A competitive reactivity study on the oxidative cyclization of thiosemicarbazones into 1,3,4-thiadiazoles
2022
Abstract In order to obtain useful insights on the mechanism of formation of 2(3H)-imino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles by oxidative cyclization of aldehyde thiosemicarbazones with Cu(II) or Fe(III) salts, a competitive reactivity study was performed on a suitable set of diversely substituted substrates, by means of HPLC techniques. This approach enabled to exploit Hammett’s equation without performing otherwise difficult-to-run kinetic experiments. The results presented herein support the hypothesis that the formation of the thiadiazole ring is induced by the attack of the oxidizing Lewis acid metal cation onto the imine-like nitrogen atom of the thiosemicarbazone substrate. Beyond mechanistic interpr…
Semi-natural habitats in the European boreal region: Caught in the socio-ecological extinction vortex?
2022
AbstractWe propose to consider semi-natural habitats—hotspots for biodiversity—being caught in a socio-ecological extinction vortex, similar to the phenomenon described for species threatened with extinction. These habitats are essentially socioecological systems, in which socioeconomic drivers are interlinked with ecological processes. We identify four highly interlinked and mutually reinforcing socio-economic processes, pertaining to the importance of semi-natural habitats for (i) agricultural production, (ii) policy, research and development; (iii) vocational education in the fields of agricultural sciences and (iv) public’s experiences with semi-natural habitats. Evidence from six count…
Dynamic Membranes for Enhancing Resources Recovery from Municipal Wastewater
2022
[EN] This paper studied the feasibility of using dynamic membranes (DMs) to treat municipal wastewater (MWW). Effluent from the primary settler of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant was treated using a flat 1 mu m pore size open monofilament polyamide woven mesh as supporting material. Two supporting material layers were required to self-form a DM in the short-term (17 days of operation). Different strategies (increasing the filtration flux, increasing the concentration of operating solids and coagulant dosing) were used to enhance the required forming time and pollutant capture efficiency. Higher permeate flux and increased solids were shown to be ineffective while coagulant dosing sh…
Treatment options in obstructive sleep apnea
2022
AbstractTreatment of OSA with CPAP is currently the recommended treatment and has the greatest evidence of efficacy on AHI, symptoms and comorbidities. Symptomatic patients with moderate-severe OSA generally have good adherence to CPAP therapy, while those with mild OSA, female, young and generally paucisymptomatic, have lower CPAP adherence, especially in the medium and long term. The recent identification of different clinical and pathophysiological phenotypes of OSA has paved the way for alternative treatments to CPAP, leading to an increasingly personalized therapy. Weight loss and lifestyle modifications are highly recommended in all obese or overweight patients. Mandibular advancement…

Volume change response and fabric evolution of granular MX80 bentonite along different hydro-mechanical stress paths
2022
AbstractDespite the increasing understanding of bentonite behaviour, there is still missing evidence on how different hydro-mechanical loadings, including sequences of hydration and compression, affect the fabric and the volume change behaviour of the material. It is generally assumed that the interplay between the behaviour of clay assemblages and the overall fabric of the material is the reason of having final states that are dependent on the stress path followed. Here the results of an experimental campaign aiming to study these factors are reported and discussed. Free swelling and swelling pressure tests were performed, both followed by compression to a relatively high stress. The exper…

It improved glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivi…
EXPLORING DESIS FOR INLAND WATER QUALITY IN SPANISH RESERVOIRS
2022
Abstract. In a first approximation to the use of hyperspectral DESIS data to ocean colour applications in inland waters, we present here a comparison of the DESIS vs. MSI spectra from two reservoirs located in the province of Valencia. Benagerber and Tous are two small, oligo-mesotrophic reservoirs in need of constant water quality monitoring. These preliminary results have shown us the advantages and limitations of DESIS imagery for these types of dark and small lakes, but also pointed out the need for a specific over water atmospheric correction, as well as further understanding of the band combinations that can lead to accurate water quality parameter estimations.
Bio-Waste Products of Mangifera indica L. Reduce Adipogenesis and Exert Antioxidant Effects on 3T3-L1 Cells
2022
Several studies highlighted the beneficial value of natural compounds in the prevention and treatment of obesity. Here, we investigated the anti-obesity effects of extracts of peel and seed of mango (Mangifera indica L.) cultivated in Sicily (Italy) in 3T3-L1 cells. Mango Peel (MPE) and Mango Seed (MSE) extracts at a 100 µg/mL concentration significantly reduced lipid accumulation and triacylglycerol contents during 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation without toxicity. HPLC-ESI-MS analysis showed that both the extracts contain some polyphenolic compounds that can account for the observed biological effects. The anti-adipogenic effect of MPE and MSE was the result of down-regulation of th…

