Antigüedad clásica y cultura nobiliaria en la España de finales del siglo XVIII. Autores y ediciones greco-romanas en la biblioteca de José Alvarez d…
2019
This article analyzes the reception of the classical world in the Spanish nobiliary culture at the end of the 18th century. Our objective is materialized through the study of the Greco-Roman books present in the unpublished catalog of the library of José Álvarez de Toledo, 11th Marqués de villafranca. From the examination of the authors and the different editions conserved by the aristocrat, the work tries to examine the influence of the classical world and its actuality in the development of the most advanced nobiliary culture of eighteenth- century Spain.
2016
[EN]: This study analyzes the development of Spanish-Brazilian collaborative scientific production in the field of medical research between 2002 and 2011, identifying the most productive institutions, the proportion of researchers from each country and bi-lateral collaborative networks. Data were gathered from the Scopus database, which offers broad, international coverage of multidisciplinary research. A study sample of 1,121 original scientific articles signed by 13,906 researchers were retrieved, on the basis of which the annual growth rate of Spanish-Brazilian medical research was calculated. A remarkably high degree of internationalization was found, with 121 countries participating in…
Data Sources and Models
2017
Biological networks rely on the storage and retrieval of data associated to the physical interactions and/or functional relationships among different actors. In particular, the attention may be on the interactions among cellular components, such as proteins, genes, RNA, or for example on phenotype–genotype associations. Data from which biological networks are built are usually stored in public databases, and we provide here a brief summary of the main types of both data and associations, publicly available. Moreover, we also explain how it is possible to construct suitable network models from these associations, focusing on protein–protein interaction networks, gene–disease networks and net…
Artificial chromosomes for antibiotic-producing actinomycetes.
2000
Bacteria belonging to the order Actinomycetales produce most microbial metabolites thus far described, several of which have found applications in medicine and agriculture. However, most strains were discovered by their ability to produce a given molecule and are, therefore, poorly characterized physiologically and genetically. Thus, methodologies for genetic manipulation of actinomycetes are not available and efficient tools have been developed for just a few strains. This constitutes a serious limitation to applying molecular genetics approaches to strain development and structural manipulation of microbial metabolites. To overcome this hurdle, we have developed bacterial artificial chrom…
The rise of the middle author: Investigating collaboration and division of labor in biomedical research using partial alphabetical authorship
2017
Contemporary biomedical research is performed by increasingly large teams. Consequently, an increasingly large number of individuals are being listed as authors in the bylines, which complicates the proper attribution of credit and responsibility to individual authors. Typically, more importance is given to the first and last authors, while it is assumed that the others (the middle authors) have made smaller contributions. However, this may not properly reflect the actual division of labor because some authors other than the first and last may have made major contributions. In practice, research teams may differentiate the main contributors from the rest by using partial alphabetical author…
Blended library and it's new role in academic work
2014
Presentation from the workshop "Informational services for research process" (14.-16.04.2014., Riga).
Medical management of Crohn's disease
2011
The medical approach to Crohn's disease has been modified in recent years thanks to the introduction of new therapies, like biologics. Also, well-designed studies and systematic reviews have allowed better evaluation of the role of old drugs like steroids and immunosuppressors. This review aims to evaluate the recent evidence on the medical approach to Crohn's disease in the different settings of the disease.Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses were included in the review. The research on all the studies discussed was based on the Cochrane Library, Medline and Embase, using the following medical subject headings: Crohn's disease, clinical trial, therapy, 5-aminosalicylic acid, ste…
Traditional Enterprise Business Intelligence Software Compared to Software as a Service Business Intelligence
2016
IntroductionBusiness Intelligence is a broad field of study. The major thrust of business intelligence theory analyzes certain factors to make highquality decisions. These factors include customers, competitors, business partners, economic environment and internal operations. Business Intelligence has the power to change the way people work, so that enterprises can compete more effectively and efficiently.A successful business intelligence solutions and successful implementation holds the key to the technological innovations together with the people, processes and culture of an organization to achieve a competitive and profitable BI strategy.Business Intelligence (BI) is the process of acqu…
MILES extended: Stellar population synthesis models from the optical to the infrared
2016
We present the first single-burst stellar population models which covers the optical and the infrared wavelength range between 3500 and 50000 Angstrom and which are exclusively based on empirical stellar spectra. To obtain these joint models, we combined the extended MILES models in the optical with our new infrared models that are based on the IRTF (Infrared Telescope Facility) library. The latter are available only for a limited range in terms of both age and metallicity. Our combined single-burst stellar population models were calculated for ages larger than 1 Gyr, for metallicities between [Fe/H] = -0.40 and 0.26, for initial mass functions of various types and slopes, and on the basis …
