Proliferative verrucous vs conventional leukoplakia: no significantly increased risk of HPV infection

2004

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a very aggressive form of oral leukoplakia (OL) with high morbidity and mortality rates, hypothesised to be linked to HPV infection. This study aimed to determine the presence of HPV DNA in PVL in comparison with OL, and in relation to social-demographical variables (age, gender, smoking and drinking habits) in an Italian multi-centric hospital-based study. The study group consisted of 58 cases of PVL and 90 cases of OL as controls (47 homogeneous (H) and 43 non-homogeneous (non-H) form), both recruited from four Italian cohorts. HPV DNA was identified in exfoliated mucosal cells by nested PCR (nPCR) with MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+ primer pairs and …

Neural correlates of antinociception in borderline personality disorder.

2006

Context A characteristic feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is self-injurious behavior in conjunction with stress-induced reduction of pain perception. Reduced pain sensitivity has been experimentally confirmed in patients with BPD, but the neural correlates of antinociceptive mechanisms in BPD are unknown. We predicted that heat stimuli in patients with BPD would activate brain areas concerned with cognitive and emotional evaluation of pain. Objective To assess the psychophysical properties and neural correlates of altered pain processing in patients with BPD. Design Case-control study. Setting A university hospital. Participants Twelve women with BPD and self-injurious behav…

Uncommon case of symmetrical fibrous hyperplasia of the hard palate.

2010

The fibrous hyperplasia of the palate (fibroma) is a benign tumor which has its origin in the soft tissue and whose frequency is estimated to be 1.2% on adult subjects. Rarely the size exceeds the cm, but in these cases a complaint of increasing difficulty of mastication and swallowing appears. We describe the case of a young white woman affected with two peculiar symmetric lesions of the secondary hard palate, that could be the consequence of an abnormal answer to a chronic inflammatory stimulation.

Solid variant of mammary "adenoid cystic carcinoma with basaloid features" merging with "small cell carcinoma"

2005

We describe a rare case of a solid variant of a mammary adenoid cystic carcinoma with basaloid features (sbACC) and its coexistence with a "small cell" carcinoma (SCC), identified and confirmed by histological and immunohistochemical observations: the absence of glandular structures and PAS-positive globules, positivity for neuroendocrine markers (NSE, synaptophysin and chromogranin), and negativity for 34betaE12 and SMA actin were the aspects suggesting the presence of SCC. Furthermore, positivity for CD10 was found both in sbA CC and in SCC, supporting the hypothesis that the two components share the same histogenetic myoepithelial origin and represent an example of dedifferentiation alon…

Whooping cough, twenty years from acellular vaccines introduction

2015

Clinical pertussis resulting from infection with B. pertussis is a significant medical and public health problem, despite the huge success of vaccination that has greatly reduced its incidence. The whole cell vaccine had an undeniable success over the last 50 years, but its acceptance was strongly inhibited by fear, only partially justified, of severe side effects, but also, in the Western world, by the difficulty to enter in combination with other vaccines: today multi-vaccine formulations are essential to maintain a high vaccination coverage. The advent of acellular vaccines was greeted with enthusiasm by the public health world: in the Nineties, several controlled vaccine trials were car…

Altered Food Behavior and Cancer: A Systematic Review of the Literature

2022

There is evidence of an association between cancer and certain types of altered eating behaviors, including orthorexia, food cravings, and food addiction. Given the growing interest in the topic throughout the scientific community we conducted a systematic review to summarize current evidence on the development of altered food behavior, including food addiction and cancer. The Cochrane Collaboration and the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were followed to perform this systematic review. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was used to report the process and results. The structured literature search was co…

Volatile organic compounds fingerprint of Alzheimer’s disease.

2015

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a profoundly life changing condition and once diagnosis occurs, this is typically at a relatively late stage into the disease process. Therefore, a shift to earlier diagnosis, which means several decades before the onset of the typical manifestation of the disease, will be an important step forward for the patient. A promising diagnostic and screening tool to answer this purpose is represented by breath and exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis. In fact, human exhaled breath contains several thousand of VOCs that vary in abundance and number in correlation with the physiological status. The exhaled VOCs reflect the metabolism, including the neuronal …

Exhaled nitric oxide is associated with cyclic changes in sexual hormones

2013

Abstract Background We hypothesized that changes in the levels of sexual hormones during the menstrual cycle influence the concentration of nitric oxide in the exhaled air (FeNO) and alveolar exhaled nitric oxide (CANO). Methods Twelve healthy, non allergic women in their reproductive age (age range 25–37 years) were recruited. Subjects were studied, on alternate days, over the course of their menstrual cycle. At each visit, measurements of FeNO and CANO were performed. Progesterone and 17-β-estradiol concentrations were measured in salivary samples. Results Eight subjects completed the study. The levels of FeNO and CANO were 13 ± 4.7 pbb and 3.5 ± 1.9 pbb, respectively (mean ± SD). The mea…

Long-term evaluation of quality of life and gastrointestinal well-being after segmental colo-rectal resection for deep infiltrating endometriosis (EN…

2019

Purposes: The primary objective is to assess the long-term quality of life (QoL) and gastrointestinal well-being in patients with endometriosis (DIE) who underwent segmental resection (SR), through specific questionnaires focused on endometriosis and specific gastrointestinal evaluation. The secondary objectives are represented by the evaluation of peri-operative and post-operative outcomes of the procedure. Methods: This observational cohort study ENDO-RESECT (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03824054) reports all clinical data about women who underwent SR for DIE between October 2005 and November 2017. In the part of the study dedicated to the QoL assessment, the questionnaires adopted were the …
