¿Movilidad inclusiva o accesibilidad inclusiva?

2017

Coping with the costs of car dependency : A system of expedients used by low-income households on the outskirts of Dijon and Paris

2018

International audience; Living on low incomes and in a car-dependent area is often interpreted as a double burden for households, even if the two characteristics are often interdependent. While their capacity for mobility is lower, low-income households in outer suburban areas are nonetheless mobile. Their capacities in this domain should not be underestimated or overlooked. They can command a set of alternative practices or expedients to deal with car-related economic stress by a set of resources derived essentially from spatial proximity. This article aims to present and analyse the diversity of these expedients for the case of outer suburban areas around Paris and Dijon. The analysis of …

Flexible work arrangements and household-related journeys. Who takes the lead in dual-earner heterosexual couples?

2022

International audience; This research provides an exploration of the relationship between flexible work arrangements (FWA), CO2 emissions, and household travel allocation among dual-earner couples. Using data from the United Kingdom National Travel Survey for the period between 2002 and 2017, we develop a path analysis approach based on SEM that allows for a comprehensive study of travel behavior and trade-off effects. Results suggest that, although the partner who benefits from FWAs tends to carry out domestic provision and maintenance activities, the allocation of tasks within the household is still asymmetrical. Results also outline that the presence of children will intensely affect the…

Vivre le périurbain. Des espaces sous influence urbaine

2013

Barriers and (im)mobility in Rio de Janeiro

2016

In Rio de Janeiro, immobility or the share of people with no journeys on any given day is very high (46%). Immobility has a marked geographical dimension in what is a segregated city. But income has only limited explanatory power. The population structure, with high proportions of people who are not in the labour force and who are unemployed, accounts for the high levels of immobility in the poor districts. Although population structure effects prevail, spatial factors such as the severance effect also account for differences between districts. Indeed, Rio de Janeiro features many different types of barriers that affect immobility in several districts and for several population groups. The…

Outer suburbs, car dependence and residential choice in France, In: Planning After Petroleum: Preparing Cities for the Age Beyond Oil

2016

In a discussion of the findings of extensive research of everyday household practices, this chapter suggests effective policy responses to increasingly more expensive petrol prices. Our research involved interviews, observations and analyses of low-income households adapting their mobility practices and residential locations within highly car-dependent urban environments. The chapter examines two main types of practices of households in car-dependent outer suburbs: either households opt 'to stay', forgoing sustained mobility and a varied range of activities, or they choose 'to go' and relocate in areas where travel costs are less of a burden on their budgets. Our research analyzed statistic…

Urban mobility and the spatial distribution of economic activities in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

2017

International audience; In developing countries such as Brazil, the economic growth is gradually improving the population's standard of living, resulting in major impacts on urban mobility, particularly with regard to motor vehicle access. Between 2001 and 2012, the total growth of the car fleet in Brazil was around 3.5 million (Rodrigues, 2013), with 5.4% of this growth only in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro. Presently, the city is experiencing severe congestion episodes (Beyer, 2012), due to saturation of the main roads, and a fragmented and inefficient public transport system. For a country in economic development in the 21st century, it is very important to plan and monitor the …

2007

The automobile dependence raises the question of social economic standard in mobility. In the outer suburbs of Paris, the automobile is the key element that determines the location of general services and the access of households to those services. Yet, this appreciation must be moderated according to territories and populations. Some territories depend less on the automobile, and part of households have developed an alternative system of mobility that partially compensates the absence or the low access to automobile equipment. If non motorized households remain socially marginalized because of the automobile dependence, the motorized households are not free from this risk either. Our obser…

Weak ties that bind : do commutes bind Montreal's Central and suburban economies ?

2009

ACL; International audience; Using Montreal as a case study, the authors investigate whether overlapping labor markets explain economic links between the suburbs and the central city. Despite interconnection between labor markets, they find only weak evidence of commuting ties between particular suburbs and the city center. However, economic functions--but also some services and amenities--are distributed unevenly across the metropolitan area. The authors suggest that other connections, such as those generated by occasional consumption activities, interfirm exchanges, and other weak ties could be explored to more fully understand the economic ties between constituent parts of metropolitan a…

Spatial dimensions of e-shopping in France.

2016

Although online purchases still make up only a small share of individuals’ purchases, they increasingly represent an alternative to in-store purchases. This alternative seems even more valuable in sparsely populated areas with poorer access to shops. Online purchases may smooth out spatial constraints on access to tangible goods. The efficiency hypothesis postulates that people with low accessibility tend to buy more online. This study examines this hypothesis. The aim is to check whether online purchasing is more developed in suburban areas and whether online purchasing practices for the inhabitants of such areas are a way of overcoming their poor access to shops. Our results show quite di…

2007

The present article is attempting to identify if the automobile, which took part in development of periurban spaces but which causes strong disparities of mobility between households, according to their incomes and of their age, leads to exclude an increasing part of the population in this spaces. We looked more closely into not-motorized population but also motorized households, of modest income or older age, for which cost or physical requirements of automobile mobility are too high. Our results show that number of not-motorized households, most strongly marginalized, decrease in particular in periurban territories most dependent on car, in spite high level of unemployment and ageing of p…

Gender differences in children escorting practices among dual-earners families in the Paris Region

2014

WIiT Paris 2014 : Women's Issues in Transportation - 5ème Conférence Internationale sur les Femmes et le Transport - Construire les ponts, PARIS , FRANCE, 14-/04/2014 - 16/04/2014; The present article looks to pinpoint explanatory factors for the sharing of escorting of children in dual-earner families. It proposes a detailed analysis of inequalities and interactions in dual-earner families when it comes to escorting children by taking into account the characteristics of trips to and from school for children, the characteristics of the parents' occupations, and the characteristics of the household. Compared with earlier research, the model considers more detailed data about the escorts' job…

Achats en ligne et proximités périurbaines

2015

The effects of home delivery on access to food products: the case of supermarkets and cybermarkets in the metropolitan area of Dijon (France)

2013

International audience; Home delivery is a service proposed by supermarkets either via online shopping or after shopping in the store and consists in transporting the goods purchased to the customer's home. It is currently difficult to estimate the turnover generated by such services but it is supposedly very low. One reason is that, nationwide, online shopping in cybermarkets is not a widespread practice. Turnover for the AuchanDirect cybermarket, for example, is reported to be just 45% of that of any single one of the company's hypermarkets. varies across geographical space. Whereas the urban population of city centres has a diversified supply within walking distance, periurban and rural …

2008

The access of populations to services, out of the dense urban centres, is marked by the retreat of the services of proximity to which populations and local councillors appear particularly attached. However, in peri-urban spaces, this remote setting of the resources compared to the populations is the result of the generalized adoption of the automobile standard for mobility and accessibility. That has two effects: first a disintegration of the local offer, then a disintegration of the modal alternatives to the private car, because of relocalizations of services and populations which privilege car for their accessibility and call into question their access by other modes like public transport…

2017
