For phospholipids at the air/water interface we demonstrate that molecular chirality in some, but not in all, cases influences the domain shapes. In other cases chirality in the head group region can cause a chiral structure considering the tail arrangement. This indicates head group ordering. Minute changes of the molecular structure may change domain morphology from circular to dendritic. This can be related to slight changes of the lattice structure. In case of a dendritic domain the chains are more tilted, the deviation from hexagonal symmetry is more pronounced, and hence the lattice anisotropy is larger. Electronic and Steric Effects: How Do They Work in Ionic Liquids? The Case of Benzoic Acid Dissociation

The need to have a measure of the strength of some substituted benzoic acids in ionic liquid solution led us to use the protonation equilibrium of sodium p-nitrophenolate as a probe reaction, which was studied by means of spectrophotometric titration at 298 K. In order to evaluate the importance of electronic effect of the substituents present on the aromatic ring, both electron-withdrawing and -donor substituents were taken into account. Oxidative chalcogenation reaction using molybdenum(V) reagents provides fast access to a wide range of nonsymmetric aryl sulfides and selenides. The established protocol is tolerated by a variety of labile functions, protecting groups, and aromatic heterocycles. In particular, when labile moieties are present, the use of molybdenum(V) reagents provides superior yields compared to other oxidants.

Osteosarcomas and Ewing’s sarcoma (EWS) are aggressive malignant bone tumors. In both cases, prognostic markers are lacking. Presently, only clinical features are widely accepted as prognostic indicators. In this study we assessed the prognostic value of CCN3 (Nov), a matricellular protein that belong to the CCN family of regulatory proteins, whose members were shown to play crucial roles in bone formation. Determination of basic strenght of aliphatic amines through ion pair formation in some ionic liquid solutions

To have an evaluation of the basic strength of aliphatic amines in ionic liquid solution, the stability constants relevant to the formation of amine/p-nitrophenol ion pairs were determined in different ionic liquids at 298 K. In particular, aliphatic (pyrrolidinium) and aromatic (imidazolium) ionic liquids were used. Substratum recognition as settlement cue for larvae of Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859)

Despite the ecological relevance of the vermetid bioconstructions in the Mediterranean, little is known about the early life stage of Dendropoma cristatum. This study describes the preference for settlement substrata from D. cristatumlarvae. A field experiment was carried out to test the suitability of crustose coralline algae (CCA), D. cristatumadults and two inorganic substrata as settlement surfaces. The number of settling larvae varied among the four treatments with higher settlement success on organic surfaces.
