Inflammation et maladies métaboliques : analyse par imagerie du métabolisme des lipoprotéines et lipopolysaccharides au cours de l’inflammation

2021

LPS (lipopolysaccharides) are endotoxins originating from Gram-negative bacteria. They have been extensively described for their ability to interact with and disrupt the intestinal barrier. These toxins are able to cross the gut barrier and to pass into the blood (endotoxemia), leading tolow-grade metabolic inflammation or to a severe inflammatory syndrome (SIRS). Fortunately, some circulating proteins such as PLTP (Phospholipid Transfer Protein) are able to transfer LPS to plasma lipoproteins in order to inactivate and detoxify them. The main goals of this study were to investigate the metabolic fate of LPS from the gut and peritoneal cavity but also the influence of PLTP on these toxins in…

Intrinsic Point Defects in Silica for Fiber Optics Applications

2021

Due to its unique properties, amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2) or silica is a key material in many technological fields, such as high-power laser systems, telecommunications, and fiber optics. In recent years, major efforts have been made in the development of highly transparent glasses, able to resist ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. However the widespread application of many silica-based technologies, particularly silica optical fibers, is still limited by the radiation-induced formation of point defects, which decrease their durability and transmission efficiency. Although this aspect has been widely investigated, the optical properties of certain defects and the correlation betwee…

Uniformization of metric surfaces using isothermal coordinates

2021

We establish a uniformization result for metric surfaces - metric spaces that are topological surfaces with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Using the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we show that a metric surface that can be covered by quasiconformal images of Euclidean domains is quasiconformally equivalent to a Riemannian surface. To prove this, we construct suitable isothermal coordinates.

Robust Antigen-Specific T Cell Activation within Injectable 3D Synthetic Nanovaccine Depots

2021

Contains fulltext : 244693.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Synthetic cancer vaccines may boost anticancer immune responses by co-delivering tumor antigens and adjuvants to dendritic cells (DCs). The accessibility of cancer vaccines to DCs and thereby the delivery efficiency of antigenic material greatly depends on the vaccine platform that is used. Three-dimensional scaffolds have been developed to deliver antigens and adjuvants locally in an immunostimulatory environment to DCs to enable sustained availability. However, current systems have little control over the release profiles of the cargo that is incorporated and are often characterized by an initial high-burst release. Here,…

Dynamical learning of a photonics quantum-state engineering process

2021

Abstract. Experimental engineering of high-dimensional quantum states is a crucial task for several quantum information protocols. However, a high degree of precision in the characterization of the noisy experimental apparatus is required to apply existing quantum-state engineering protocols. This is often lacking in practical scenarios, affecting the quality of the engineered states. We implement, experimentally, an automated adaptive optimization protocol to engineer photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. The protocol, given a target output state, performs an online estimation of the quality of the currently produced states, relying on output measurement statistics, and determine…

Wages, Work, and the Catholic Social Teaching

2021

The Catholic Social Teaching is a rich and relevant source for studying contemporary problems in society. In this paper, I investigate the question about equal pay in light of the social teaching. During the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in equal pay and related concepts like universal basic income. By equal pay we mean that everyone in society receives the same remuneration regardless of the type of work, level of effort, or unemployed or not. From an economic point of view, there are large negative incentive effects with such an arrangement. The reason is that the principle of ‘equal pay for all’ breaks the relationship between the workers’ effort and the payment asso…

Negative responses to strategic innovation, a case study of record labels facing streaming

2021

Record labels are organizations in charge of phonographic production at the interface between musicians and the audience. Since the arrival of digital technologies such as the mp3 and the Internet, record labels have had to adapt to several changes: wider distribution channels, dematerialized competitors, customers’ demands for free music, more ephemeral cooperation. Specifically, streaming platforms like Spotify brought a major change known as a strategic innovation. A strategic innovation is a strong change that overturns all previously established values in the sector (renewal of values attached to the product, values attached to the customer relationship and power relations). However, f…

Magnomechanics in suspended magnetic beams

2021

Cavity optomechanical systems have become a popular playground for studies of controllable nonlinear interactions between light and motion. Owing to the large speed of light, realizing cavity optomechanics in the microwave frequency range requires cavities up to several mm in size, hence making it hard to embed several of them on the same chip. An alternative scheme with much smaller footprint is provided by magnomechanics, where the electromagnetic cavity is replaced by a magnet undergoing ferromagnetic resonance, and the optomechanical coupling originates from magnetic shape anisotropy. Here, we consider the magnomechanical interaction occurring in a suspended magnetic beam -- a scheme in…

Developing a programme theory for the Systemic Practice Model in children's social care : Key informants' perspectives

2021

Vague programme descriptions are known to impede implementation and evaluation. Yet social work change programmes often fail to describe in detail how they aim to provide better outcomes for children and families. This study focused on the Systemic Practice Model (SPM), which is a Finnish adaptation of Reclaiming Social Work, a practice model developed in England. The SPM aims to deliver systemic practice in children's social care and has recently been widely disseminated across Finland. However, research has found both considerable variation in its delivery and a lack of clarity about what it is. This study, applying realist evaluation, aimed to formulate a programme theory based on the pe…

