Io scrivo ciò che vedo. Einmal di Wim Wenders tra immagini autocelebrative e priorità del racconto

2018

Like many of Wenders’ films, the book Una volta (Einmal. Bilder und Geschichten, 1994; Once: Pictures and Stories) is the result of a fruitful encounter between different arts. Wenders now takes on the role of photographer and narrator, while never completely abandoning the more usual role of director. The beginning of every short composition in Einmal, associated with one or more images, is the usual one of fairy tales. However, the word “once” that precedes as a title most of the compositions is not just an intertextual reference to the genre of children’s literature. It is more a sort of declaration of poetics, the choice of a specific stylistic register, as well as an attempt to adhere …

Cinema e fotografia. Su "Palermo Shooting" di Wim Wenders

2022

The topic complex of photographer and photography is of central importance for Wim Wenders' cinematic and literary work. Of course, it is not just about photography itself, but a subtle play with narrative and metapoetic references. All the figures of photographers who from the beginning repeatedly appear as protagonists in Wenders' films also tell of pictures and how to make them. Most of them are men who have a disturbed relationship to the world around them and to their own selves. Men who travel in search of a truer grip on reality.

«Per lo più senza desideri e un poco infelici». Ritratto della madre perduta in Wunschloses Unglück di Peter Handke

2020

In this work Wunschloses Unglück is read as if it were an impressionistic biography in images. The tale was born out of an attempt to give Handke’s fifty-year-old mother, who died of suicide, back a story and an identity. A way to give content and contours to the woman and to neutralize the depersonalizing effect of the news of the event in the pages of the local newspaper. The story of the mother is actually, from the very beginning, a reflection of the writer on his own work, on the difficulty of writing ‘true’ stories, on the tormented search for a precarious balance between description and documentation, between narration and image, between truth and fiction. Handke would seem to be gui…

Forma e funzione alla prova della fotografia. Alcune riflessioni a partire da Walker Evans

2022

Abstract. The form-function relationship is a topos of culture, investigated from multiple perspectives: it is useful to understand the role that objects have played in the cultural process. The contribution analyses the photographic representation of objects and aims to highlight the characteristics of objects that emerge through photographic representation: the images by Walker Evans, presented in the portfolio Beauties of the Common Tool («Fortune Magazine», 1955), demonstrate the capacity of photography to highlight the formal and functional characteristics of tools and the role they play in the process of hominization.

A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT TO OVERTURN PREJUDICES ON ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE IN NURSING HOMES USING ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

2016

It is widely known that Alzheimer’s disease is burdened with strong prejudices with negative connotations. This may contribute to increase patient’s isolation and marginalization, and to render Nursing Homes places of confinement and seclusion. Residents with dementia have trouble in relating with the outside world and in expressing themselves about their own disease, due to their cognitive decline, but also because of marginalization. We used artistic photography as an accessible and effective tool to bring down barriers and encourage residents’ communication. Artistic photography is the most immediate and accessible form of art for all people. The aim of our social experiment was to help …

Dall’altra parte dello spazio. Immaginazioni surmoderne nell’iconografia di Di Donato

2017

Displacements measurement in a building model using the speckle photography technique

2005

The use of reduced scale models in civil engineering has made it possible to study large structures such as buildings. Using non-destructive optical techniques such as double-exposure speckle photography, extremely valuable results can be obtained, where mathematical methods are often not very exact. This work studies the model of an eighteen-storey building in which displacements can be measured at each storey of each view. It also presents a comparison of the displacement field, which was obtained with the Finite Element Method.

Enhancing visual literacy through interpretation of photo-genres: toward a genre typology of journalistic photographs

2016

ABSTRACTAlthough genre is one of the most extensively employed concepts in various disciplines, only a few attempts have been made to classify images in the press, providing either a palette of thematic categories similar to those of photography competitions or theory-based classifications, which often ignore certain types of photographs. In addition, no studies have suggested the genre typology as a tool for the interpretation of journalistic photographs. Based on a literature review and visual material analysis from the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, this study compiles a typology that sets out four photo-genres: news photography, reportage photography, portrait photography and illustrativ…

Intercomparison of instruments for measuring leaf area index over rice

2015

Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical parameter used to determine foliage cover and crop growth in environmental studies in order to assess crop yield. LAI estimates can be classified as direct or indirect methods. Direct methods are destructive, time consuming, and difficult to apply over large fields. Indirect methods are non-destructive and cost-effective due to its portability, accuracy and repeatability. In this study, we compare indirect LAI estimates acquired from two classical instruments such as LAI-2000 and digital cameras for hemispherical photography, with LAI estimates acquired with a smart app (PocketLAI) installed on a mobile smartphone. In this work it is shown that LAI…
