Incantesimi e rituali magici nelle tradizioni germaniche medievali: una introduzione

2021

The approach to charms and magical formulas of the Germanic world has developed on an evolutionary path that has from time to time favoured perspectives of different scientific categories, and has been faced on philological, linguistic, semantic-pragmatic, semiotic and historical-literary basis. Starting from different types of criteria and parameters, research has proposed in the past various classifications of charms, intended as specific textual forms, which are identified by the presence of characteristic contents and structural elements. Given the fluidity of matter, the phenomenon of charms and magical formulas of the Germanic area should be seen in a dynamic key, applying different i…

Progettare città liquide

2021

Urban waterfronts are today one of the most prolific variants of augmented cities: fluid and hybrid places where resources, opportunities, aspirations and ambitions of cities are translated into visions, new relations and projects. The creative port city is capable of reactivating new fluid metabolism, generating new architectural forms and producing new landscapes. The permanent flows of urban culture, grounding on the waterfront, are capable to fuel huge relational networks, making cities more dynamic, communicative and competitive. The most important implication of waterfront regeneration is that this particular area should be addressed as a structural and strategic element of the city a…

2021

One of the current global challenges is to find novel, clean and efficient techniques for the energy production. The use of electrochemical cells and hydrogen is one of the solutions. These cells convert the excess energy produced by conventional systems into hydrogen by steam electrolysis. The hydrogen can be stored and transformed into electricity when needed in the fuel cell mode. Among the different electrochemical cells, protonic ceramic electrochemical cells have attracted much attention due to their high efficiency at intermediate temperature (400 – 600 °C). In addition, these systems offer the advantage of not diluting the fuel in electrolysis mode. This thesis work focuses on the e…

Late Griesbachian (early Triassic) ammonoids and nautiloids from the Dinwoody Formation at Crittenden Springs, Elko County, Nevada.

2021

International audience; We document a relatively small but very important late Griesbachian ammonoid and nautiloid assemblage from the Dinwoody Formation at Crittenden Springs, Elko County, Nevada. This discovery represents the first significant report of late Griesbachian ammonoids in the low-paleolatitudes of eastern Panthalassa, and it also signifies the first report of Wordieoceras wordiei and two co-occurring taxa outside of the Boreal Realm. This similarity in ammonoid faunas, irrespective of paleolatitude, provides support for the concept of weak latitudinal diversity gradients following the end-Permian extinction. The finding is even more noteworthy given the Dinwoody Formation’s re…

Cancer of the Esophagus

2021

In 2015 esophageal cancer (OC) was globally the 11th most common cancer with 483,000 new cases and the 7th most common cause of cancer-related deaths, with 439,000 deaths. Esophageal cancer is a highly lethal disease of older age, sixth to seventh decades, associated with a remarkable decline in health-related quality of life, high mortality, and poor prognosis with an overall 5-year survival no greater than 20%. The two major histological types, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (ADC), while sharing the esophageal site, can be considered like two different neoplastic diseases as they differ in their epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, and treatment. On the Generalizability of Programs Synthesized by Grammar-Guided Genetic Programming

2021

Grammar-guided Genetic Programming is a common approach for program synthesis where the user’s intent is given by a set of input/output examples. For use in real-world software development, the generated programs must work on previously unseen test cases too. Therefore, we study in this work the generalizability of programs synthesized by grammar-guided GP with lexicase selection. As benchmark, we analyze proportionate and tournament selection too. We find that especially for program synthesis problems with a low output cardinality (e.g., a Boolean output) lexicase selection overfits the training cases and does not generalize well to unseen test cases. An analysis using common software metr…

Information Greater than Mobilisation Greater than Interaction: Contours of a Pan-European Style of Social Media Campaigning

2021

This chapter compares the Facebook campaigns of 90 political parties aggregated by the political groups in the EP to which they belong from 12 countries in the 2019 EP election. Based on these results we identify the contours of a pan-European style of social media campaigning that can be described as follows: national contexts dominated and framed the EP elections. In comparison to the three key functions of election campaigns, parties place the most importance by far on information in their use of social media. Calls for mobilisation play a certain role, while the parties seem hardly interested in interactions. The ongoing neglect of social media’s interactive potential in politics calls …

Obstructive Malformations of the Internal Jugular Vein

2021

Obstructive malformations of the internal jugular veins represent a relatively new clinical problem, which as of yet has not been fully understood. In normal subjects, the internal jugular vein is valveless, except for a single valve, situated just above the junction of this vein with the brachiocephalic vein. Usually, normal jugular valves exhibit a two-leaflet structure. Stenotic lesions of these veins were described for the first time in 2009 in a group of multiple sclerosis patients. The most common obstructive malformation of the internal jugular vein is a stenotic valve. There are several morphological types of such aberrant valves, comprising annular stenoses, valves with fused, reve…

Study and Evaluation of Pre-trained CNN Networks for Cultural Heritage Image Classification

