Abstract Ionic selectivity in nanopores is usually based either on steric or charge exclusion mechanisms. By simultaneously incorporating both mechanisms into a functionalized membrane, an improved control over selectivity can be achieved. We describe the fabrication and experimental characterization of alkali metal cation-selective nanopores in heavy ion-tracked polyimide (PI) membranes using the soft-etching (SE) technique. The latent ion tracks in the PI membrane are selectively dissolved by an organic solvent to form tiny pores without affecting the bulk material. Amateur runners usually run carrying implements in their hands (keys, a mobile phone, or a bottle of water). However, there is a lack of literature about the effects of different handloads on impact accelerations. Thus, this study aimed to analyse the effects of carrying different objects in the hand on impact accelerations during running. Nineteen male recreational runners (age 24.3 ± 6.8 years, training volume of 25 ± 7.38 km/week) performed twenty minutes of running on a treadmill at 2.78 m/s with four different conditions: no extra weight, with keys, with a mobile phone, and with a bottle of water. Pressure-dependent modifications in the optical and electronic properties of Fe(IO3)3: the role of Fe 3d and I 5p lone–pair electrons

We have determined by means of optical-absorption experiments that Fe(IO3)3 is an indirect band-gap material with a band-gap energy of 2.1 eV. This makes this compound the iodate with the smallest band gap. We also found that under compression the band-gap energy has an unusual non-linear pressure dependence, which is followed by an abrupt and discontinuous decrease of the band gap at 24 GPa. The observed behavior is explained by means of density-functional calculations, which show that the behavior of the band gap is governed by the combined influence of Fe 4d and I 5p lone pair electrons. The chalcogen bonding (ChB) in a series of thiourea, selenourea and their derivatives has been investigated in the present paper. Thus, selenourea and dimethylselenourea undergo dimerization and trimerization processes in the presence of various halogen species (1–5). Selenourea and dimethylselenourea form trimers 3–4 in the presence of lighter halogens (chlorine and bromine) through Se⋯Se chalcogen bonding. When moving to heavier halogen (iodine), the dimers 1–2 are formed. Thiourea and its derivatives also tend to make very strong S⋯S bonds and form dimers in the case of lighter halogens chlorine and bromine (compounds 6–7). Owing to a sparse canopy and a deep rooting system, walnut is an ideal species for alley cropping, an agroforestry practice able to enhance productivity through interplant facilitative mechanisms. Walnut agroforestry requires the large scale production of seedling rootstocks selected to provide the best anchorage, vigour, and tolerance of pathogens. Due to the heterozygosity of walnut, the characteristics of agronomical interest of the chosen cultivar are not inherited via seed propagation.
