Structure features and phase behaviour of amphiphilic N-tetradecyl-β-hydroxy-propionic acid amide monolayers
Abstract Two phase transitions of N-tetradecyl-β-hydroxy-propionic acid amide monolayers at the air/water interface were studied by means of pressure/surface area ( π A ) isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) and synchrotron X-ray grazing-incidence diffraction (GID). At T≤15 °C the π A isotherms show two plateau regions indicating two first-order phase transitions. In the first main transition from the lowdensity fluid-like phase to a condensed phase, dendritic growth of condensed phase domains with six main growth directions was observed by BAM. Search for Stopped Gluinos frompp¯Collisions ats=1.96 TeV
Long-lived, heavy particles are predicted in a number of models beyond the standard model of particle physics. We present the first direct search for such particles' decays, occurring up to 100 h after their production and not synchronized with an accelerator bunch crossing. We apply the analysis to the gluino (g), predicted in split supersymmetry, which after hadronization can become charged and lose enough momentum through ionization to come to rest in dense particle detectors. Measurement of theΛbLifetime in the Exclusive DecayΛb→J/ψΛ
We have measured the {lambda}{sub b} lifetime using the exclusive decay {lambda}{sub b}{yields}J/{psi}{lambda}, based on 1.2 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002-2006. From 171 reconstructed {lambda}{sub b} decays, where the J/{psi} and {lambda} are identified via the decays J/{psi}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and {lambda}{yields}p{pi}, we measured the {lambda}{sub b} lifetime to be {tau}({lambda}{sub b})=1.218{sub -0.115}{sup +0.130}(stat){+-}0.042(syst) ps. Measurement of the differential cross section for the production of an isolated photon with associated jet in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
The process ppbar -> photon + jet + X is studied using 1.0 fb^-1 of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. Photons are reconstructed in the central rapidity region |y_gamma|<1.0 with transverse momenta in the range 3015 GeV. The differential cross section d^3sigma/dPt_gamma dy_gamma dy_jet is measured as a function of Pt_gamma in four regions, differing by the relative orientations of the photon and the jet in rapidity. Search for scalar top quarks in the acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy final state in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks, $\tilde{t}$, using 995 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected in $p\bar{p}$ collisions with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a charm quark and a neutralino ($\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$), where $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$ is the lightest supersymmetric particle. This leads to a final state with two acoplanar charm jets and missing transverse energy. We find the yield of such events to be consistent with the standard model expectation, and exclude sets of $\tilde{t}$ and $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1} $ masses at the 95% C.L. that substantially extend the domain excl…
Accumulation of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) in the liver of patients with renal failure and portal hypertension
Summary Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) has gained wide clinical acceptance as a colloidal plasma substitute. We were able to study the liver biopsies of two patients with renal failure who developed ascites after repeated infusions of HES. All types of liver cells displayed massive accumulation of HES with the morphologic resemblance to a storage disease. These changes could be distinguished clearly from the lesions of a hereditary disorder by light and electron microscopy. Although it is difficult to establish a causative role for HES in the development of ascites on the bases of morphological changes alone, one should be cautious about giving HES to patients with renal failure until exact data…
Measurement of the Semileptonic Branching Ratio ofBs0to an Orbitally ExcitedDs**State:Br(Bs0→Ds1−(2536)μ+νX)
In a data sample of approximately 1.3 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006, the orbitally excited charm state D_s1(2536) has been observed with a measured mass of 2535.7 +/- 0.6 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst) MeV via the decay mode B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X. A first measurement is made of the branching ratio product Br(b(bar) -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X).Br(D_s1(2536)->D* K0_S). Assuming that D_s1(2536) production in semileptonic decay is entirely from B0_s, an extraction of the semileptonic branching ratio Br(B0_s -> D_s1(2536) mu nu X) is made.
