Insect lineages feeding on nutritionally restricted diets such as phloem sap, xylem sap, or blood, were able to diversify by acquiring bacterial species that complement lacking nutrients. These bacteria, considered obligate/primary endosymbionts, share a long evolutionary history with their hosts. In some cases, however, these endosymbionts are not able to fulfill all of their host's nutritional requirements, driving the acquisition of additional symbiotic species. This article provides an analytical review of recent experimental research on the phonetic symbolism of tastes and aromas, i.e. the tendency of the general population to associate certain phono-articulatory properties of the sounds of language with certain gustatory and olfactory properties of food. It then presents the very first results of a series of original experiments carried out by the authors on the phonetic symbolism of wine tastes.

Eye diseases are the second most prevalent pathologies after the age of 65 years. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in western countries. The number of people suffering from ocular pathologies is expected to increase sharply in the near future, becoming a socio-economic burden. Recent data indicate that lipid nutrients may represent new tools in the prevention of eye diseases, and especially AMD.

Multisensory perception of dietary faty-acids in Drosophila.

International audience; Fatty-acids (FAs) are crucial for animal survival and reproduction. However, our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the perception and preference of dietary FA is limited, particularly in invertebrates. We obtained behavioral data with wild-type Drosophila melanogaster larvae and adults showing a clear preference to some of the FAs tested (C14:0, C16:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, C18:3). These data, based on tests involving both individuals and groups, showed that larvae prefer desaturated FAs whereas adults prefer saturated FAs. In vivo consequences of cholesterol-24s-hydroxylase (CYP46A1) inhibition by voriconazole on cholesterol homeostasis and function in the rat retina

Cholesterol 24S-hydroxylase (CYP46A1) converts cholesterol into 24S-hydroxycholesterol in neurons and participates in cholesterol homeostasis in the central nervous system, including the retina. We aimed to evaluate the consequences of CYP46A1 inhibition by voriconazole on cholesterol homeostasis and function in the retina. Rats received daily intraperitoneal injections of voriconazole (60mg/kg), minocycline (22mg/kg), voriconazole plus minocycline, or vehicle during five consecutive days. Visually induced motion sickness and presence in videogames: The role of sound

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known phenomenon in virtual environments, simulators, and videogames. We conducted an experiment to analyze the role of sound on the severity of VIMS and the feeling of presence in videogames. Thirty-two subjects first watched a pre-recorded sequence of the game “Mirrors Edge” and then played the game actively. Game-play sound was activated for half of the participants. VIMS was measured via the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and the Fast Motion Sickness Scale, presence was captured using the Presence Questionnaire. Nutrients attenuate the negative effect of ocean acidification on reef coral calcification in the Arabian Sea upwelling zone (Masirah Island, Oman)

Tropical shallow-water reefs are the most diverse ecosystem in the ocean. Its persistence rests upon adequate calcification rates of the reef building biota, such as reef corals. Optimum calcification rates of reef corals occur in oligotrophic environments with high seawater saturation states of aragonite (Ωsw), which leads to increased vulnerability to anthropogenic ocean acidification and eutrophication.
