Constructions of bilingualism in Finnish Government programmes and a newspaper discussion site debate
2014
The concept of bilingualism in Finnish political discourse is predominantly used in the meaning of official or state bilingualism, focussing on the two constitutionally defined ‘national languages’; i.e. Finnish and Swedish. Legally, both Finnish and Swedish speakers have a right for public services, such as schooling or health care, in their first language. On the other hand, several language ideological debates have taken place in recent years, challenging especially the status of Swedish in administration and education. These debates have reshaped the discourses on what counts as bilingualism. This paper analyses on one hand the historical discursive development of the “official will” pr…
Discretionary vs nondiscretionary in fiscal mechanism – non-automatic fiscal stabilisers vs automatic fiscal stabilisers
2015
The goal of the present study is to increase the intelligibility of macroeconomic phenomena triggered by governmental intervention in economy by means of fiscal policies. During cyclical movements, fiscal policy can play an important role in order to help stabilise the economy. But discretionary policy usually implies implementation lags and is not automatically reversed when economic conditions change. In contrast, automatic fiscal stabilisers (SFA) ensure a prompter, and self-correcting fiscal response. The present study aims to tackle the topic of discretionary vs nondiscretionary characteristic of fiscal stabilisers (SF). In this context, the scope of the research undertaking is to laun…
Understanding functional ability: Perspectives of nurses and older people living in long-term care
2017
The functional ability of older people has come to play a significant role in their care. Policies and public debate promote active aging and the need to maintain functioning in old age, including among older people living in long-term care. This study explores the meanings given to functional ability in the interview talk of long-term care nurses (n=24) and older people living in long-term care (n=16). The study is based on discourse analysis and positioning theory. In this study, accounts of functioning differed between nurses and older residents. For the nurses, functional ability was about the basic functions of everyday life, and they often used formal and theoretical language, whereas…

Asset Market Equilibria in Cryptocurrency Markets: Evidence from a Study of Privacy and Non-Privacy Coins
2019
This paper explores whether asset market equilibria in cryptocurrency markets exist. In doing so, it distinguishes between privacy and non-privacy coins. Most recently, privacy coins have attracted increasing attention in the public debate as non-privacy cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, do not satisfy some users’ demands for anonymity. Analyzing ten cryptocurrencies with the highest market capitalization in each sub-market in the 2016–2018 period, we find that privacy coins and non-privacy coins exhibit two distinct market equilibria. Contributing to the current debate on the market efficiency of cryptocurrency markets, our findings provide evidence of market inefficiency. Moreover, the a…
Pareri, dispute e dibattiti nel cantiere del Duomo di Milano XIV-XVI secolo
2017
The «600th anniversary of the consultation on the construction of the Cathedral of Girona» can provide a good opportunity to review the studies and documents relating to the many debates surrounding the use of stone masonry in Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) between the 14th and 15th centuries–the object of research of many scholars who have bequeathed pages of great significance for the history of architecture on the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Without aiming to make a comprehensive study, and basing our work especially on the enormous documentary compendium Annali della Fabbrica del Duomo dalle origini siano al presente. 1877-1885., we have sought to interpret the data, which l…
Submitting “Alternative Facts” to Debate: A Weberian Perspective on Post-truth Politics
2018
'Oxford Dictionaries' chose “post-truth” as the “Word of the Year 2016”, while the association of German linguists (Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache) did the same for '“postfaktische Politik'”. “Alternative facts”, launched by Kellyanne Conway concerning the attendance at Donald Trump’s inaugural, was a third variant in this cluster. In this article, I shall discuss Max Weber’s parliamentary perspective on the critique of given facts and of the powers of science in relation to the debates around post-truth politics. A critical assessment of Leo Strauss’s critique of Weber as a nihilist and relativist introduces the problematic. One aim of the article is to illustrate how even trivial sloga…

Pasquale Culotta e la tradizione del sapere/fare in Architettura
2010
«In Architettura. Il giornale della progettazione» was founded by Pasquale Culotta in Cefalù in 1979, together with a group of young architects. For several years the magazine has been a valuable tool for debate on the profession and teaching of architecture. With this publication, a sort of special issue, we intend to pay homage to Culotta. Retracing some of the most important stages of his activity, from the project for the new headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture in Palermo to the competition for the church of San Carlo Borromeo in Rome, through the memory and contribution of those who had the opportunity to work and study with him , the portrait of a professional is drawn, who ha…
