Eagle syndrome compared with stylohyoid syndrome: complete ossification of the stylohyoid ligament and joint

2017

A 65-year-old man presented with a history of type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver. He had had no injuries to, or operations on his neck, but had had right submandibular and retroauricular pain for years. Computed tomography with 3-dimensional reconstruction (Figs. 1 and 2) showed elongation of both styloid processes associated with pseudoarticulation of the hyoid bone on the right side. This confirmed the complete ossification of the stylohyoid ligament, but the patient did not want an operation to resolve it. Analysis of Contact Traces of Cannabis by In-Tube Solid-Phase Microextraction Coupled to Nanoliquid Chromatography

2018

Because of its inherent qualities, in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled on-line to nanoliquid chromatography (nanoLC) can be a very powerful tool to address the new challenges of analytical laboratories such as the analysis of traces of complex samples. This is the case of the detection of contact traces of drugs, especially cannabis. The main difficulties encountered in the analysis of traces of cannabis plants on surfaces are the low amount of sample available (typically &lt

Deglycosylated bleomycin triggers apoptosis in laryngeal carcinoma cells in a caspase and reactive oxygen species independent manner

2008

Background:  Bleomycin-A2, a member of a family of glycopeptide antibiotics, has potent antitumor activity against a range of lymphomas, head and neck cancer and germ cell tumors. However, little is known about the biologic activity of the carbohydrate moiety in Bleomycin-A2-induced cytotoxicity. Methods:  We compared the capacity of Bleomycin-A2 and its deglycosylated form (deglycoBleomycin-A2) to induce cell death. Apoptosis was analyzed by cell nuclear staining with Hoechst 33342 dye and DNA fragmentation. The signal transduction pathway was measured through Western blotting and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Results:  When tested on HEp-2 laryngeal carcinoma cells, Bleomyc…

Peroxisomes and Hepatotoxicity

1995

Peroxisomes are ubiquitous organelles of eukaryotic cells and are present in significant amounts in hepatic liver cells. Peroxisomal enzymes contribute to several metabolic pathways including fatty acid, purine and amino acid catabolism or bile acid synthesis. The peroxisomal oxidative reactions produce hydrogen peroxide, mostly degraded by catalase which prevents oxidative stress. Moreover, peroxisomes are involved in arylderivative drug detoxification through its epoxide hydrolase activity.