Search for the lightest scalar top quark in events with two leptons in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
Abstract We report results of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, t ˜ 1 , using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb −1 collected by the DO detector at a p p ¯ center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Both scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a b quark, a charged lepton and a scalar neutrino. The search is performed in the electron plus muon and dielectron final states. The signal topology consists of two isolated leptons, missing transverse energy, and jets. Ischemia and post-ischemic regeneration of the small intestinal mucosa
After reversible ligation of the arcade vessels of the proximal jejunum, the intestinal mucosa was investigated by light microscopic and autoradiographic methods after 15, 30, 60, 120 and 300 min of ischemia. Early ischemic damage to the mucosa (after about 15 min) is characterized by shedding of not yet irreversibly damaged enterocytes from the tips of the villi into the intestinal lumen and bleb formation starting at the base of the epithelia. This process advances from the tips to the bases of the villi with increasing duration of ischemia, and the villi are completely denuded of epithelium after ischemia lasting 2 h. Die Struktur des cervicalen Dr�senfeldes im menschlichen Uterus (eine rasterelektronenmikroskopische Studie)
Rasterelektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen am normalen cervicalen Drusenfeld des Uterus von 5 Frauen im Alter zwischen 34–42 Jahren ergeben neben den bekannten plicae palmatae eine Dreiteilung des Oberflachenreliefs im Cervixkanal: Die Drusenzellen sind entweder in einem sekretorischen Ruhezustand oder in der Phase der Sekretbildung bzw. -ausschleusung. Ein morphologisch fasbarer cervicaler Cyclus besteht nicht. Dagegen nimmt die sekretorische Aktivitat von der Portio zum Isthmus hin in Ubereinstimmung mit fruheren eigenen Untersuchungen ab.
Search for pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks
We report on a search for the pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks (LQ) in ppbar collisions at the center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Topologies arising from the LQLQbar->muqnuq and LQLQbar->muqmuq decay modes are investigated. No excess of data over the standard model prediction is observed and upper limits on the leptoquark pair production cross section are derived at the 95% C.L. as a function of the leptoquark mass and the branching fraction beta for the decay LQ->muq. Search for a Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson
We describe a search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass of 105 GeV/c(2) to 145 GeV/c(2) in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 450 pb(-1) collected with the D phi detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The Higgs boson is required to be produced in association with a Z boson, and the Z boson is required to decay to either electrons or muons with the Higgs boson decaying to a b (b) over bar pair. The data are well described by the expected background, leading to 95% confidence level cross section upper limits sigma (p (p) over bar -> ZH) x B(H -> b (b) over bar) in the range of 3.1 pb to 4.4 pb.
Autoantibodies to the islet antigen ICA69 occur in IDDM and in rheumatoid arthritis.
Islet cell antigen (ICA) 69 is a newly-recognized islet cell antigen to which autoantibodies have been observed in prediabetic relatives of patients with insulin-dependent-diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Here we extend the earlier analysis of ICA69 antibodies to patients with recent-onset IDDM and to patients with other immune-mediated diseases. ICA69 antibodies were determined by Western blot using an affinity purified recombinant fusion protein of ICA69 and maltose binding protein. ICA69 antibody quantities were determined as titres using a titration curve of a standard serum as reference. Mean logarithmic ICA69 antibody titres were 3.4 (+/- 1.4) in 99 patients with acute IDDM compared to 2.8 (…
Does uremic enterocolitis exist?
In rats a severe but compensated chronic renal insufficiency was induced by stepwise 9/10 nephrectomy. Despite this severe chronic renal insufficiency we observed no relevant pathological changes in the intestinal mucosa. In particular, we found no evidence of mucosal erosions, ulceration or pseudomembranous colitis, findings which are traditionally thought to be characteristic of the uremic state. This was also true of those animals dying prematurely from uremia. Thus serious doubts arise about the existence of “uremic enterocolitis”, doubts which also proved justified after a critical review of the literature on human pathology.
Zγ production and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
We present a study of eey and mu mu gamma events using 1109 (1009) pb-(1) of data in the electron (muon) channel, respectively. These data were collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider at Is = 1.96 TeV. Having observed 453 (515) candidates in the eey (jtAy) final state, we measure the Z gamma production cross section for a photon with transverse energy ET > 7 GeV, separation between the photon and leptons Delta Rey > 0.7, and invariant mass of the di-lepton pair Mee > 30 GeV/(2)(c), to be 4.96 0.30(stat. + syst.) zE 0.30(lumi.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 4.74 0.22 pb. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the renal capsule
We report about an extremely rare case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the renal capsule. The tumor is composed of fibroblast-like cells arranged in a storiform pattern and histiocyte-like cells with multinucleated giant cells, both showing no iron reaction. Characteristic of the histiocytic quality of the tumor are numerous PAS-positive intracytoplasmic droplets which can be identified as erythrophagosomes only under the electron microscope. Emphasis is put on the preoperative differential diagnosis of the tumor from renal cell carcinoma as well as on its histogenesis and prognosis.
