Within the vast area of research relating to visual strategies as a rhetorical means par excellence, the paper deals with Cicero’s way of using the term ante oculos and other related expressions in the orations. Due to the frequent and seemingly deliberate use of these expressive means, we can assume that there was a precise communication strategy aimed at exploiting the potential of rhetoric to connect, in an effective and productive way, image and speech, visual strategies and the evocative power of words.

Exploring students’ metacognition in relation to an integral-area evaluation task

Several studies have been conducted to explore students’ understanding of the integral-area relationships, however, only a few focused on students’ metacognition in relation to this topic. In this study, students’ metacognitive knowledge, skills, and experiences in relation to an integral-area evaluation task are explored using semi-structured interviews and think-aloud protocol. The results show that several students developed monitoring strategies in relation to integral-area relationships; however, they do not use these strategies when solving integral-area tasks. Atomic scale surface modification of TiO2 3D nano-arrays: plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition of NiO for photocatalysis

Here we report the development of a new scalable and transferable plasma assisted atomic layer deposition (PEALD) process for the production of uniform, conformal and pinhole free NiO with sub-nanometre control on a commercial ALD reactor. In this work we use the readily available nickel precursor nickelocene in conjunction with O2 plasma as a co-reagent (100 W) over a temperature range of 75–325 °C. Bioremediation is a promising technology for the treatment of hydrocarbon (HC) contaminated soils that is based on the biodegradation capacities of native or introduced microbial populations. Biotractability tests are essential for choosing the optimal bioremediation treatment. Do Female Loan Officers Mitigate Social-Financial Trade-Offs in Microfinance?

This paper revisits social-financial trade-offs in microfinance. We theorize that workforce diversity mitigates the divergence between social and financial performance levels. We test our prediction by performing fixed-effects generalised least squares regressions on a global sample of 1257 microfinance institutions (MFIs) in 107 countries over the period 2010–2018. Confirming our prediction, the empirical results show that the proportion of female loan officers attenuates the negative relationship between the social performance and the financial performance of MFIs.
