From common operational picture to common situational understanding: An analysis based on practitioner perspectives

2021

Abstract The concepts of Situational Awareness (SA) and Common Operational Picture (COP) are closely related and well-acknowledged to be crucial factors for effective emergency management. In multi-agency operations, such as extreme weather events, the involved first responders manage the event with different mandates, objectives, and tools which can make it challenging to build a COP. Effective collaboration requires a common situational understanding, based on knowledge about each other’s responsibilities and tasks, mutual respect and trust, as well as common communication tools for emergency communication and information sharing. This paper argues that the COP serves as a basis for decid…

Digital health technology enhances resilient behaviour: evidence from the ward

2019

PurposeIn the healthcare management domain, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the role of resilience practices in improving patient safety. The purpose of this paper is to understand the capabilities that enable healthcare resilience and how digital technologies can support these capabilities.Design/methodology/approachWithin- and cross-case research methodology was used to study resilience mechanisms and capabilities in healthcare and to understand how digital health technologies impact healthcare resilience. The authors analyze data from two Italian hospitals through the lens of the operational failure literature and anchor the findings to the theory of dynamic capabilities.Findings…

Innovation and knowledge creation: perspectives on the SMEs sector

2013

Purpose – The paper aims to look at small to medium‐sized enterprises' (SMEs') approach to learning and innovation.Design/methodology/approach – The first research direction focuses on the internal and external sources for learning used in the innovation process. A second research direction focuses on the main types of innovation SMEs engage in along with some of the obstacles or constraints identified within the innovation process. In order to answer the research questions set, the authors conducted a survey among 161 Romanian SMEs from various economic sectors and covering different geographical areas.Findings – Romanian SMEs display a learning orientation related to innovation, using bes…

Participative management and its influence on organizational change

2012

PurposeThis paper aims to deal with the influence of a participatory management style along a change process, specifically in seeking to analyze the effect of participative management style on resistance to change and its effects on change performance.Design/methodology/approachAfter a revision of previous literature, an empirical research is presented to test the existence and signs of the relationships between participation and organizational change. To measure the main concepts, the authors have used scales and other measures already published and through a correlation analysis gain some insight into the relationships among variables.FindingsData suggest that participative management mig…

Organisational learning capability, product innovation performance and export intensity

2012

The hypothesis that managerial characteristics which facilitate the organisational learning process can provide firms with a basis for competitive advantage has received a great deal of attention. While there is evidence that organisational learning affects export intensity, we argue that intermediate variables, such as innovation, should be used in order to evaluate its impact in organisations. This study shows that firms with a higher organisational learning capability tend to be more innovative, and for this reason, they are more likely to export a higher share of their production. From a longitudinal perspective, we use structural equation modeling on a database from Italian and Spanish…

Transformational leadership and absorptive capacity: an analysis of the organisational catalysts for this relationship

2017

ABSTRACTResearch analysing the antecedents of a firm’s absorptive capacity suggests that transformational leadership (TL) is one of its main determinants. However, the few studies focusing on the relationship between these two variables do not explicitly assess why transformational leaders facilitate knowledge acquisition, sharing and retention inside firms. This paper suggests that the reason is that the former contributes to the creation of an organisational context that favours learning processes. We test our research model on a sample of 467 Spanish industrial firms. Findings provide evidence that TL is positively related to the firm’s absorptive capacity and that this relationship is m…

Do top- and mid-level managers view Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems success measures differently?

2006

We investigated ERP systems success measurement from the perspectives of top- and mid-level managers. Using surveys in two small Northern European countries, we aimed to determine whether differences exist between the two groups. Our results showed that there are no significant statistical differences between the two groups. The implications of the findings for both practice and research are outlined.

Fixed point iterative schemes for variational inequality problems

2018

In a wide class of evolutionary processes, the problem of computing the solutions of an initial value problem is encountered. Here, we consider projected dynamical systems in the sense of \cite{Daniele} and references therein. Precisely, a projected dynamical system is an operator which solves the initial value problem: \begin{equation}\label{PDS}\frac{dx(t)}{dt}= \Pi_{\mathbb{K}}\left(x(t),-F(x(t))\right), \quad x(0)=x_0 \in \mathbb{K}, \, t \in [0,+\infty[,\tag{P}\end{equation} where $\mathbb{K}$ is a convex polyhedral set in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $F: \mathbb{K} \to \mathbb{R}^n$ and $\Pi_{\mathbb{K}}: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{K} \to \mathbb{R}^n$ is given as follows $\Pi_{\mathbb{K}}(x,-F(x))…

Lattices of Jordan algebras

2010

AbstractCommutative Jordan algebras play a central part in orthogonal models. The generations of these algebras is studied and applied in deriving lattices of such algebras. These lattices constitute the natural framework for deriving new orthogonal models through factor aggregation and disaggregation.