Search for flavor-changing-neutral-current D meson decays
We study the flavor-changing-neutral-current process c to u mu+ mu- using 1.3 fb^-1 of p p bar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We see clear indications of the Ds+ and D+ to phi pi+ to mu+ mu- pi+ final states with significance greater than four standard deviations above background for the D+ state. We search for the continuum decay of D+ to pi+mu+mu- in the dimuon invariant mass spectrum away from the phi resonance. We see no evidence of signal above background and set a limit of B(D+ to pi+mu+mu-) < 3.9 x 10^-6 at the 90% C.L. Ischemia and post-ischemic regeneration of the small intestinal mucosa
After ligation of the vascular arcades of the upper jejunum in rats, the ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa and its regenerative behavior after ischemia lasting 120 minutes were investigated with histological and enzyme-histochemical methods. During the ischemic injury of the jejunal mucosa, there is rejection of hydropically swollen epithelial cells into the intestinal lumen advancing from the tip to the base of the villi without a previously detectable loss of activity of the enzymes investigated. Measurement of the ratio of the pp¯→W+c-jet cross section to the inclusive pp¯→W+jets cross section
We present a measurement of the fraction of inclusive W +jets events produced with net charm quantum number 11, denoted W + c-jet, in p collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using approximately 1 fb(-1) of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We identify the W +jets events via the leptonic W boson decays. Candidate W + c-jet events are selected by requiring a jet containing a muon in association with a reconstructed W boson and exploiting the charge correlation between this muon and W boson decay lepton to perform a nearly model-independent background subtraction. Brewster angle microscopy and X-ray GID studies of morphology and crystal structure in monolayers of N-tetradecyl-γ,δ-dihydroxypentanoic acid amide
First-order phase transitions from the low-density fluidlike phase to the condensed phase of monolayers of N-tetradecyl-γ,δ-dihydroxypentanoic acid amides at the air−water interface have been studied by π−A isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and synchrotron X-ray grazing incidence diffraction (GID). The thermodynamic differences between enantiomeric and racemic monolayers are too small to be measured. However, chiral discrimination is observable in the macroscopic domain morphology by BAM. Search for supersymmetry in di-photon final states at s=1.96 TeV
We report results of a search for supersymmetry (SUSY) with gauge-mediated symmetry breaking in di-photon events collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in 2002-2006. In 1.1 fb(-1) of data, we find no significant excess beyond the background expected from the standard model and set the most stringent lower limits to date for a standard benchmark model on the lightest neutralino and chargino masses of 125 GeV and 229 GeV, respectively, at 95% confidence.
Experimental study on the free transplantation of mucosa and lyophilised dura to the oral cavity
Summary The covering of epithelial defects in the oral cavity presents special problems in preprosthetic surgery, since special requisites for function and quality of mucosal grafts must be satisfied. In animal experiments mucosal defects in the oral cavity of 30 rabbits were repaired with free transplants of autologous mucosa and heterologous lyophilised dura. A comparative clinical and histological assessment of the healing processes showed that there was no essential difference between both methods. The mechanism of epithelial shedding after ischemic damage to the small intestinal mucosa
The intestinal mucosa of the rat was examined by light and electron microscopy 15, 30, 60 and 120 min after complete ligation of the vessel arcades of the proximal jejunum. The characteristic sign of ischemic damage to the small intestinal mucosa and the reason for epithelial shedding is the appearance of membrane enclosed cytoplasmic blebs which arise at the cell base of the enterocytes and detach the epithelium from the basement membrane. This process begins at the tip of the villi before the enterocytes display signs of irreversible damage and progress to the base of the villi with continuation of the ischemia.
