Questionnaires and simulations to assess daylighting in Italian university classrooms for IEQ and energy issues

2021

Abstract Results from the DAYKE-Italy project are presented. An investigation on daylighting in eight classrooms in five Italian universities was carried out through a combined approach: an ad-hoc survey administered to students to investigate how they perceive daylight in classroom, and numerical simulations (DIVA + ALFA) to calculate a set of objective metrics (daylight, circadian, and energy-related). A sample of 542 questionnaires was collected through two sessions and the subjective judgments were correlated to objective metrics. Results from descriptive and statistical analyses showed: (i) the correlation was significant for all daylight metrics: among them, average daylight factor an…

Does the level of competition influence the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and service quality?

2018

In times of economic instability and increasingly competitive environments, organisations need to differentiate themselves and find the best version of themselves. Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is increasingly present in organisations in general and constitutes an opportunity to improve performance in the sports associations sector. Sporting clubs are organisations of great qualitative and quantitative relevance, although few studies have approached their entrepreneurial character as an opportunity to seek success in achieving their goals. Although the positive relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organisational performance has been well established, the moderating role o…

Hormonal differences in intimate partner violence perpetrators when they cope with acute stress: A pilot study

2021

Background: Only a few studies have paid attention to the ability of perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPVAW) against women to cope with acute stress, including hormonal pa-rameters. In fact, previous studies assessed how salivary testosterone (Tsal) and cortisol (Csal) changed after coping with an acute emotional stressor (directly related to IPVAW), and they con-cluded that an imbalance between the two hormones might be characteristic of these men. Never-theless, they neglected to examine the role of other hormones, such as salivary oxytocin (OXsal), which also seemed to play an important role in behavioral regulation, and whether this response could be generalized to other types…

FORI (TRAINING FOR INCLUSION): DIRECT LINE TO SCIENCE

2021

FORi (Training For Inclusion) is a project proposal of the University of Palermo aimed at implementing an innovative, dynamic and technological training idea in order to increase inclusion. The professional skills training target are support teachers for pupils with SEN (Special Education Needs); university students attending degree courses preparatory to teaching; teachers and educators. The services and products offered are based on recent research and studies by “Disabilities Studies”. Disability studies is an academic discipline that examines the meaning, nature, and consequences of disability. The project focus is an updated and innovative training that aims at the well-being of the pe…

EXtra moenia_intra urbem

2017

Combinatorial proofs of two theorems of Lutz and Stull

2021

Recently, Lutz and Stull used methods from algorithmic information theory to prove two new Marstrand-type projection theorems, concerning subsets of Euclidean space which are not assumed to be Borel, or even analytic. One of the theorems states that if $K \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ is any set with equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions, then $$ \dim_{\mathrm{H}} π_{e}(K) = \min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\} $$ for almost every $e \in S^{n - 1}$. Here $π_{e}$ stands for orthogonal projection to $\mathrm{span}(e)$. The primary purpose of this paper is to present proofs for Lutz and Stull's projection theorems which do not refer to information theoretic concepts. Instead, they will rely on combinatori…

Synergetic and redundant information flow detected by unnormalized Granger causality: application to resting state fMRI

2015

Objectives: We develop a framework for the analysis of synergy and redundancy in the pattern of information flow between subsystems of a complex network. Methods: The presence of redundancy and/or synergy in multivariate time series data renders difficult to estimate the neat flow of information from each driver variable to a given target. We show that adopting an unnormalized definition of Granger causality one may put in evidence redundant multiplets of variables influencing the target by maximizing the total Granger causality to a given target, over all the possible partitions of the set of driving variables. Consequently we introduce a pairwise index of synergy which is zero when two in…

Quotients of Hypersurfaces in Weighted Projective Space

2009

Abstract In [Bini, van Geemen, Kelly, Mirror quintics, discrete symmetries and Shioda maps, 2009] some quotients of one-parameter families of Calabi–Yau varieties are related to the family of Mirror Quintics by using a construction due to Shioda. In this paper, we generalize this construction to a wider class of varieties. More specifically, let A be an invertible matrix with non-negative integer entries. We introduce varieties XA and in weighted projective space and in , respectively. The variety turns out to be a quotient of a Fermat variety by a finite group. As a by-product, XA is a quotient of a Fermat variety and is a quotient of XA by a finite group. We apply this construction to som…
