Rugged Large Volume Injection for Sensitive Capillary LC-MS Environmental Monitoring
A rugged and high throughput capillary column (cLC) LC-MS switching platform using large volume injection and on-line automatic filtration and filter back-flush (AFFL) solid phase extraction (SPE) for analysis of environmental water samples with minimal sample preparation is presented. Although narrow columns and on-line sample preparation are used in the platform, high ruggedness is achieved e.g. injection of 100 non-filtrated water samples would did not result in a pressure rise/clogging of the SPE/capillary columns (inner diameter 300 µm). In addition, satisfactory retention time stability and chromatographic resolution were also features of the system. The potential of the platform for …
Hemiesters and hemiamides of maleic and succinic acid: synthesis and application of surfactants in emulsion polymerization with styrene and butyl acrylate
Hemiesters and hemiamides of maleic acid with different chain lengths of the hydrophobic alkyl group (R = C8H17, C10H21, C12H25, C16H33) have been synthesized and used as surfactants in the emulsion polymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate. The same polymerization experiments were also carried out using nonreactive surfactants with an analogous succinic structure. The chemical structure of the surfactants was confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The melting point and critical micelle concentration of the reactive surfactants described herein were measured. All of the surfactants studied provided good stability of styrene/butyl acrylate latexes, when compared with a reference late…
Methacrylic maleic bifunctional stabilizer in emulsion polymerization
Films from styrene–butyl acrylate lattices using maleic or succinic surfactants: mechanical properties, water rebound and grafting of the surfactants
Abstract A series of anionic and zwitterionic maleic surfactants have been synthesized and engaged in styrene–butyl acrylate emulsion polymerization. Some non-reactive succinic analogs have been synthesized in order to perform their comparison with the maleic surfactants in polymerization experiments. Films from the obtained lattices were cast, and their mechanical properties and the water rebound were tested. The results of water rebound demonstrate significant difference between the films prepared with maleic or succinic surfactants. Water rebound of the films after 34 days in the case of succinic surfactants was found to be between 51 and 95%, while for maleic surfactants it is only 25–4…
Evanescent wave-initiated photopolymerisation as a new way to create monolithic open-tubular capillary columns: use as enzymatic microreactor for on-line protein digestion
Evanescent wave-initiated photopolymerisation in an optically wave guiding PTFE-coated fused silica capillary using light-emitting diode as a light source, is established here as a way to fabricate monolithic porous layer open-tubular capillary columns with a potential in capillary separation methods; application of the obtained open-tubular columns as enzymatic microreactors for on-line protein digestion is demonstrated.
Cationic and Zwitterionic Polymerizable SurfactantsQuaternary Ammonium Dialkyl Maleates. 2. Emulsion Polymerization of Styrene and Butyl Acrylate
Polymerizable cationic and zwitterionic dialkyl maleates with different hydrophobic chain lengths (R = C10H21, C12H25, C16H33, C18H37) and different counterions (I, Br, HSO4) for the cationic hydrophilic part, as well as some similar surfactants, dialkyl succinates, were used in batch and seeded emulsion polymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate. All surfactants, when used in emulsion polymerization, provide good stability to the styrene/butyl acrylate latices. A styrene/butyl acrylate latex prepared with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a reference. Some stability tests for latices were performed, and the glass transition temperatures, as well as the molecular weights of the pol…

Cationic and Zwitterionic Polymerizable Surfactants: Quaternary Ammonium Dialkyl Maleates. 1. Synthesis and Characterization
Cationic and zwitterionic reactive dialkyl maleates with different hydrophobic chain lengths (R = C10H21, C12H25, C16H33, and C18H37), and some similar surfactants without double bonds were synthesized with an aim to use them as stabilizers in the batch and seeded emulsion copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate (part 2 of this series). Surfactants are obtained in a three-step synthesis, starting from ring opening of maleic anhydride, followed by O alkylation with an aminoalkyl compound, and finishing with quaternization of the amino group in the hydrophilic part of the molecule. The chemical structure of surfactants was confirmed by 1H NMR. Melting points and critical micelle concen…
