Are Humans Poor at Arguing? From the ‘Argumentative Theory of Reasoning’ back to a Rhetorical Theory of Argumentation

2018

Starting from Sperber and Mercier’s theory (2011) on the relationship between reasoning and arguing, we will try to rethink the link between rhetoric and argumentation. Using Aristotelian rhetoric as a theoretical framework, we will focus on two related features: 1) the nature and the role of argumentation inferences in classical models of rhetoric; 2) the role of normativity in assessing a naturalistic description of what we make when we argue.

96.I CC. The attribution of the use of the family home made by the spouses to one of them in a regulatory agreement implies the loss of the “family” status of the home, which prevents it from being subsequently attributed to the custodial spouse under art. 96.I CC. In this case…

Introduction: Uncertain Biographies? A Focus on Migrants’ Life Courses

2018

This book focuses on the uncertainties revealed by migrants’ biographies whose shapes are less conventional or patterned, while their family, work, and educational careers are simultaneously more fragmented and intermingled. As Gardner (Age, Narrative and Migration: The Life Course and Life Histories of Bengali Elders in London. Oxford: Berg Publishers, 2002) contends, there is a more pressing need to address the meaning and shape of life course in migrants’ case. The chapters ask therefore: What challenges migrants and returnees face when trying to make sense of their life courses after years of experience in other countries with different age norms and cultural values? How can they reconc…

Models of Data Quality

2018

The research proposes a new approach to data quality management presenting three groups of DSL (Domain Specific Language). The first language group uses concept of data object in order to describe data to be analysed, the second group describes the requirements on data quality, and the third group describes data quality management process. The proposed approach deals with development of executable quality specifications for each kind of data objects. The specification can be executed step-by-step according to business process descriptions, ensuring the gradual accumulation of data in the database and data quality verification according to the specific use case.

Classification of Gingival Recession

2018

Gingival recession is a common finding in many patients and is clinically manifested by an apical displacement of the gingival margin in relation to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ). Various classification systems have been proposed to classify gingival recession defects and to predict final root coverage outcomes. Among them, the Miller classification is still the most commonly used among dental practitioners and researchers. This chapter reviews the different classification systems available for gingival recession defects and explores the strengths and limitations of them.

“Are There New Chemotherapy Drugs Behind the Corner?”

2018

Up to now, the backbone of both adjuvant and palliative chemotherapy for colorectal cancer is still represented by 5-fluorouracil (5FU). However, we have currently several approved drugs with significant clinical activity in metastatic colon cancer. Apart from cytotoxics such as oxaliplatin, irinotecan, and fluoropyrimidines, we have antiangiogenics (bevacizumab, aflibercept, and ramucirumab), anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as regorafenib. Despite remarkable prolongation of median survival, exceeding 24 months, most patients will be progressing over different lines of therapy, and there is a need and a role for new compounds to be added to …

The application of electroanalytical methods to determine affinity series of metal cations for functional biosorbent groups

2018

Abstract The affinity of the selected heavy metal cations: Mn 2 + , Ni 2 + , Cu 2 + , Zn 2 + , Cd 2 + , Pb 2 + and Na + , K + , Mg 2 + , Ca 2 + was determined for the functional groups located on the surface of leached barley middlings, so called Brewer's spent grain (BSG) – a by-product of the brewing industry. A simple method for determining the affinity series, with the use of a conductivity meter and a pH-meter, was described. It was demonstrated that the affinity of cations for the functional groups located on the surface of the BSG increases in the series: Na + + 2 + 2 +  ≈ Zn 2 + 2 +  ≈ Ca 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + , and the series was determined by comparing concentrations expressed in gram e…

Roman Women e Public History: la creatività del Web

2018

Harvesting changes mating behaviour in European lobster

2018

Removing individuals from a wild population can affect the availability of prospective mates and the outcome of competitive interactions, with subsequent effects on mating patterns and sexual selection. Consequently, the rate of harvest‐induced evolution is predicted to be strongly dependent on the strength and dynamics of sexual selection, yet there is limited empirical knowledge on the interplay between selective harvesting and the mating systems of exploited species. In this study, we used genetic parentage assignment to compare mating patterns of the highly valued and overexploited European lobster (Homarus gammarus) in a designated lobster reserve and nearby fished area in southern Nor…

Modelling strategies for the reduction of fat dormice in northern Italian hazel groves

2018

The production of hazelnuts represents an important resource for several Italian rural areas. Sicily and Piedmont, two of the most important producers of hazelnuts, are affected by the presence of the dormouse (Glis glis), that has considerably severely harmed the production of hazelnuts. This study aims to analyse the issue in the Province of Cuneo in Piedmont and to evaluate the sustainability of the policies implemented by using the system dynamics (SD) methodology. An SD predator-prey microworld was built to reproduce the main relevant cause and effect relationships between the development of the dormouse population and local hazelnut production. The results of the SD microworld simulat…

Quality Management in Service Desk : How Does Service Desk Managers Define and Measure Quality

