Single-shot ultrafast laser processing of high-aspect-ratio nanochannels using elliptical Bessel beams

2017

Ultrafast lasers have revolutionized material processing, opening a wealth of new applications in many areas of science. A recent technology that allows the cleaving of transparent materials via non-ablative processes is based on focusing and translating a high-intensity laser beam within a material to induce a well-defined internal stress plane. This then enables material separation without debris generation. Here, we use a non-diffracting beam engineered to have a transverse elliptical spatial profile to generate high aspect ratio elliptical channels in glass of dimension 350 nm x 710 nm, and subsequent cleaved surface uniformity at the sub-micron level.

Reinforced Room-Temperature Spin Filtering in Chiral Paramagnetic Metallopeptides

2020

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), whereby helical molecules polarize the spin of electrical current, is an intriguing effect with potential applications in nanospintronics. In this nascent field, the study of the CISS effect using paramagnetic chiral molecules, which could introduce another degree of freedom in controlling the spin transport, remains so far unexplored. To address this challenge, herein we propose the use of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of helical lanthanide-binding peptides. To elucidate the effect of the paramagnetic nuclei, monolayers of the peptide coordinating paramagnetic or diamagnetic ions are prepared. By means of spin-dependent electrochemistry, the CI…

Do board characteristics affect environmental performance? A study of EU firms

2019

This paper explores the relationship between board characteristics and environmental performance. We adopt a triple perspective of environmental performance, focussing on emissions (waste and CO2), resource consumption (water and energy), and the implementation of environmental initiatives. The sample comprises 644 nonfinancial European Union–based companies. The data cover the period 2002 to 2017. The results confirm that gender diversity and the existence of a corporate social responsibility committee are positively associated with the firms' environmental performance. This finding is consistent with the view that the educational background, talent, and experience of women help promote su…

Sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR): Essential topics for business education

2017

Abstract The current changes and challenges of the economic and financial environments have created a need for further development in the way higher education, organizations and management systems view the sustainable development and business education. The purpose of this paper is to examine different aspects and approaches regarding sustainability, sustainable development, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the context of business education. The research is based on a literature review, on the experience gained as a result of our participation in various projects and international activities regarding the above-mentioned concepts, and on the results of several qualitative and qu…

The Relationship between Femininity and Sustainability Reporting

2017

Most research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and stakeholder engagement with sustainable development has focused on the internal factors of corporations, leaving aside the characteristics of the institutional, cultural, and economic context of the country where corporations operate. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of femininity in the disclosure of sustainability information based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines at a developed country context. We use three measures of the CSR information disclosure by country: the GRI reports per million of inhabitants, the GRI reports application level, and the percentage of GRI reports wit…

Systems of quasilinear elliptic equations with dependence on the gradient via subsolution-supersolution method

2017

For the homogeneous Dirichlet problem involving a system of equations driven by \begin{document}$(p,q)$\end{document} -Laplacian operators and general gradient dependence we prove the existence of solutions in the ordered rectangle determined by a subsolution-supersolution. This extends the preceding results based on the method of subsolution-supersolution for systems of elliptic equations. Positive and negative solutions are obtained.

Integration of GMR sensors with different technologies

2016

Less than thirty years after the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect was described, GMR sensors are the preferred choice in many applications demanding the measurement of low magnetic fields in small volumes. This rapid deployment from theoretical basis to market and state-of-the-art applications can be explained by the combination of excellent inherent properties with the feasibility of fabrication, allowing the real integration with many other standard technologies. In this paper, we present a review focusing on how this capability of integration has allowed the improvement of the inherent capabilities and, therefore, the range of application of GMR sensors. After briefly describing the …

Conceptualization for intended action: A dynamic model

2023

Concepts are the building blocks of higher-order cognition and consciousness. Building on Conceptual Spaces Theory (CST) and proceeding from the assumption that concepts are inherently dynamic, this paper provides historical context to and significantly elaborates the previously offered Iterative Subdivision Model (ISDM) with the goal of pushing it toward empirical testability. The paper describes how agents in continuous interaction with their environment adopt an intentional orientation, estimate the utility of the concept(s) applicable to action in the current context, engage in practical action, and adopt any new concepts that emerge: a largely pre-intellectual cycle that repeats essent…

A contribution to the mathematical modeling of immune-cancer competition

2018

Abstract This paper deals with the modeling of interactions between the immune system and cancer cells, in the framework of the mathematical kinetic theory for active particles. The work deepens a previous paper of Belloquid et al. that assumes spatial homogeneity and discrete values of the activity of cancer and immune cells. A number of simulations are made with the aim to investigate how the state of the various cell populations evolves in time depending on the choice of the free parameters.
