Search for the Xb and other hidden-beauty states in the π+π−ϒ(1S) channel at ATLAS

2015

This Letter presents a search for a hidden-beauty counterpart of the X(3872) in the mass ranges 10.05--10.31 GeV and 10.40--11.00 GeV, in the channel Xb→π+π−Υ(1S)(→μ+μ−), using 16.2 fb−1 of s√=8 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No evidence for new narrow states is found, and upper limits are set on the product of the Xb cross section and branching fraction, relative to those of the Υ(2S), at the 95% confidence level using the CLS approach. These limits range from 0.8% to 4.0%, depending on mass. For masses above 10.1 GeV, the expected upper limits from this analysis are the most restrictive to date. Searches for production of the Υ(13DJ), Υ(10860), and Υ(110…

Measurement of exclusive γγ→ℓ+ℓ− production in proton–proton collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2015

This Letter reports a measurement of the exclusive gamma gamma -> l(+)l(-) (l = e, mu) cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1). For the electron or muon pairs satisfying exclusive selection criteria, a fit to the dilepton acoplanarity distribution is used to extract the fiducial cross-sections. The cross-section in the electron channel is determined to be sigma(excl)(gamma gamma -> e+e-) = 0.428 +/- 0.035 (stat.) +/- 0.018 (syst.) pbfor a phase-space region with invariant mass of the electron pairs greater than 24GeV, in which both electrons have transverse momentum p(T)…

Function Studies of the Spleen Using Radioactive-Labeled and Heat-Denatured Erythrocytes and their Clinical Value

1971

The RES as an especially active, functionally versatile, and very extended system has its most important concentration of tissue in the spleen. Till now it was possible only to investigate this organ by cytological and histological methods. Clinical function tests of the spleen were completely unknown until recently. Such investigations have now become possible by labeling the blood cells with gamma-emitting radioisotopes and the development of external counting techniques.

Time-optimal control of the purification of a qubit in contact with a structured environment

2019

We investigate the time-optimal control of the purification of a qubit interacting with a structured environment, consisting of a strongly coupled two-level defect in interaction with a thermal bath. On the basis of a geometric analysis, we show for weak and strong interaction strengths that the optimal control strategy corresponds to a qubit in resonance with the reservoir mode. We investigate under which conditions qubit coherence and correlation between the qubit and the environment can speed up the control process.

Hunting the plant surrender signal activating apoplexy in grapevines after Neofusicoccum parvum infection

2021

SummaryApoplectic breakdown from Grapevines Trunk Diseases (GTDs) has become a serious challenge to viticulture in consequence to drought stress. We hypothesise that fungal aggressiveness is controlled by a chemical communication between host and colonising fungus. We introduce the new concept of a “plant surrender signal” accumulating in host plants under stress and triggering aggressive behaviour of the strain Neofusicoccum parvum (Bt-67) causing Botryosphaeriaceae-related dieback in grapevines.Using a cell-based experimental system (Vitis cells) and bioactivity-guided fractionation, we identify trans-ferulic acid, a monolignol precursor, as “surrender signal”. Self-assembly of 1- and 2-Dimensional Multicompartmental Arrays via the 2-Aminopyrimidine H-Bonding Motif and Selective Guest Inclusion

2000

Abstract The H-bond mediated self-assembly of aminopyrimidine substituted anthracene derivatives 4 and 5, respectively, generate 1- and 2-dimensional multicompartmental arrays in the solid state as revealed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The derived ‘pigeon-hole’ lattice is defined by syn-coplanar positioning of anthracene moieties at a distance of ca. 7 A, allowing the formation of selective clathrate-type inclusion entities with guests of appropriate shape and size, in particular phenazine, which presents both structural and interactional complementarity. These data provide insight into the interplay of the different structural and interactional features of the molecular components t…

Exploring the 2,2′-Diamino-5,5′-bipyrimidine Hydrogen-Bonding Motif: A Modular Approach to Alkoxy-Functionalized Hydrogen-Bonded Networks

1998

The programmed self-association of 2,2’-diamino-4,4’-dialkoxy-5,5’-bipyrimidines allows for the de novo construction of alkoxy-functionalized H-bonded ribbons and sheets as evidenced by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The data provide insight into the interplay of the different structural and interactional features of the molecular components to the generation of the supramolecular assembly. Hydrophobicity of the didodecyl side chains of 4c leads to the dominance of the H-bonding factor, resulting in the formation of a fully interconnected array. These results define the utility of the of 2,2’-diamino-4,4’-dialkoxy-5,5’-bipyrimidines as a potential scaffold for the attachment of electro- o…

