Optical, structural, and morphological characterisation of epitaxial ZnO films grown by pulsed-laser deposition

We report on ZnO epitaxial growth by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) on different substrates, such as quartz, sapphire, and GaN template. Approximately 1 mu m-thick films were grown under different substrate temperatures and background oxygen conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated preferential growth along the c-axis direction with a full-width at half maximum(FWHM) of the rocking curve as narrow as 230 arcs in the case of the GaN template. Low-temperature photoluminescence showed A-excitonic emission near 3.36 eV and a FWHM of (DXA)-X-0 emission as small as 2.89 meV at 9 K. The phenomena occurring between the electrodes in electric discharge machining when manufacturing features on the micro-metre scale (µ-EDM) is not fully understood. Poor quantitative knowledge of the sources of variability affecting this process hinders the identification of its natural tolerance limits. Focusing of surface-acoustic-wave fields on (100) GaAs surfaces

Focused surface-acoustic waves (SAWs) provide a way to reach intense acoustic fields for electro- and optoacoustic applications on semiconductors. We have investigated the focusing of SAWs by interdigital transducers (IDTs) deposited on (100)-oriented GaAs substrates. The focusing IDTs have curved fingers designed to account for the acoustic anisotropy of the substrate. Different factors that affect focusing, such as the aperture angle and the configuration of the IDT fingers, were systematically addressed. A novel heuristics-based energy management system for a multi-carrier hub enriched with solid hydrogen storage

In this paper, an efficient optimization algorithm for the energy management of a grid-connected energy hub plant is proposed. The Simulated Annealing algorithm is adopted for the solution of the energy management problem aiming at the profit maximization for the owner of the energy hub plant. The use of a heuristic algorithm was required by the non-linearity of the efficiencies of each component in the energy transformation stages. The proposed heuristics is applied to a large energy hub, corresponding to the simulation of the test-bed that is being designed and developed inside the ongoing INGRID European research project.

Signal Restoration via a Splitting Approach

International audience; In the present study, a novel signal restoration method from noisy data samples is presented and is termed as "signal split (SSplit)" approach. The new method utilizes Stein unbiased risk estimate estimator to split the signal, the Lipschitz exponents to identify noise elements and a heuristic approach for the signal reconstruction. However, unlike many noise removal techniques, the present method works only in the non-orthogonal domain. Conformational behaviour of 2,2?-bipyrrole

The rotational potential around the interannular bond in 2,2′-bipyrrole has been calculated making use of standard minimal STO-3G and split valence 4-31G basis sets. Geometrical optimization concerning the most significant interannular internal parameters has been performed with both basis sets. The trans conformer is predicted to be more stable than the cis. The minimal basis set predicts the existence of a cisoid-gauche minimum which after limited optimization becomes very shallow and it seems to be an artifact of the rigid rotor approximation. A thermodynamic approach to nonlocal plasticity and related variational principles

Elastic-plastic rate-independent materials with isotropic hardening/softening of nonlocal nature are considered in the context of small displacements and strains. A suitable thermodynamic framework is envisaged as a basis of a nonlocal associative plasticity theory in which the plastic yielding laws comply with a (nonlocal) maximum intrinsic dissipation theorem.
