectation of 68±10 events, are observed in double-leptonic decay final states with electrons, muons and missing transverse momentum. The total cross-section is determined to be σtotWZ=19.0+1.4−1.3(stat.)±0.9(syst.)±0.4(lumi.) pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 17.6+1.1−1.0 pb. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are derived using the transverse momentum spectrum of Z bosons in the selected events. The …

Bose-Einstein correlations in W-pair decays

Bose-Einstein correlations are studied in semileptonic (WW --> q (q) over bar lv) and fully hadronic (WW --> q (q) over bar q (q) over bar) W-pair decays with the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies of 172, 183 and 189 GeV. They are compared with those made at the Z peak after correction for the different flavour compositions. A Monte Carlo model of Bose-Einstein correlations based on the JETSET hadronization scheme was tuned to the Z data and reproduces the correlations in the WW --> q (q) over bar lv events. The same Monte Carlo reproduces the correlations in the WW --> q (q) over bar q (q) over bar channel assuming independent fragmentation of the two W's. A variant of this …

Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs

Abstract We present a determination of the gluon polarization Δ G / G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 , with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6 LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is 〈 A ∥ / D 〉 = 0.002 ± 0.019 ( stat ) ± 0.003 ( syst ) . From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Δ G / G = 0.024 ± 0.089 ( stat ) ± 0.057 ( syst ) at x g = 0.095 and μ 2 ≃ 3 ( GeV / c ) 2 .

Processing and properties of nanocrystalline Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O3, Pb(Sc0.5nb0.5)O3 and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 films produced by RF-sputtering from ceramic targets

Abstract Nanocrystalline thin films of different relaxor materials, namely Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O3 (PST), Pb(Sc0.5Nb0.5)O3(PSN), Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3(PMN) have been produced by RF-sputtering to investigate whether it will affect their dielectric properties if their grain size is reduced to the dimensions known from their nanodomains. The XRD shows that the amorphous film crystallizes in pyrochlore structure at lower temperatures and short times. Annealing at higher temperatures and far longer time intervals leads to an increasing amount of perovskite phase with a grain size in the nanometer range. These results including dielectric measurements will be presented and discussed.