2018

Many public and private sector organisations are depending on IT services provided by external service providers. The quality of the service affects the customer satisfaction and consequently the customer behaviour. The concept of quality has many meanings in the literature. In this paper, we study how service desk managers perceive the concept of quality and how to manage it in an organisation which has adopted ITIL. Our findings indicate that the quality is seen only in terms of how the agreed service levels are achieved. This view excludes the quality of the processes used to deliver IT services. Quality measurements are reflecting the perception of the concept of quality. peerReviewed

Sclerostin and antisclerostin antibody serum levels predict the presence of axial spondyloarthritis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

2018

Objective. The early diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-associated spondyloarthritis (SpA/IBD) in patients affected by IBD represents a major topic in clinical practice; in particular, to date there are no available serum biomarkers revealing the presence of joint inflammation in these patients. Sclerostin (SOST), an antagonist of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, and antisclerostin-immunoglobulin G (anti-SOST–IgG) have been recently studied in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) as a putative marker of disease activity.Methods.SOST and anti-SOST-IgG serum levels were assayed in 125 patients with IBD, 85 with axial or peripheral SpA, and in control groups (patients with AS and rheu…

A smart and operator independent system to delineate tumours in Positron Emission Tomography scans

2018

Abstract Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging has an enormous potential to improve radiation therapy treatment planning offering complementary functional information with respect to other anatomical imaging approaches. The aim of this study is to develop an operator independent, reliable, and clinically feasible system for biological tumour volume delineation from PET images. Under this design hypothesis, we combine several known approaches in an original way to deploy a system with a high level of automation. The proposed system automatically identifies the optimal region of interest around the tumour and performs a slice-by-slice marching local active contour segmentation. It automa…

USA on the road: da The Americans di Robert Frank ad American Surfaces di Stephen Shore

2018

Robert Frank’s and Stephen Shore’s photographic reportages and their travels document an identity of the United States different from the conventional representations that usually show a successful country, able to enforce its social, economic, political, and aesthetics models. These reportages represent an other America, far from the stereotypes and full of contradictions: the places of common experience (almost non-places), the characters disillusioned and frustrated by the American dream, the banality of the situations represented, the commonplace, show that besides a winner’s imagery (like, recently, the one represented by Trump but also by Pete Souza, official photographer of Barack Ob…

Measurement of UV-induced absorption and scattering losses in photosensitive fibers

2018

UV-assisted fabrication of gratings using photosensitive fibers is a well-established technique, based on the UV-induced permanent modification of the refractive index of the fiber material. As a result, the absorption coefficient is also changed. Here, we exploit the thermal sensitivity of whispering gallery mode resonances of the fiber itself to measure the profile of the heating along an irradiated fiber versus the input power and for different UV radiation intensities. Our technique allows discriminating between the absorption and scattering contributions to the overall losses, by comparing the results obtained with our technique with direct transmission measurements. Different photosen…

Genomic traits of Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614, an uncommon metal-nanoparticle producer strain isolated from acid mine drainages

2018

Background Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 - isolated from acid mine drainages - grows anaerobically using Fe(III)-citrate as sole carbon and energy source, unlike other enterobacteria and K. oxytoca clinical isolates. The DSM 29614 strain is multi metal resistant and produces metal nanoparticles that are embedded in its very peculiar capsular exopolysaccharide. These metal nanoparticles were effective as antimicrobial and anticancer compounds, chemical catalysts and nano-fertilizers. Results The DSM 29614 strain genome was sequenced and analysed by a combination of in silico procedures. Comparative genomics, performed between 85 K. oxytoca representatives and K. oxytoca DSM 29614, revealed th…

This paper discusses the question of building the awareness and strengthening the positive image of the brand of the Museum of Opole University in the local community. The main goal is to become familiar with the process of evoking in visitors’ minds certain associations and emotions unambiguously identified with a positive image of the brand of the Museum and the University. A separate section has been dedicated to the analysis of the relationship between the historic building of the Collegium Maius, where the Museum is located, and the exhibition space endowed with the proper graphic layout referring to the history and culturally active role of the University. Prawa społeczne pracowników a prawa pracodawców - przedsiębiorców na rynku wewnętrznym Unii Europejskiej

2018

Idea i państwo: korona Królestwa Czech w latach 1457-1547 T. 4. Król i stany cz. 1. Siła słabości? Długie późne rządy Władysława II

2018

This book is devoted to the twenty-six years of King Vladislaus’ reign in the Bohemian state, mostly absent in the country, who in 1490 also assumed the Hungarian throne. It is difficult to assess the King’s actions. On the one hand, the monarch seemed to have acted cautiously. On the other hand, many of his undertakings appear to be imprudent or even threatening to the integrity of the Bohemian state. It is worth mentioning that he gave the Bohemian Crown fiefs to his brothers, John I Albert and later to Sigismund, from the position of the Hungarian and not the Bohemian ruler. In such circumstances, the Czech states became the guarantor of the state’s stability, also striving to limit the …
