Abstract A FTIR procedure is proposed for the direct determination of methanol and ethanol in liquid samples, such as alcoholic beverages and eau-de-cologne, based on vapor generation from small injected volumes of untreated samples into a heated Pyrex glass reactor in which, at a temperature of 80°C, ethanol and methanol are volatilized and introduced into a long-path IR gas cell by means of a N2 carrier flow. The IR spectra obtained present two characteristic ethanol bands (1050 and 880 cm−1) and a single characteristic methanol band (1030 cm−1). Abstract An analytical methodology has been developed for the UV-spectrophotometric determination of carbaryl in waters after its preconcentration onto a polyether type polyurethane foam followed by on-line elution. The aforementioned strategy offers an easy way for in-field sampling and to improve the analytical sensitivity. Several chemical and flow variables (mass of sorbent, sample flow rate, sample volume and carrier flow rate) were studied to ensure the best performance of the system. A new method for dimethylamine determination in air is reported. The proposed assay is based on the employment of C18-packed solid phase extraction cartridges for sampling. The retained amine is then derivatized inside the cartridges with the reagent 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate. By observing the coloured area of the cartridge, a semiquantitative estimation of the amine can be made. It was also possible to distinguish between primary and secondary amines by visual inspection. Quantitative tests entailed desorption from the cartridges of the derivatives formed, and measurement of the absorbance of the collected extracts. Abstract A new method based on reaction in solid-phase extraction cartridges with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate is described for improved derivatization of amines prior to liquid chromatography. The effects of the reaction conditions, the kinetics of the reaction and the kind of packing material on the derivatization have been evaluated. The reliability of the described approach has been tested by derivatizing propylamine, diethylamine, diethanolamine, glycine, glutamic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid and β-phenylethylamine. Growth temperature influence on the GaN nanowires grown by MOVPE technique

GaN nanowires (NWs) were successfully grown by Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) growth mechanism on GaN template using metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) with diameters ranging from 20 to 200 nm and length up to few microns. The characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals an optimum growth temperature at 790°C and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations indicates oriented crystallinity of grown NWs.
X‐ray characterization of CdO thin films grown on a ‐, c ‐, r ‐ and m ‐plane sapphire by metalorganic vapour phase‐epitaxy

CdO thin films have been grown on a-plane (110), c-plane (0001), r-plane (012) and m-plane (100) sapphire substrates by metalorganic vapour-phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The effects of different substrate orientations on the structural properties of the films have been analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, including θ-2θ scans, pole figures and rocking curves. (111), (001) and (110) orientations are found on a-, r-, and m-sapphire respectively, while films deposited on c-plane exhibit an orientation in which no low-index crystal plane is parallel to the sample surface. SPS-assisted preparation of the Magnéli phase WO2.90 for thermoelectric applications

We describe the preparation and simultaneous consolidation of WO2.90 by spark plasma sintering (SPS). SPS allows for the direct manufacturing of large amounts of consolidated material. Synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction indicates that the material is single phase. Microstructure analysis indicates that the pellet is fully dense, allowing high-temperature thermoelectric properties to be reliably measured. The as-prepared samples of WO2.90 reach a ZT of 0.1 at 1100 K.
Cinnabar phase in ZnSe at high pressure

We have performed an energy-dispersive x-ray-diffraction experiment on ${\mathrm{ZnSe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Te}}_{x}$ alloys under high pressure with $x=0,$ 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2. In the downstroke a hexagonal phase appears. We suggest that this phase is cinnabar, whose stability range decreases as the Te content is reduced. The analysis of the whole series of compositions enables us to establish its lattice parameters in ZnSe $(a=3.785\AA{}$ and $c=8.844\AA{}$ at 10.5 GPa). The extinction of some diffraction peaks also suggests that the internal parameters u and $v$ are close to 0.5, indicating that the cinnabar phase in ZnSe is similar to that observed in GaAs and ZnTe.
Growth and characterization of Mg 1‐x Cd x O thin films

In this paper, we study the growth of thin films of the Mg1–xCdxO alloy in the Mg-rich range of compositions by using the metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) method at low pressure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been used to analyse the compound formation and the progressive incorporation of Cd2+ ions into the cubic MgO lattice. Both, layers with a single-cubic phase of Mg1–xCdxO and layers with a phase separation, where Cd1–xMgxO and Mg1–xCdxO coexist, have been studied. Structural characterization of TiNxOy/TiO2 single crystalline and nanometric multilayers grown by LP-MOCVD on (110)TiO2

TiO2/TiNxOy superlattices were grown by Low Pressure-Metal-Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (LP-MOVPE) technique at deposition temperatures ranking from 650 to 750°C. The growth was performed on top of TiO2(110) rutile substrates. Intense peaks observed in the X-rays rocking curves and θ-2θ diffraction patterns show the presence of crystalline epilayers. The TiNxOy layers were grown in a (200) cubic structure on the (110) quadratic TiO2 epilayer structure. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the XRD results and showed the formation of periodic and well structured epilayers.
