Bioencapsulation of living bacteria (Escherichia coli) with poly(silicate) after transformation with silicatein-α gene

2007

Bioencapsulation is an intriguing way to immobilize biological materials, including cells, in silica, metal-oxides or hybrid sol-gel polymers. Until now only the sol-gel precursor technology was utilized to immobilize bacteria or yeast cells in silica. With the discovery of silicatein, an enzyme from demosponges that catalyzes the formation of poly(silicate), it became possible to synthesize poly(silicate) under physiological (ambient) conditions. Here we show that Escherichia coli can be transformed with the silicatein gene, its expression level in the presence of isopropyl beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) can be efficiently intensified by co-incubation with silicic acid. This effect co…

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the renal capsule

1981

We report about an extremely rare case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the renal capsule. The tumor is composed of fibroblast-like cells arranged in a storiform pattern and histiocyte-like cells with multinucleated giant cells, both showing no iron reaction. Characteristic of the histiocytic quality of the tumor are numerous PAS-positive intracytoplasmic droplets which can be identified as erythrophagosomes only under the electron microscope. Emphasis is put on the preoperative differential diagnosis of the tumor from renal cell carcinoma as well as on its histogenesis and prognosis.

Impact of several histopathological prognosticators and local tumour extension on oncological outcome in pT3b/c N0M0 renal cell carcinoma.

2009

OBJECTIVE To investigate the prognostic relevance of different histopathological features and local tumour extension in patients with pT3b/c N0M0 renal cell carcinoma (RCC), as recently new proposals of reclassifying tumour fat invasion in pT3b/c RCC have been made but the effect of other histopathological tumour characteristics and combinations thereof with tumour invasion has yet to be determined in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1990 and 2006, 1943 patients underwent surgical treatment for renal tumours in our institution, of which 175 patients (8.7%) had pT3b/c RCC. After exclusion of 57 patients (32.6%) with lymph node and/or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis, 1…

Implantation of the modified endocapsular bending ring in pediatric cataract surgery using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent.

1999

Cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric eyes remain controversial. Using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent, we implanted a modified capsular bending ring (CBR) as well as an acrylic IOL with a sharp-optic-edge design in the capsular bag. All operated eyes demonstrated a low postoperative inflammatory reaction and a clinically well-centered IOL. The band-shaped, sharp-edged CBR facilitates the creation of a sharp, discontinuous bend in the equatorial capsule, which prevents anterior and posterior capsule opacification. Combining the viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent and the CBR enhances the safety of primary and secondary posterior chamber IOL implantation in pe…

Dimeric resorcinarene salt capsules with very tight encapsulation of anions and guest molecules

2015

Crystallization of N-cyclohexyl ammonium resorcinarene triflate from methanol results in a dimeric capsule capable of trapping two triflate anions and two methanol molecules within a 341 A3 cavity while with 1,4-dioxane as a guest it forms a new larger dimeric capsule with volume of 679 A3 encapsulating four 1,4-dioxane and four water molecules, resulting in packing coefficients of 0.75 and 0.67, respectively.

Phenotypic and genotypic evaluation of slime production by conventional and molecular microbiological techniques.

2009

Twenty-nine staphylococcal isolates from different clinical samples were tested for slime production: phenotypic characterization was carried out using Christensen test (tube test) and Congo red agar plate test (CRA plate test), while the presence and expression of icaA and icaD genes were evaluated by real-time PCR. In 79.3% of studied strains there was a concordance between slime production and presence of icaA and icaD genes, and between lack of slime production and absence of both or only one of the tested genes. In four of five strains where positive phenotype was not associated with the presence of ica genes, gene co-expression (evaluated by mRNA determination) was lacking, while in o…

Condylar position indicator and T-scan system II in clinical evaluation of temporomandibular intracapsular disease.

2012

The pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint intracapsular disease (TMJI) is multifactorial and its diagnosis is not easy. In this work authors show two types of clinical analysis: the Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan 2 system.Twenty patients (mean age of 24.5 years) with TMJI problem and 10 healthy matched subjects (mean age: 25.4 years) were selected. Analysis of TMJI was performed on each patient by means of Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan System II tests.Eight patients presented vertical symmetrical condylar distraction greater than healthy subjects (P-value0.001). T-Scan showed a difference of Percentage of Force (POF) not greater than 5%. Seven patients showed …

Statistical tools and control of internal lubricant content of inhalation grade HPMC capsules during manufacture

2016

The internal lubricant content (ILC) of inhalation grade HPMC capsules is a key factor to ensure good powder release when the patient inhales a medicine from a dry powder inhaler (DPI). Powder release from capsules has been shown to be influenced by the ILC. The characteristics used to measure this are the emitted dose, fine particle fraction and mass median aerodynamic diameter. In addition the ILC level is critical for capsule shell manufacture because it is an essential part of the process that cannot work without it. An experiment has been applied to the manufacture of inhalation capsules with the required ILC. A full factorial model was used to identify the controlling factors and from…

[N⋅⋅⋅I+⋅⋅⋅N] Halogen-Bonded Dimeric Capsules from Tetrakis(3-pyridyl)ethylene Cavitands

2016

Two [N⋅⋅⋅I+⋅⋅⋅N] halogen-bonded dimeric capsules using tetrakis(3-pyridyl)ethylene cavitands with different lower rim alkyl chains are synthesized and analyzed in solution and the gas phase. These first examples of symmetrical dimeric capsules making use of the iodonium ion (I+) as the main connecting module are characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and ion mobility-mass spectrometry (TW-IMS) experiments. The synthesis and effective halogen-bonded dimerization proceeds through analogous dimeric capsules with [N⋅⋅⋅Ag+⋅⋅⋅N] binding motifs as the intermediates as evidenced by the X-ray structures of …

Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Quadrupole Orbitrap High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry for Multi-Residue Analysis of Mycotox…

2020

Cannabidiol (CBD) food supplements made of Cannabis sativa L. extracts have quickly become popular products due to their health-promoting effects. However, potential contaminants, such as mycotoxins and pesticides, can be coextracted during the manufacturing process and placed into the final product. Accordingly, a novel methodology using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) was developed to quantify 16 mycotoxins produced by major C. sativa fungi, followed by a post-target screening of 283 pesticides based on a comprehensive spectral library. The validated procedure was applied to ten CBD-bas…
