On Utilizing Stochastic Non-linear Fractional Bin Packing to Resolve Distributed Web Crawling

2014

This paper deals with the extremely pertinent problem of web crawling, which is far from trivial considering the magnitude and all-pervasive nature of the World-Wide Web. While numerous AI tools can be used to deal with this task, in this paper we map the problem onto the combinatorially-hard stochastic non-linear fractional knapsack problem, which, in turn, is then solved using Learning Automata (LA). Such LA-based solutions have been recently shown to outperform previous state-of-the-art approaches to resource allocation in Web monitoring. However, the ever growing deployment of distributed systems raises the need for solutions that cope with a distributed setting. In this paper, we prese…

pEGFP transfection into murine skeletal muscle by electrosonoporation

2017

In this study, we aimed to determine whether the combination of electroporation (EP) and ultrasound (US) waves (sonoporation) can affect the plasmid DNA transfection to mice tibialis cranialis muscle. Multispectral imaging technique combined with fluorescence spectroscopy point measurements has been used for the transcutaneous detection of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) fluorescence, providing information on location and duration of EGFP expression. We found that electrosonoporation, commonly enhancing pDNA transfection in vitro , had no positive effect on EGFP transfection efficiency increase in vivo with respect to electroporation alone. We presume that this may be associated w…

Application of fluorescence spectroscopy and multispectral imaging for non-invasive estimation of GFP transfection efficiency

2014

Electroporation and ultrasound induced sonoporation has been showed to induce plasmid DNA transfection to the mice tibialis cranialis muscle. It offers new prospects for gene therapy and cancer treatment. However, numerous experimental data are still needed to deliver the plausible explanation of the mechanisms governing DNA electro- or sono-transfection, as well as to provide the updates on transfection protocols for transfection efficiency increase. In this study we aimed to apply non-invasive optical diagnostic methods for the real time evaluation of GFP transfection levels at the reduced costs for experimental apparatus and animal consumption. Our experimental set-up allowed monitoring …

Effect of fatigue on the intra-cycle acceleration in front crawl swimming: a time-frequency analysis.

2007

The present study analyzes the changes in acceleration produced by swimmers before and after fatiguing effort. The subjects (n=15) performed a 25-m crawl series at maximum speed without fatigue, and a second series with fatigue. The data were registered with a synchronized system that consisted of a position transducer (1 kHz) and a video photogrametry (50 Hz). The acceleration (m s−2) was obtained by the derivative analysis of the variation of the position with time. The amplitude in the time domain was calculated with the root mean square (RMS); while the peak power (PP), the peak power frequency (PPF) and the spectrum area (SA) were calculated in the frequency domain with Fourier analysi…

«Hinc Tomyris Crassum male multat»: nota a Naldo Naldi, carm. var. VI 121-138

2020

This note proposes the analysis of a short episode that can be read in the poem ‹De virtute› (carm. var. 6, 121-138) of the Florentine poet Naldo Naldi (1439-1513), relating to the figure of Marco Licinio Crasso, since Antiquity and then, in the Middle Ages and Humanism, a typical exemplum of insatiable greed and punished avarice.

Distraction of cyclists: how does it influence their risky behaviors and traffic crashes?

2018

BackgroundUndisputedly, traffic crashes constitute a public health concern whose impact and importance have been increasing during the past few decades. Specifically, road safety data have systematically shown how cyclists are highly vulnerable to suffering traffic crashes and severe injuries derived from them. Furthermore, although the empirical evidence is still very limited in this regard, in addition to other human factors involved in cycling crashes, distractions while cycling appear to be a major contributor to the road risk of cyclists.ObjectivesThe main objectives of this study were, first, to explore the prevalence and trends of cycling distractions within an international sample o…

New mobility strategies for the development of tourism in Sicily

2012

Tourism and Transport is a well established and inseparable pair. An areas can increase the tourism in potentially own economy. This requires suitable accommodation and adequate transportation system. A positive synergy effects are induced to increase of the site. Transport is an important growth area for tourism and as a result. A better functioning of transport facilitates access to sites, decreases the cost of transport and increases tourist flows. In Sicily there are a wealth of artistic, archaeological and natural sites, generating a tourist flows during the year. Despite this, the network of connections and services is precarious. Residents and visitors are inaccessible to certain geo…
