Diversity in Coherence : Strengths and Opportunities of Three Programs

2017

Author's accepted version (post-print). Although teacher educators may perceive their program and courses to be coherent, the question remains to what extent student teachers also are able to perceive the linkages within their programs. Coherence within teacher education programs is important for teacher candidates to build understanding of teaching. Our study draws upon survey data from 269 teacher candidates, in three different teacher education programs, located in three different countries (Norway, Finland, United States [California]) and compares these candidates’ perceptions of the coherence of their teacher education programs. Candidates from a program that has explicitly been workin…

Effects of the Best Possible Self intervention: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

The Best Possible Self (BPS) exercise promotes a positive view of oneself in the best possible future, after working hard towards it. Since the first work that attempted to examine the benefits of this intervention in 2001, studies on the BPS have grown exponentially and, currently, this is one of the most widely used Positive Psychology Interventions. However, little is yet known about its overall effectiveness in increasing wellbeing outcomes. Thus, the aim of this meta-analysis is to shed light on this question. A systematic literature search was conducted, and 29 studies (in 26 articles) met the inclusion criteria of empirically testing the intervention and comparing it to a control con…

The Hydrothermal System of Solfatara Crater (Campi Flegrei, Italy) Inferred From Machine Learning Algorithms

2019

Two machine learning algorithms were applied to three multivariate datasets acquired at Solfatara volcano. Our aim was to find an unbiased and coherent synthesis among the large amount of data acquired within the crater and along two orthogonal vertical NNE- and WNW-trending cross-sections. The first algorithm includes a new approach for a soft K-means clustering based on the use of the silhouette index to control the color palette of the clusters. The second algorithm which uses the self-organizing maps incorporates an alternative method for choosing the number of nodes of the neural network which aims to avoid the need for downstream clustering of the results of the classification. Both m…

Against the flow in data collection: How data triangulation combined with a ‘slow’ interview technique enriches data

2017

Capturing the voices of the ‘disadvantaged’ in society may often be difficult to achieve. In this article, we argue that the combination of data triangulation and a ‘slow’ interview technique may be a good method when the target group is vulnerable people who may find the interview challenging. Data triangulation can reveal a social phenomenon’s complexity by providing a fuller picture, while in-depth interviews and a ‘slow’ interview technique can enhance data quality. We present an alternative to what we perceive as being dominant and tacit support for use of voice recordings in interview-based studies, thus our research approach goes against the current flow in the research community. I…

Semi-supervised deep learning-driven anomaly detection schemes for cyber-attack detection in smart grids

2022

Modern power systems are continuously exposed to malicious cyber-attacks. Analyzing industrial control system (ICS) traffic data plays a central role in detecting and defending against cyber-attacks. Detection approaches based on system modeling require effectively modeling the complex behavior of the critical infrastructures, which remains a challenge, especially for large-scale systems. Alternatively, data-driven approaches which rely on data collected from the inspected system have become appealing due to the availability of big data that supports machine learning methods to achieve outstanding performance. This chapter presents an enhanced cyber-attack detection strategy using unlabeled…

Contribution of recently measured nuclear data to reactor antineutrino energy spectra predictions

2013

This paper attempts to summarize the actual problematic of reactor antineutrino energy spectra in the frame of fundamental and applied neutrino physics. Nuclear physics is an important ingredient of reactor antineutrino experiments. These experiments are motivated by neutrino oscillations, i.e. the measure of the θ 13 mixing angle. In 2011, after a new computation of the reactor antineutrino energy spectra, based on the conversion of integral data of the beta spectra from 235 U, and 239;241 Pu, a deficit of reactor antineutrinos measured by short baseline experiments was pointed out. This is called the “reactor anomaly”, a new puzzle in the neutrino physics area. Since then, numerous new ex…

A class of quasi-Newton generalized Steffensen methods on Banach spaces

2002

AbstractWe consider a class of generalized Steffensen iterations procedure for solving nonlinear equations on Banach spaces without any derivative. We establish the convergence under the Kantarovich–Ostrowski's conditions. The majorizing sequence will be a Newton's type sequence, thus the convergence can have better properties. Finally, a numerical comparation with the classical methods is presented.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation and neuroplasticity

1998

We review past results and present novel data to illustrate different ways in which TMS can be used to study neural plasticity. Procedural learning during the serial reaction time task (SRTT) is used as a model of neural plasticity to illustrate the applications of TMS. These different applications of TMS represent principles of use that we believe are applicable to studies of cognitive neuroscience in general and exemplify the great potential of TMS in the study of brain and behavior. We review the use of TMS for (1) cortical output mapping using focal, single-pulse TMS; (2) identification of the mechanisms underlying neuroplasticity using paired-pulse TMS techniques; (3) enhancement of th…