Effect of Space charge accumulation inside the thermoplastic insulation of a loaded HVDC model cable

2021

The space charge accumulation phenomenon represents one of the main degradation factors for the dielectrics employed in the field of the HVDC transmission. For this reason, the recommendation IEEE Std 1732-2017 has been proposed. In that standard, due to the importance attributed at the space charge phenomenon, the experts suggest the introduction of the space charge measurement in HVDC cables during the prequalification or type tests, by means of the PEA method. However, despite for tests in flat specimens the PEA technique is well consolidated, for cable specimens difficulties are still present. In particular, the PEA cell output signal is strongly conditioned by the arranged measurement …

Birth weight, adult weight, and cardiovascular biomarkers : Evidence from the Cardiovascular Young Finns Study

2021

This study quantifies the causal effect of birth weight on cardiovascular biomarkers in adulthood using the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study (YFS). We apply a multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) method that provides a novel approach to improve inference in causal analysis based on a mediation framework. The results show that birth weight is linked to triglyceride levels (β = −0.294; 95% CI [−0.591, 0.003]) but not to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels (β = 0.007; 95% CI [−0.168, 0.183]). The total effect of birth weight on triglyceride levels is partly offset by a mediation pathway linking birth weight to adult BMI (β = 0.111; 95% CI [−0.013, 0.234]). The nega…

Partial discharges characteristics during load transients in an HVDC model cable

2021

The occurrence of Partial Discharges (PD) in HVAC cables is widespread considered as one of the most important concerns for the stability of the insulation. To date, the role of PD in the ageing and definitive fault of HVDC cables has been poorly investigated. This is mainly due to some practical difficulties in the performing of the measurements. Compared to the PDs occurring under AC stress, the higher inception voltages and the lower repetition rates, obtainable under DC voltage, make the exclusion of the measurement noise more difficult. This paper is focused on the study of the characteristics of the PDs occurring in an artificial defect located in proximity of the outer dielectric' su…

Scleral Buckling: A Review of Clinical Aspects and Current Concepts

2021

Scleral buckling represents a valuable treatment option for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair. The surgery is based on two main principles: the closure of retinal breaks and the creation of a long-lasting chorioretinal adhesion. Buckles are placed onto the sclera with the purpose of sealing retinal breaks. Cryopexy is usually performed to ensure a long-lasting chorioretinal adhesion. Clinical outcomes of scleral buckling have been shown to be more favorable in phakic eyes with uncomplicated or medium complexity retinal detachment, yielding better anatomical and functional results compared with vitrectomy. Several complications have been described following scleral buckling surgery, s…

Rational solutions to the KdV equation depending on multi-parameters

2021

We construct multi-parametric rational solutions to the KdV equation. For this, we use solutions in terms of exponentials depending on several parameters and take a limit when one of these parameters goes to 0. Here we present degenerate rational solutions and give a result without the presence of a limit as a quotient of polynomials depending on 3N parameters. We give the explicit expressions of some of these rational solutions.

Transient frailty induced by cell division. Observation, reasons and implications

2021

We know that stress-factors, e.g. X-rays, have an effect on cells that is more lethal in rapid exponential growth than in stationary phase. It is this effect which makes radiotherapy effective in cancer treatment. This stress effect can be explained in two ways: (a) more vulnerability in the growth phase, (b) improved protection capacity and repair mechanisms in the stationary phase. Although the two explanations do not exclude each other, they are very different in the sense that (a) is a general mechanism whereas (b) is strain and stress-factor dependent. In this paper we explore major facets of (a). Firstly, we emphasize that (a) can account for known experimental stress-factor evidence.…

Multi-proxy analysis suggests Late Pleistocene affinities of human skeletal remains attributed to Balzi Rossi

2021

: In two publications from 1967 and 1971, M. Masali described human skeletal remains presumed to have been found in the Balzi Rossi caves (Ventimiglia, Italy), based on a signed note dated to 1908. Since then, the remains - dubbed "Conio's Finds" and preserved at the University of Torino - had not been further studied. We performed a multidisciplinary investigation aimed at clarifying the geographical and chronological attribution of these specimens. Collagen extraction for AMS dating was unsuccessful, but we obtained two direct dates on the best- preserved crania via 231Pa/235U direct gamma-ray spectrometry (10,500±2,000 years BP and 12,500±2,500 years BP).

A new Framework for the Spectral Information Decomposition of Multivariate Gaussian Processes

2021

: Different information-theoretic measures are available in the literature for the study of pairwise and higher-order interactions in multivariate dynamical systems. While these measures operate in the time domain, several physiological and non-physiological systems exhibit a rich oscillatory content that is typically analyzed in the frequency domain through spectral and cross-spectral approaches. For Gaussian systems, the relation between information and spectral measures has been established considering coupling and causality measures, but not for higher-order interactions. To fill this gap, in this work we introduce an information-theoretic framework in the frequency domain to quantify t…