Digitalization and sustainability: virtual reality tourism in a post pandemic world
2022
The government-imposed COVID-19 pandemic control measures brought the tourism sector to a complete halt. However, virtual reality (VR) tourism offered people a way to escape the isolation. Media reports and research have noted heightened activity in VR tourism, which has been touted as “alternative tourism” and “eco-tourism”. However, scholars have yet to determine whether this shift is temporary or will persist after the pandemic is over. Questions also remain regarding the factors driving this behaviour. The present study uses stimulus-organism-response theory (SOR) to propose a sequential mechanism of the interplay of antecedents and outcomes, theorising VR tourism as a sustainable touri…

Violence against Women and Femicide: an analysis on the murders of foreign women in Italy
2022
AbstractThis paper presents the results of a research on the representations of femicide in the judicial field, in Italy. The use of the term femicide is analysed through the lens of the normative process, examining its social meanings and questioning its political and economic anchoring using the “juridical field” model (Bourdieu 1986). The essay is based on a wide theoretical framework. It starts by highlighting the problems evoked by the term ‘femicide’ (Corradi, et al. 2016; Radford and Russell 1992); its declension in criminal law and jurisprudence through its coding in specific types of offence (Merli 2015). The topics of power and imbalance between the sexes (Goffman 1977) are analys…

Understanding the Impact of Trampling on Rodent Bones
2022
Experiments based on the premise of uniformitarism are an effective tool to establish patterns of taphonomic processes acting either before, or after, burial. One process that has been extensively investigated experimentally is the impact of trampling to large mammal bones. Since trampling marks caused by sedimentary friction strongly mimic cut marks made by humans using stone tools during butchery, distinguishing the origin of such modifications is especially relevant to the study of human evolution. In contrast, damage resulting from trampling on small mammal fossil bones has received less attention, despite the fact that it may solve interesting problems relating to site formation proces…

The capillary waves' contribution to wind-wave generation
2022
Published theories and observations have shown that dissipation of gravity waves implies frequency downshifting of wave energy. Hence, for wind-waves, the wind energy input to the highest frequencies is of special interest. Here it is shown that this input is vital, because the direct wind energy input obtained by the air-pressure’s work on most gravity waves is slightly less than what the waves need to grow. Further, the wind’s input of the angular momentum that waves need to grow is found to be absent at most gravity wave frequencies. The capillary waves that appear at the surface of the sea when the wind is blowing solve these problems. To demonstrate this, an extension of linear wave th…
Unpacking Relational Dignity: In Pursuit of an Ethic of Care for Outdoor Therapies
2022
Dignity is a universal principle that requires us to treat every person as having worth beyond who a particular person is or what they do. Dignity is a complex and sometimes contested idea, that at times can be compromised in health care and allegedly also within the practice of outdoor therapy. Outdoor therapies comprise a range of therapeutic approaches including nature-based therapy, adventure therapy, animal-assisted therapy, forest therapy, wilderness therapy, surf therapy, and more. Within the literature of outdoor therapies there has been limited research on ethics related to common understandings of care concepts such as relational dignity and human rights. The aim of this paper is …
A symmetric tangent stiffness approach to cohesive mechanical interfaces in large displacements
2022
The present article proposes a formulation for a cohesive interface element in large displacement conditions. Theoretical and computational aspects, useful for an effective and efficient finite element implementation, are examined in details. A six-node (or higher) isoparametric interface element for two dimensional cohesive fracture propagation problems is developed. The element operators are consistently derived by a variational approach enforced in the current configuration, where a current frame is defined with axes tangential and normal to the middle line of the interface opening displacement gap. Under the constitutive assumption of small value of the modulus of the vector product bet…
Sampling Design in SHARE Wave 8 and Recruitment of Refreshment Samples until the Suspension of Fieldwork
2022
The aim of the SHARE survey design is to be able to draw inferences about the population of people aged 50 years or older across countries by using probability-based sampling. This chapter documents the sampling design adopted in the eighth wave of SHARE that had to be suspended due to COVID-19 in March 2020. Starting with a definition of the SHARE target population, we describe the protocol for harmonizing and documenting the sampling procedure and present the sampling frames used by the countries that recruited a baseline or refreshment sample in Wave 8. We then discuss some important aspects of the SHARE sampling designs, such as stratification, clustering, variation in selection probabi…
