After 3 years of collapse, foreign direct investments (FDI) have reached a minimum level of the last 9 years, in 2011, meaning 1, 94 billion Euros, below the 2003 level. In the first 10 months of 2012, foreign direct investments have reached a level of 1,27 billion Euros, surpassing the similar period last year, as the economic growth was centered around 0,5 %. Economic Freedom, Knowledge Economy and Global Competitiveness are three of the many and very different dimensions which characterize the level of a country’s performance. This paper tries to present these three important directions, the specific indicators that measure them – IEF, KEI, GCI – and the relationship between them. Also, it will try to demonstrate that countries with free economy can turn into knowledge and competitive economies. Furthermore, it will make a comparative analysis of Romania with the EU countries’ average in order to identify for Romania which pillar’s scores it has to improve.

Unshared binding sites for Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa and Cry3Ca proteins in the weevil Cylas puncticollis (Brentidae)

Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa and Cry3Ca proteins have been reported to be toxic against the African sweetpotato pest Cylas puncticollis. In the present work, the binding sites of these proteins in C. puncticollis brush border vesicles suggest the occurrence of different binding sites, but only one of them is shared. Our results suggest that pest resistance mediated by alteration of the shared Cry-receptor binding site might not render both Cry proteins ineffective.

ABSTRACT Despite the fact that around 200 cry genes from Bacillus thuringiensis have already been cloned, only a few Cry proteins are toxic towards a given pest. A crucial step in the mode of action of Cry proteins is binding to specific sites in the midgut of susceptible insects. Binding studies in insects that have developed cross-resistance discourage the combined use of Cry proteins sharing the same binding site. Complex of copper with the gonadotropin-releasing hormone, GnRH, competed more efficiently for the GnRH receptor than native GVRH, while complexes of nickel with GnRH and zinc with GnRH had slightly lower affinity. Copper ion added to the incubation mixture inhibited the buserelin binding to the receptor.
