Micro(Nano)plastic analysis: a green and sustainable perspective
2022
Within the last years aspects such as green, eco-friendly and sustainable are making their way into analytical chemistry. The field has changed with the introduction of these concepts. Information on the consumption of toxic solvents and energy is now a part of everyday life. This green analytical chemistry could be playing a pioneering role in the analysis of micro(nano)plastics in the environment. We discuss the roles of green analytical and sustainability within micro(nano) plastics determination and its possible applications. We explain its many advantages, like their function to preserve the environment and operator health or their role in the so-called eco-friendly methodologies, but …
Breaking the habit
2018
Internet gaming disorder has been widely recognized as a new health issue. At present, we are experiencing a rapid growth of knowledge on different aspects of this disorder, such as, for instance, prevalence rates, underlying neurobiological mechanisms, and treatment strategies. In contrast, preventing individuals from developing Internet gaming disorder is a matter that has not yet progressed sufficiently. Although we can basically refer to measures and techniques known to be effective in preventing other addictive behaviors, the special demands of preventing Internet gaming disorder remain largely obscured or disregarded. The policy actions identified in the review by Király et al. (2018)…
No major role for periconceptional folic acid use and its interaction with theMTHFR C677Tpolymorphism in the etiology of congenital anorectal malform…
2014
Background: Both genetic and nongenetic factors are suggested to be involved in the etiology of congenital anorectal malformations (ARM). Maternal periconceptional use of folic acid supplements were inconsistently suggested to play a role in the prevention of ARM. Therefore, we investigated independent associations and interactions of maternal periconceptional folic acid supplement use and the infant and maternal MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) C677T polymorphisms with the risk of ARM and subgroups of ARM. Methods: A case-control study was conducted among 371 nonsyndromic ARM cases and 714 population-based controls born between 1990 and 2012 using maternal questionnaires and DNA…
Reduktaseschwäche als Ursache andrologischer Störungen?
2009
Formation of secondary carbonates and native sulphur in sulphate-rich Messinian strata, Sicily
2010
Abstract Microbially formed authigenic carbonates accompanied by native sulphur are present in the ‘Calcare Solfifero’ below a thick succession of gypsum deposited during the Messinian salinity crisis in Sicily. We sampled these carbonates and associated sulphur in five former sulphur mines to subject them to a detailed petrographic and geochemical study in order to explore their different modes of formation. Native sulphur formed in conjunction with microbial sulphate reduction, which is reflected in its depletion in 34S (δ34S values as low as − 2‰ vs. V-CDT) and an enrichment of 34S in the residual sulphate (δ34S values as high as + 61‰). The oxidation of organic matter by sulphate reduct…
The Invention of the Nordic Cuisine
2016
The article proposes an analysis of the success of the restaurant Noma in Copenhagen. In order to achieve this goal, it focuses on the viewpoint of its chef, René Redzepi and analyses the new trending culinary movement known as New Nordic Cuisine. Behind the success of the restaurant Noma, a deep reconfiguration of the Northern European culinary culture can be recognized which is not limited to food but claims for a general turnover of the entire Scandinavian identity. The article enlightens a deep connection between the story of the fictional character Babette (protagonist of both the short novel and the movie “Babette’s Feast”) and the shift led by the New Nordic Cuisine’s movement over t…
Antitumor effects of novel co-drugs linking histone deacetylase and ribonucleotide reductase inhibitors in hematological tumors
2011
Combination therapy is the mainstay of anticancer therapy due to the significant synergistic effects achievable. Now that anticancer drug research turned toward a more molecular targeted approach, the design of dual-target drugs appears to be a new promising strategy with the potential to improve the therapeutic efficacy of the single drug and to reduce the probability of drug induced resistance and cross resistance. In our previous work, we found that 3’-C-methyl-adenosine (3’-Me-Ado), developed by us as a potent ribonucleotide reductase (RR) inhibitor with antitumor activity against both human leukemia and carcinoma cell lines, elicited significant growth inhibitory and apoptotic synergis…
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase homozygosis and low-density lipoproteins in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C
2012
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase status, homocysteine and lipoproteins levels have been associated with severity of disease and both rapid and sustained virological response (SVR) in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C (CHC). We aimed to assess the association of homocysteine and MTHFR status with serum cholesterol levels and their potential links to both histological findings and virological response, in patients with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus (HCV). A total of 119 consecutive patients were evaluated by biopsy and metabolic measurements. A total of 103 healthy blood donors were used as controls. Serum homocysteine and MTHFR C677T mutation were also evaluated. All patients un…
Consensus guidelines for the detection of immunogenic cell death
2014
Apoptotic cells have long been considered as intrinsically tolerogenic or unable to elicit immune responses specific for dead cell-associated antigens. However, multiple stimuli can trigger a functionally peculiar type of apoptotic demise that does not go unnoticed by the adaptive arm of the immune system, which we named "immunogenic cell death" (ICD). ICD is preceded or accompanied by the emission of a series of immunostimulatory damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in a precise spatiotemporal configuration. Several anticancer agents that have been successfully employed in the clinic for decades, including various chemotherapeutics and radiotherapy, can elicit ICD. Moreover, defect…
Synthesis of iodobiaryls and dibenzofurans by direct coupling at BDD anodes.
2014
The first direct oxidative phenol-arene cross-coupling reactions of an iodine-containing guaiacol derivative and the possible over-oxidation products of electron-rich phenols are described. Hereby, a "green" and targeted synthesis for dibenzofurans was developed.