Morphology and chronology of ischemic mucosal changes in the small intestine
The morphology and chronology of an absolute ischemia was investigated on the small intestine of man and rat. It could be shown that the morphogenesis of ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa in man does not differ from that in the rat. However, there are crucial and in therapeutic terms significant differences in the time course of the ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa. Whereas in the small intestine of the rat, the first appreciable alterations - detachment and disruption of the lining epithelium at the villous tip - are already to be observed after absolute ischemia lasting 15 min, in the human small intestine the same lesions only occur after 4 h. A combined search for the standard model Higgs boson at s=1.96 TeV
AbstractWe present new results of the search for WH→ℓνbb¯ production in pp¯ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=1.96 TeV, based on a dataset with integrated luminosity of 0.44 fb−1. We combine these new results with previously published searches by the D0 collaboration, for WH and ZH production analyzed in the E̸Tbb¯ final state, for ZH (→ℓ+ℓ−bb¯) production, for WH (→WWW) production, and for H (→WW) direct production. No signal-like excess is observed either in the WH analysis or in the combination of all D0 Higgs boson analyses. We set 95% C.L. The relation between tumor cell proliferation and vascularization in differentiated and undifferentiated colon carcinomas in the rat.
Tumor cell proliferation and tumor vascularization were investigated in differentiated and undifferentiated colon carcinomas of the rat. Search for tt¯ resonances in the lepton plus jets final state in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96TeV
We present a search for a narrow-width heavy resonance decaying into top quark pairs X->ttbar in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96TeV using approximately 0.9fb^-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. This analysis considers ttbar candidate events in the lepton plus jets channel with at least one identified b jet and uses the ttbar invariant mass distribution to search for evidence of resonant production. We find no evidence for a narrow resonance X decaying to ttbar. Therefore, we set upper limits on sigma*B(X->ttbar) for different hypothesized resonance masses using a Bayesian approach. Advances in contrast variation for macromolecular structure determination by polarized neutron scattering and anomalous dispersion of synchrotron X-rays
Contrast variation for macromolecular structure determination is usually achieved by isomorphous replacement of 1-H by 2-H (D) using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). This is particularly easy in aqueous solvents. By adding heavy water the contrast of dissolved proteins, nucleic acids and membranes changes drastically. It is the region inaccesible to solvent molecules, which acts as a label. Measurements of the scattering intensity at three different scattering densities of a solvent yields the three basic scattering functions. Search for a scalar or vector particle decaying into Zγ in pp¯ collisions at s=1.96 TeV
We present a search for a narrow scalar or vector resonance decaying into Z gamma with a subsequent Z boson decay into a pair of electrons or moons. The data for this search were collected with the D circle divide detecror at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider at a center of mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. Using 1.1 (1.0) fb(-1) of data, we observe 49 (50) candidate events in the electron (muon) channel, in good agreement with the standard model prediction. From the combination of both channels, we derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction (sigma x B) into Z gamma. The second phase of the Fifth International Ice Nucleation Workshop (FIN-02) involved the gathering of a large number of researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology's Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics of the Atmosphere (AIDA) facility to promote characterization and understanding of ice nucleation measurements made by a variety of methods used worldwide. We have analyzed the expression of cytokeratin polypeptides in subcolumnar reserve cells of the human uterine endocervical mucosa and the other epithelial cells using immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence microscopy as well as by applying two-dimensional gel electrophoresis to microdissected cytoskeletal preparations. Endocervical columnar cells were uniformly positive for antibodies directed against the simple epithelium-type cytokeratins nos. 7, 8, 18, and 19, while a variable proportion of these cells was stained by an antibody against cytokeratin no. 4. The mass of B-1 is measured to be 5720.6 +/- 2.4 +/- 1.4 MeV/c(2) and the mass difference Delta M between B-2* and B-1 is 26.2 +/- 3.1 +/- 0: 9 MeV/c(2), giving the mass of the B-2* as 5746.8 +/- 2.4 +/- 1.7 MeV/c(2). The production rate for B-1 and B-2* mesons is determined to be a fraction (13.9 +/- 1.9 +/- 3.2)% of the production rate of the B+ meson.

Tumor dedifferentiation: an important step in tumor invasion.
Tumor invasion in vivo was studied by light and electron microscopy as well as by immunofluorescence microscopy. Special regard was paid to the grade of tumor differentiation. Dimethylhydrazine-induced murine colonic carcinomas comprising a differentiated and an undifferentiated tumor type with low and high invasiveness respectively, were used. At the invasion front of both tumor types a striking dissociation of the organized tumor cell complexes into isolated tumor cells was found together with a loss of most of the cytological features of differentiation.
