Absolute Humidity Influences the Seasonal Persistence and Infectivity of Human Norovirus

2014

ABSTRACT Norovirus (NoV) is one of the main causative agents of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. In temperate climates, outbreaks peak during the winter season. The mechanism by which climatic factors influence the occurrence of NoV outbreaks is unknown. We hypothesized that humidity is linked to NoV seasonality. Human NoV is not cultivatable, so we used cultivatable murine norovirus (MNV) as a surrogate to study its persistence when exposed to various levels of relative humidity (RH) from low (10% RH) to saturated (100% RH) conditions at 9 and 25°C. In addition, we conducted similar experiments with virus-like particles (VLPs) from the predominant GII-4 norovirus and studied changes in bin…

Prediction of conidial germination of Penicillium chrysogenum as influenced by temperature, water activity and pH.

2001

M. SAUTOUR, A. ROUGET, P. DANTIGNY, C. DIVIES AND M. BENSOUSSAN. 2001 Aims: Conidial germination of Penicillium chrysogenum was carried out under operating conditions compatible with a pastries manufacturing process. Methods and Results: A range, limited by two experimental values, was defined for each environmental factor tested: temperature (15 or 25°C), water activity (0·75 or 0·85) and pH (3·5 or 5·5). A closed device was made, which maintained an equilibrium between water activity of the culture medium and atmospheric relative humidity during 25 days, to follow spore germination. The combined effects of temperature, water activity and pH on spore germination were studied by applying fa…

Water vapour permeability, thermal and wetting properties of whey protein isolate based edible films

2010

Abstract This study deals with the effect of whey protein isolate (WPI) and glycerol (GLY) used as a plasticizer on some physical properties of cast whey protein isolate (WPI) films. Films were prepared from heated (80 °C for 30 min) aqueous solutions of WPI at 7, 8, 9 and 10% (w/w), GLY (40%, w/w, of WPI) and WPI at 8% (w/w), GLY (30, 40, and 60%, w/w, of WPI). For all types of films, water vapour permeability for four relative humidity differentials (30–100%, 30–84%, 30–75%, and 30–53%), surface and thermal properties were measured. Varying the proportion of WPI and GLY in edible films had some effect on water vapour permeability, wetting and thermal properties of WPI films. A cumulative …

Hydration and dehydration kinetics of xylazine hydrochloride

2009

From the experiments where mixture of xylazine hydrochloride hydrate H and anhydrous X were held at constant conditions, the stable form of xylazine hydrochloride can be found out. To determine equilibrium relative humidity, the unstable form of xylazine hydrochloride was inserted in thermostated humidity chamber and its weight was recorded by weighing the sample outside the chamber. The kinetic model and the rate constant for each condition were determined. The rate constants give information regarding the speed of the process at every experimentally used relative humidity. Thus using the data in coordinates k – p for each temperature it is possible to determine the water vapor pressure of…

A case study on the formation and evolution of ice supersaturation in the vicinity of a warm conveyor belt\'s outflow region

2005

A case study is presented on the formation and evolution of an ice-supersaturated region (ISSR) that was detected by a radiosonde in NE Germany at 06:00 UTC 29 November 2000. The ISSR was situated in the vicinity of the outflow region of a warm conveyor belt associated with an intense event of cyclogenesis in the eastern North Atlantic. Using ECMWF analyses and trajectory calculations it is determined when the air parcels became supersaturated and later subsaturated again. In the case considered, the state of air parcel supersaturation can last for longer than 24h. The ISSR was unusually thick: while the mean vertical extension of ISSRs in NE Germany is about 500m, the one investigated here…

The subnivium, a haven for

2019

Parasite nematodes of the genus Trichinella are transmitted from one host to another through the ingestion of larvae present in striated muscles. The longer the survival of muscle larvae in host carcasses, the higher the probability of being ingested by a scavenging host. Thereby, these nematodes developed an anaerobic metabolism favouring their survival in decaying tissues. In addition, muscle larvae of three taxa, namely Trichinella nativa, Trichinella britovi and Trichinella T6, can survive freezing for several months to several years depending on the taxon. The aim of the present work was to investigate the survival time of T. britovi larvae in naturally infected host carcasses preserve…

Boosting Long-Term Stability of Pure Formamidinium Perovskite Solar Cells by Ambient Air Additive Assisted Fabrication

2021

Due to the high industrial interest for perovskite-based photovoltaic devices, there is an urgent need to fabricate them under ambient atmosphere, not limited to low relative humidity (RH) conditions. The formamidinium lead iodide (FAPI) perovskite α-black phase is not stable at room temperature and is challenging to stabilize in an ambient environment. In this work, we show that pure FAPI perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have a dramatic increase of device long-term stability when prepared under ambient air compared to FAPI PSCs made under nitrogen, both fabricated with N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The T80 parameter, the time in which the efficiency drops to 80% of the initial value, increases f…

An Original Approach to Active Climate Control Based on Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) as Set Point in a Middle-Age Building in Palermo, Italy

2019

In the frame of a more sustainable approach to climate control, a long term strategy has been developed and is under advanced phase of implementation by technical staff of the University of Palermo in an important building, Palazzo Steri, owned by the University. The monumental room under climate control, the Sala dei Baroni (also known as Sala Magna), has a precious wooden ceiling where the previously loadbearing elements are covered with wooden painted panels. Many of them, painted in the fourteenth c, underwent important restorations in the past due to climate related damage (cracks, warpings, paint layer delamination) and biological infestations. The room is currently undergoing an impo…

The effectiveness of various types of ventilation on air quality in multi-family buildings

2017

The Swelling Behavior of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers in Air of Different Relative Humidity and in Water

2002

The swelling properties of physisorbed polyelectrolyte multilayer self-assemblies with alternating polyion charge in humid air and in aqueous environment were investigated via X-ray and neutron reflectometry as well as optically, using surface plasmon spectroscopy. The sorption behavior was similar to that found for neutral polymers and was related to an internal screening of the charges of the adjacent layers owing to the high entanglement of the polyelectrolyte chains and the resulting low mobility of the polymer segments. The screening was found to be incomplete only in the top layer, resulting in a net charged surface.
