The structural characterisation of a synthetic peptide reproducing the sequence 1–30 of Par j 1.0101, a major allergenic protein present in the pollen of Parietaria judaica, by combined use of chemical and enzymatic cleavage, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), is described. Evaluation of enniatins A, A1, B, B1 and beauvericin in Portuguese cereal-based foods.

Sixty-one samples of Portuguese cereal-based foods were analysed for the occurrence of emerging mycotoxins called enniatins (A, A1, B and B1) and beauvericin. Samples were extracted with a mixture of acetonitrile/water (85/15, v/v) using an Ultra-Turrax homogeniser, and mycotoxins were detected with liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer. This method was validated and adequate values of recovery (70-103%) and relative standard deviation (15%) were obtained. Signal suppression/enhancement was studied and matrix-matched calibration used to minimise this effect, but no additional clean-up step was necessary. Abstract The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of guarana seed extracts (GSE) added to pork patties were evaluated for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C. International audience; Ultrasound pre-treatment (UAE) was applied to assist the extraction of valuable compounds (polyphenols (especially anthocyanins), and proteins) from purple sweet potato (PSP). Pyrocoll, an Antibiotic, Antiparasitic and Antitumor Compound Produced by a Novel Alkaliphilic Streptomyces Strain

A new secondary metabolite was detected in the culture extract of Streptomyces sp. AK 409 by HPLC-diode-array screening. The metabolite was identified as pyrocoll, which is known to be a constituent of cigarette smoke. Pyrocoll is known as a synthetic compound, but until now had not been isolated as a natural product from a microorganism. The compound showed biological activity against various Arthrobacter strains, filamentous fungi, several pathogenic protozoa, and some human tumor cell lines.

Novel Acylated Triterpene Glycosides from Muraltia heisteria

Four new acylated triterpene glycosides (1-4) have been isolated as two inseparable mixtures of the trans- and cis-3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoyl derivatives (1,2 and 3,4) from the roots of Muraltia heisteria. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by various 1D and 2D NMR techniques, including (1)H and (13)C, COSY, NOESY, HSQC, TOCSY, and HMBC experiments and FABMS. Compounds 3 and 4 were shown to be cytotoxic in a human colon cancer cell line but did not show any ability to potentiate in vitro cisplatin cytotoxicity.

1. Frogs injected with phenol excrete 67–95% of dose in 15h; 32–87% of dose are metabolites.2. Metabolites identified were phenyl sulphate (15–44% of dose), phenyl glucuronide (10–25% of dose), catechol sulphate (up to 7% of dose), quinol sulphate (1–25% of dose), resorcinol and catechol (traces).
