Using the hierarchical modeling approach to derive spatial distribution of precipitation and temperature datasets. A case study for the area of Sicil…
2013
The interest for spatial interpolating climatic variables available by means of point measurements, as precipitation and temperature, arises from different needs, ranging from their usage for hydrological models to the reconstruction of climatic atlas of spatially distributed data. In some areas the spatial distribution of these variables can be related to the extremely variable morphology of the area. While simple deterministic interpolation methods usually produce just the spatial distribution of the variable of interest, implicitly relying on the spatial autocorrelation and manually tuning a few parameters, more complex statistical models, are able to derive the uncertainty associated wi…
Business models, small firms, and performance in knowledge-intensive based services. A study in the private health sector
2020
During the last years, and due to social and economic changes, the demand for private health services (PHS) is growing. A more significant number of companies appeared under different business model formulas. Besides the traditionally independent professionals, other types of entrepreneurs appeared under associated business. As a result of these changes, there are differences in how these services are provided and their performance. OBJECTIVES: This work is proposed to study the business model effect on small private health service companies' activity and analyze institutions’ and intellectual capital's role in their performance. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative-quantitative mixed method was desi…
Modelling Environmental Problem-Solving Through STEAM Activities : 4Dframe's Warka Water Workshop
2016
In this paper the Korean 4Dframe educational modelling kit’s rich capacities are presented within a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education workshop. The workshop is an adaptation of the Warka Water social design project, launched by the architect Arturo Vittori in response to Ethiopia’s diminished sources of drinking water. Participants of the workshop will study the geometry of the Warka Water tower and understand its water harvesting technique, which is based on collecting water from the air. peerReviewed

Manufacturing export performance and public capital: an analysis by country technology position
2021
The objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between public capital and manufacturing export performance. It also aims at investigating whether this relationship depends on the proximity of a country's technology frontier. To achieve this, we adopted a methodology that estimates the elasticities of public capital as a non-rival factor in a model that considers factor intensity as a mechanism of industrial development. We use an interaction model with panel data from 1999 to 2014 across 35 advanced and less advanced countries. Our results show that in countries far from the technology frontier, public capital accumulation is an element of industrial development as opposed to co…
Analysis of the determinants of entrepreneurial intention: the case of Burkina Faso
2018
International audience; In this study, we propose to analyze students' entrepreneurial intention, drawing on Lazear's (2004) self-selection model. This model captures the role of "human capital" in employment assignment and emphasizes the importance of the variety of skills in the individual's entrepreneurial orientation. For this purpose, we have a database collected in 2017 from over 1000 students at Ouaga I and Ouaga II universities in Burkina Faso. The results of estimates obtained using the quantile regression method show a positive and significant effect of the diversity of skills on the intention score, mainly at the median level. Even if the effect is not strong, this result support…
Superradiant Quantum Phase Transition for an Exactly Solvable Two-Qubit Spin-Boson Model
2023
A spin-boson-like model with two interacting qubits is analysed. The model turns out to be exactly solvable since it is characterized by the exchange symmetry between the two spins. The explicit expressions of eigenstates and eigenenergies make it possible to analytically unveil the occurrence of first-order quantum phase transitions. The latter are physically relevant since they are characterized by abrupt changes in the two-spin subsystem concurrence, in the net spin magnetization and in the mean photon number.
Development of silent reading fluency and reading comprehension across grades 1 to 9 : unidirectional or bidirectional effects between the two skills?
2022
Purpose This study examines the developmental interplay between silent reading fluency and reading comprehension from Grade 1 to Grade 9 (age 7 to 15) in a large Finnish sample (N = 2,518). Of particular interest was whether the associations are bidirectional or unidirectional. Methods Children’s silent reading fluency and reading comprehension skills were assessed using group-administered tests, at seven time points, in Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9. A random intercept cross-lagged panel model with latent factors was used to identify between- and within-person associations between silent reading fluency and reading comprehension. The use of latent factors allowed for the controlling of me…
