“Geologists at risk of extinction”: this is the opening sentence of an article of March 29, 2016 of “Il Sole 24ORE”, (1) that fits well the difficult situation that this professional category is experiencing in recent years. It has been witnessed, in fact, a strong reduction in the educational offer in both the school and university system, with the number of Departments in Earth Sciences dropped from 29 to 8, accompanied by a progressive reduction in enrollment and graduates, from 1140 in 2002 to 586 in 2008 (2). Polyhydroxyalkanoates from mixed microbial culture: Production and extraction through green methods

2018

Large scale polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production is limited by high production costs compared to that of petroleum-based plastics. Two key factors can be pin down to reduce costs: i) the use of mixed microbial cultures (MMC) instead of pure cultures and ii) the application of cheap and environmental friendly recovery technologies. In this work, the MMC biomass with PHA-accumulating capacity was selected in a sequencing batch reactor fed with a synthetic effluent emulating a fermented oil mill wastewater. The biomass was harvested and transferred to an accumulation reactor, where PHA contents up to 54% of the dry cell weight were obtained, using a mixture of acetic and propionic acids. A c…

València, capital de la infància evacuada

2018

Development of atmospheric correction algorithms for very high spectral and spatial resolution images: application to SEOSAT and the FLEX/Sentinel-3 …

2018

Advanced high spectral and spatial resolution imager spectrometers on board new generation of Earth Observation missions bring new exciting opportunities to the remote sensing scientific community. However, this progress goes hand in hand with new challenges. The exploitation of data acquired from these family of advanced instruments requires new processing algorithms able to deal with these particularities. As part of this evolution, atmospheric correction algorithms - a mandatory processing step applied prior to the Earth surface reflectance data exploitation - must be adapted or reformulated, thereby paying special attention to how atmospheric effects disturb the acquired signal in the s…

Variation of student engagement between different algebra tasks

2018

In this study, we analyse how 7th grade students’ engagement during small group work differed in two consecutive algebra lessons: in the first lesson students solved equa-tions and in the second lesson they created equations for other small groups to solve. Data was collected by videorecording the work of two groups in both lessons. Through directed content analysis, categories indicating student engagement were formed based on previous research and refined during analysis. The analysis revealed a change from individual engagement to collaborative engagement between lessons and an increase in many passive students’ engagement. Task characteristics which may affect the type and amount of eng…

Ius facit populum.

2018

In 1961, Walter Ullmann studied the characteristics of Politics and Government in the Middle Ages and he theorized two different models of power and law: the Ascending and Descending Themes of Government. In the same years, Francesco Calasso encouraged a renewal of Legal History and he developed the system of ius commune. Going through the famous theory proposed by Ullmann in Principles of Government and Politics in the Middle Ages, this paper aims at analyzing the concept of power during the period of ius commune and connecting these observations with the Calasso’s lesson.

Abstract Let f : X → B be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of curves of genus g ≥ 2 . We obtain a lower bound of the slope λ ( f ) increasing with the gonality of the general fiber of f. In particular, we show that λ ( f ) ≥ 4 provided that f is non-hyperelliptic and g ≥ 16 .

Mixing and ageing in the polar lower stratosphere in winter 2015–2016

2018

We present data from winter 2015–2016, which were measured during the POLSTRACC (The Polar Stratosphere in a Changing Climate) aircraft campaign between December 2015 and March 2016 in the Arctic upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The focus of this work is on the role of transport and mixing between aged and potentially chemically processed air masses from the stratosphere which have midlatitude and low-latitude air mass fractions with small transit times originating at the tropical lower stratosphere. By combining measurements of CO, N2O and SF6 we estimate the evolution of the relative contributions of transport and mixing to the UTLS composition over the course of the winte…

The Underestimated Significance of Conditioning in Placebo Hypoalgesia and Nocebo Hyperalgesia

2018

Placebo and nocebo effects are intriguing phenomena in pain perception with important implications for clinical research and practice because they can alleviate or increase pain. According to current theoretical accounts, these effects can be shaped by verbal suggestions, social observational learning, and classical conditioning and are necessarily mediated by explicit expectation. In this review, we focus on the contribution of conditioning in the induction of placebo hypoalgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia and present accumulating evidence that conditioning independent from explicit expectation can cause these effects. Especially studies using subliminal stimulus presentation and implicit con…

Virtual Reality and Games

2018

The concept of Virtual Reality (VR) dates back to around 1930, where different technologies and concepts arise. For instance, in 1929 Edward Link created the Link Trainer (further patented in 1931), reported to be the first example of a commercial flight simulator, being entirely electromechanical. Also, in the 1930s, the visionary, science fiction writer Stanley G. Weinbaum brings a story (Pygmalion’s Spectacles) that introduces the early idea of a pair of goggles that makes the wearer experience a fictional world through holograms, smell, taste, and touch. Weinbaum describes uncanny experiences for those wearing the goggles, aligned with the modern experiences of VR. It is in the mid 1950…

Detection of Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 1 (FGFR1) Transactivation by Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptors (mAChRs) in Primary Neuronal Hippocamp…

2018

In addition to their canonical intracellular signals involved in the regulation of neuronal plasticity, G-protein coupled receptors can also rapidly transactivate tyrosine kinase receptors and their downstream intracellular signaling in absence of specific ligands. Here we describe our protocol for dissociating and maintaining hippocampal primary neurons in high- and low-density culture, followed by a description of methods employed to evaluate neurite outgrowth and protein phosphorylation associated with fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 transactivation by muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Our goal was to provide the reader with detailed protocols of the abovementioned techniques and t…

The rank of random regular digraphs of constant degree

2018

Abstract Let d be a (large) integer. Given n ≥ 2 d , let A n be the adjacency matrix of a random directed d -regular graph on n vertices, with the uniform distribution. We show that the rank of A n is at least n − 1 with probability going to one as n grows to infinity. The proof combines the well known method of simple switchings and a recent result of the authors on delocalization of eigenvectors of A n .

Model order effects on ICA of resting-state complex-valued fMRI data : application to schizophrenia

2018

Abstract Background Component splitting at higher model orders is a widely accepted finding for independent component analysis (ICA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. However, our recent study found that intact components occurred with subcomponents at higher model orders. New method This study investigated model order effects on ICA of resting-state complex-valued fMRI data from 82 subjects, which included 40 healthy controls (HCs) and 42 schizophrenia patients. In addition, we explored underlying causes for distinct component splitting between complex-valued data and magnitude-only data by examining model order effects on ICA of phase fMRI data. Theology and the public arena from a Polish point of view

2018