2021

The classification of digital images is an essential task during the restoration and preservation of cultural heritage (CH). In computer vision, cultural heritage classification relies on the classification of asset images regarding a certain task such as type, artist, genre, style identification, etc. CH classification is challenging as various CH asset images have similar colors, textures, and shapes. In this chapter, the aim is to study and evaluate the use of pre-trained deep convolutional neural networks such as VGG16, VGG-19, ResNet50, and Inception-V3 for cultural heritage images classification using transfer learning techniques. The main idea is to start with CNN models previously t…

Political Advertising on Facebook

2021

Parties have limited opportunities to determine the audiences of their organic communication. However, Facebook offers sophisticated advertising possibilities which enable parties to sponsor their organic messages in order to target them at selected and narrow segments of the electorate. Information on advertising activity was not available in Europe until Facebook has launched its ‘Ad Library’ right before the 2019 European Parliamentary election which provided access to all political ads and its metadata. By drawing on this data, our chapter will advance on the previous country chapters and investigate parties’ advertising activity in the 12 analysed countries with a specific focus on spo…

Switching Behaviour in Smart Phone Messaging Services : It’s a Question of Context, Content, and Features of the Service

2021

This paper studies switching behaviour in smart phone messaging services. This study aims to add knowledge about the factors affecting switching behaviour in smart phone messaging services. The empirical study is qualitative, and the data was collected with interviews using the laddering method. This study was carried out to find out the reasons behind customer decisions when choosing between smart phone messaging services. Using the Push-Pull Mooring framework, the findings of this study indicate that the switching decision regarding smart phone messaging service is influenced by three factors: the context of the message, the content of the message, and the features of the service.

Visually low-impacting methods for the measurement of parameters related to IAQ risk indicators in exhibition halls

2021

Microclimate for cultural heritage plays a fundamental role in the degradation process of artefacts exhibited in museums. Generally, the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring inside museums is based on conventional measurements of thermo-hygrometry parameters and longtime averaged measurements of atmospheric pollutants’ concentration. Unfortunately, all these approaches require electric supply and are usually characterized by a noticeable visual impact on the exhibition space, which clearly negatively affects the visitors’ experience. This paper intends to revisit and discuss a methodology (and its test application on field, to estimate the risk of damage of three artefacts displayed in an ol…

2021

Monoclonal gammopathy of ocular significance (MGOS) is a rare subset of monoclonal gammopathy of clinical significance occurring secondary to plasma cell disorders and causing ocular manifestations. We identified 23 patients with paraproteinemic keratopathy (PPK) in the setting of monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS, 10), smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM, 3) or multiple myeloma (MM, 10). Many of these patients with PPK (11/23) presented decreased vision. All patients with MM and 40% of those with other diagnoses such as SMM and MGUS received systemic therapy with or without autologous stem cell transplantation. Four eyes of four patients were treated by penetrating keratopla…

The role of the dentist in the diagnosis and management of patients with oral mucosal diseases

2021

Based on a few case reports of oral mucosal diseases a number of questions is raised about the role of dentists-general practitioners in the diagnostic procedure and management of patients with such diseases. For instance, are dentists prepared to prescribe topical corticosteroids and should dentists be taught how and when to take a biopsy? And how about palpation of the neck? A strong recommendation is made to take clinical pictures for proper documentation and, if needed, for telediagnostic procedures. Another issue relates to the communication between dentists and dental specialists when dealing with patients with oral diseases. In case of a patient suffering from burning mouth syndrome …

β-Amyrin Synthase1 Controls the Accumulation of the Major Saponins Present in Pea (Pisum sativum)

2021

Abstract The use of pulses as ingredients for the production of food products rich in plant proteins is increasing. However, protein fractions prepared from pea or other pulses contain significant amounts of saponins, glycosylated triterpenes that can impart an undesirable bitter taste when used as an ingredient in foodstuffs. In this article, we describe the identification and characterization of a gene involved in saponin biosynthesis during pea seed development, by screening mutants obtained from two Pisum sativum TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions IN Genomes) populations in two different genetic backgrounds. The mutations studied are located in a gene designated PsBAS1 (β-amyrin s…

Differential survival throughout the full annual cycle of a migratory bird presents a life‐history trade‐off

2021

1. Long‐distance migrations are among the most physically demanding feats animals perform. Understanding the potential costs and benefits of such behaviour is a fundamental question in ecology and evolution. A hypothetical cost of migration should be outweighed by higher productivity and/or higher annual survival, but few studies on migratory species have been able to directly quantify patterns of survival throughout the full annual cycle and across the majority of a species’ range. 2. Here, we use telemetry data from 220 migratory Egyptian vultures Neophron percnopterus, tracked for 3,186 bird months and across approximately 70% of the species’ global distribution, to test for differences …

A Preliminary Analysis of the Importance of Distance, Angle, and Insight When Soccer Referees Make Penalty Decisions

2021

Soccer referees move freely on the pitch to place themselves in the best location for making decisions. While Football Association UK (FA) highlights that a referee should never be more than 20 m away from the playing situation, previous studies have been inconsistent in indicating appropriate distance to a situation for increasing the likelihood of a correct decision. Further, appropriate angle and insight are also likely to influence the correctness of referees' decisions. The aim of this study was to provide an initial investigation of elite referees' positioning in the field (distance, angle, and insight) when making correct and erroneous decisions in potential penalty situations. An ex…
