Spatial analysis of the relationship between mortality from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease and drinking water hardness

Previously published scientific papers have reported a negative correlation between drinking water hardness and cardiovascular mortality. Some ecologic and case-control studies suggest the protective effect of calcium and magnesium concentration in drinking water. The impact of solvent mixtures on neurobehavioral performance: conclusions from epidemiological data.

Abstract The review of epidemiological studies investigating the neurobehavioral effects of occupational exposure to solvent mixtures sought to contribute to the following issues: (1) Identification of affected cognitive and motor functions. (2) Identification of sensitive neuropsychological tests. (3) Analysis of exposure–effect relationships. The approach was based on the meta-analytical method of effect size estimates. Fifty-three groups from occupational studies were included in the meta-analysis. Gestational exposure to cocaine alters cocaine reward

Exposure of the developing foetus to drugs of abuse during pregnancy may lead to persistent abnormalities of brain systems involved in drug addiction. Mice prenatally exposed to cocaine (25 mg/kg), physiological saline or non-treated during the last 7 days of pregnancy were evaluated in adulthood for the rewarding properties of cocaine (3, 25 and 50 mg/kg), using the conditioned place preference procedure. Dams treated with physiological saline gained significantly less weight over the course of gestation than controls; no other differences were observed in the maternal and offspring data. Abstract 1. 1. The changes in the biochemical composition of gills, hepatopancreas and muscle after exposure to 0.25 mg Hg/l were studied in Procambarus clarkii . 2. 2. Sublethal exposure to mercury in P. clarkii resulted in significant decreases in protein concentration and caloric concentration in gills over the 96 hr period. Glycogen/lipid and glycogen/protein ratios increased after 48 and 96 hr of mercury exposure. 3. 3. Lipid and caloric concentration in the hepatopancreas were significantly lower in 96 hr mercury exposed group. 4. 4. Glycogen concentration in muscle was depleted as consequence of 96 hr mercury exposure.

Inhibition of Gill Na+,K+-ATPase Activity in the Eel,Anguilla anguilla,by Fenitrothion

European eels (Anguilla anguilla) were exposed to sublethal fenitrothion concentrations (0.02 and 0.04 mg/liter) in a continuous flow-through system for 4 days. Gill Mg2+- and Na+,K+-ATPase activities were evaluated after 2, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, 56, 72, and 96 h of pesticide exposure. Results indicated that ATPase activity in gill tissue decreased as concentration of fenitrothion increased. Pesticide induced significant inhibitory effects on the Na+, K+-ATPase activity of A. anguilla, ranging from >56% inhibition at a sublethal concentration of 0.02 ppm to >73% inhibition at a sublethal concentration of 0.04 ppm. Challenging management of gingival squamous cell carcinoma: a 10 years single-center retrospective study on Northern-Italian patients.

Background Aim of this study was to describe the outcome of patients with gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC), and to recognize aspects affecting clinical course and to consider survival rate. Material and Methods The case records of patients, over a 10-year period, were retrospectively examined. Differences in distribution of the potential risk factors by prognosis were investigated through non-parametrical tests (Wilcoxon Rank-Sum and Fisher’s Exact).
