Processing, basic characterization and standard dielectric measurements on PLZT x/65/35 (2≤x≤13) ceramics

ABSTRACTThe influence of external stress (0-800bar) on the dielectric properties of PLZT x/65/35 (2≤x≤13) ceramics was investigated. Applying uniaxial pressure leads to a change in the peak intensity of the electric permittivity (ϵ), of its frequency dispersion as well as in the dielectric hysteresis. The peak intensity of ϵ becomes broader and shifts to lower temperatures for PLZT x/65/35 with x = 2, 4, 6, 7, 9.75, 10, 11 and 13, with increasing pressure, on heating. It was concluded that applying uniaxial pressure induces an increase of Tm, and thus has similar effects as the increase of the Ti ion concentration in the PZT system. Enhanced acoustic pressure sensors based on coherent perfect absorber-laser effect

Lasing is a well-established field in optics with several applications. Yet, having lasing or huge amplification in other wave systems remains an elusive goal. Here, we utilize the concept of coherent perfect absorber-laser to realize an acoustic analog of laser with a proven amplification of more than 10 4 in terms of the scattered acoustic signal at a frequency of a few kHz. Color centers in diamond as novel probes of superconductivity

Magnetic imaging using color centers in diamond through both scanning and wide-field methods offers a combination of unique capabilities for studying superconductivity, for example, enabling accurate vector magnetometry at high temperature or high pressure, with spatial resolution down to the nanometer scale. The paper briefly reviews various experimental modalities in this rapidly developing nascent field and provides an outlook towards possible future directions.

Controlled thermal oxidation of nanostructured vanadium thin films

Abstract Pure V thin films were dc sputtered with different pressures (0.4 and 0.6 Pa) and particle incident angles α of 0°, 20° and 85°, by using the GLancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) technique. The sputtered films were characterized regarding their electrical resistivity behaviour in atmospheric pressure and in-vacuum conditions as a function of temperature (40–550 °C), in order to control the oxidation process. High-Pressure Behavior of Nickel Sulfate Monohydrate: Isothermal Compressibility, Structural Polymorphism, and Transition Pathway

Single crystals of synthetic nickel sulfate monohydrate, α-NiSO4·H2O (space-group symmetry C2/c at ambient conditions), were subject to high-pressure behavior investigations in a diamond-anvil cell up to 10.8 GPa. By means of subtle spectral changes in Raman spectra recorded at 298 K on isothermal compression, two discontinuities were identified at 2.47(1) and 6.5(5) GPa. Both transitions turn out to be apparently second order in character, as deduced from the continuous evolution of unit-cell volumes determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Variable Cooperative Interactions in the Pressure and Thermally Induced Multistep Spin Transition in a Two-Dimensional Iron(II) Coordination Polymer

Two types of experiments conducted to investigate the effect of pressure on the spin crossover (SCO) properties of the 2D Fe(II) coordination polymer formulated {Fe[bipy(ttr)2]}n are reported, namely, (1) magnetic measurements performed at variable temperature and at fixed pressure and (2) visible spectroscopy at variable pressure and fixed temperature. The magnetic experiments carried out under a hydrostatic pressure constraint of 0.04, 0.08, and 0.8 GPa reveal a two-step spin transition behavior. Bright Hot Impacts by Erupted Fragments Falling Back on the Sun: Magnetic Channelling

Dense plasma fragments were observed to fall back on the solar surface by the Solar Dynamics Observatory after an eruption on 7 June 2011, producing strong EUV brightenings. Previous studies investigated impacts in regions of weak magnetic field. Here we model the $\sim~300$ km/s impact of fragments channelled by the magnetic field close to active regions. In the observations, the magnetic channel brightens before the fragment impact. We use a 3D-MHD model of spherical blobs downfalling in a magnetized atmosphere. Chronospeciation of uranium released in soil during a long-term DU shell weathering experiment.

Corrosion process was investigated of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition fragments buried for three years in aerobic soils continuously irrigated with water. The continuing corrosion process was triggered through formation of soluble uranyl oxyhydrate phases such as metaschoepite and becquerelite, which were identified by micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The soil was not amended by phosphates and, therefore, no uranyl phosphates were found as corrosion products on the DU surfaces by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Persistence of orographic mixed‐phase clouds

Mixed-phase clouds (MPCs) consist of ice crystals and supercooled water droplets at temperatures between 0 and approximately −38°C. They are thermodynamically unstable because the saturation vapor pressure over ice is lower than that over supercooled liquid water. Nevertheless, long-lived MPCs are ubiquitous in the Arctic. Here we show that persistent MPCs are also frequently found in orographic terrain, especially in the Swiss Alps, when the updraft velocities are high enough to exceed saturation with respect to liquid water allowing simultaneous growth of supercooled liquid droplets and ice crystals.