Catheterization of the Portal Vein by the Transumbilical Approach for Intrahepatic Chemotherapy

1983

For patients with colorectal malignomas and surgically nonresectable metastases, regional long-term perfusion with chemotherapeutic drugs may be valuable, according to the current view. Several techniques are used for regional long-term liver perfusion; either the arterial approach via the hepatic artery or a venous approach via the portal vein can be chosen. A long-term catheter can be implanted in the hepatic artery or the portal vein during the resection of the primary tumor or during the “second-look” procedure. In either case a laparotomy has to be done.

Search for long-lived stoppedR-hadrons decaying out of time withppcollisions using the ATLAS detector

2013

An updated search is performed for gluino, top squark, or bottom squark R-hadrons that have come to rest within the ATLAS calorimeter, and decay at some later time to hadronic jets and a neutralino, using 5.0 and 22.9 fb(-1) of pp collisions at 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. Candidate decay events are triggered in selected empty bunch crossings of the LHC in order to remove pp collision backgrounds. Selections based on jet shape and muon system activity are applied to discriminate signal events from cosmic ray and beam-halo muon backgrounds. In the absence of an excess of events, improved limits are set on gluino, stop, and sbottom masses for different decays, lifetimes, and neutralino masses. …

Die Milzszintigraphie als Methode zur funktionellen Milzanalyse

1970

1. Percussion and palpation are only a superficial and subjective measure for the determination of a splenic tumor. Comparative scintigraphic and clinical investigations in more than 4,000 patients have shown that about 50% of spleens weighing between 600 and 750 g are not palpable. Considering the widespread use of radioisotope scanning it seems justified to claim that the size of the spleen during clinical investigation should be determined by a scan. In scientific problems one has to insist on the use of this method in any case. 2. Depending on the fact that until now no functional test for the spleen is available, it is of great importance that it is now possible to carry out a highly a…

Splenic respiratory gas exchange and glucose uptake in patients with splenomegaly in hypersplenism and Hodgkin's disease.

1977

Blood samples are taken from the splenic artery, vein and pulp of patients suffering from Hodgkin's disease (n=10) or hypersplenism (n=7) and undergoing splenectomy. In these samples, the relevant parameters of the respiratory gas exchange as well as glucose and lactate concentrations are determined. In hypersplenism (mean splenic wet weight: 543 g) the mean oxygen consumption of the splenic tissue amounts to 0.9 ml O2/100 g/min taking into account a mean splenic blood flow of 80 ml/100 g/min. The glucose uptake and the lactate release are 9 mg/100 g/min and 5.5 mg/100 g/min, respectively. These values are in close agreement with the results obtained in the normal and undisturbed spleen in …

Performance of the upgraded PreProcessor of the ATLAS Level-1 Calorimeter Trigger

2020

The PreProcessor of the ATLAS Level-1 Calorimeter Trigger prepares the analogue trigger signals sent from the ATLAS calorimeters by digitising, synchronising, and calibrating them to reconstruct transverse energy deposits, which are then used in further processing to identify event features. During the first long shutdown of the LHC from 2013 to 2014, the central components of the PreProcessor, the Multichip Modules, were replaced by upgraded versions that feature modern ADC and FPGA technology to ensure optimal performance in the high pile-up environment of LHC Run 2. This paper describes the features of the newMultichip Modules along with the improvements to the signal processing achieved.

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

2020

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (eþe− þ p or μþμ− þ p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of ffiffiffi s p ¼ 13 TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb−1. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee þ p (μμ þ p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced f…

Study of heavy-flavor quarks produced in association with top-quark pairs at s=7  TeV using the ATLAS detector

2014

Using a sample of dilepton top-quark pair ((tt) over bar) candidate events, a study is performed of the production of top-quark pairs together with heavy-flavor (HF) quarks, the sum of (tt) over bar + b + X and (tt) over bar + c + X, collectively referred to as (tt) over bar + HF. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The presence of additional HF (b or c) quarks in the (tt) over bar sample is inferred by looking for events with at least three b-tagged jets, where two are attributed to the b quarks from the (tt) over bar decays a…
