Adapting Formal Logic for Everyday Mathematics

Although logic is considered central to mathematics and computer science, there is evidence that teaching logic has not been a great success. We identify three issues where what is typically taught conflicts with what is needed by those who are supposed to apply logic. First, what is taught about the notion of implication often disagrees with human intuition. We argue that in some cases human intuition is wrong, and in some others teaching is to blame. Automated Checking of Flexible Mathematical Reasoning in the Case of Systems of (In)Equations and the Absolute Value Operator

We present an approach and a tool for automatically providing feedback on solutions that involve complicated reasoning patterns. Currently the tool supports linear systems of equations and inequations that may also contain the absolute value operator and a restricted form of rational functions. This suffices for designing problems that are laborious to solve with standard mechanical procedures, but much easier using short-cuts that students may find by creative thinking. This article presents a theoretical framework for a holistic model of the development of early mathematical skills in early childhood education. The first aim of this study was to conduct a comprehensive international review of the literature to explore early mathematical skills categories. The literature review yielded three early mathematical skills categories, namely (1) numerical skills, (2) spatial thinking skills and (3) mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. Analysis of the determinants of entrepreneurial intention: the case of Burkina Faso

International audience; In this study, we propose to analyze students' entrepreneurial intention, drawing on Lazear's (2004) self-selection model. This model captures the role of "human capital" in employment assignment and emphasizes the importance of the variety of skills in the individual's entrepreneurial orientation. For this purpose, we have a database collected in 2017 from over 1000 students at Ouaga I and Ouaga II universities in Burkina Faso. The results of estimates obtained using the quantile regression method show a positive and significant effect of the diversity of skills on the intention score, mainly at the median level. Šis darbs pēta jauniešu prezentēšanas prasmes izaugsmi, kā arī apskata šo prasmju īpašības, ķermeņa valodas iedarbību publisko runu laikā, kā arī apskata, kas būtu jādara, lai publiskā runa būtu atmiņā paliekoša. Darba mērķis ir izpētīt kādas ir tipiskākās iezīmes prezentēšanas prasmēs jauniešu vecumposā, tādējādi rodot iespējas uzlabot viņu zināšanas un prasmes. Multisensorā pieeja bieži sastopamo vārdu atpazīšanas prasmju attīstībai angļu valodā no 5 līdz 6 gadu veciem bērniem

Lasīšana ir viena no būtiskākajām prasmēm, ko skolēni apgūst sākumskolā. Daudziem skolēniem bieži sastopamie vārdi angļu valodā sagādā grūtības, jo tie nepakļaujas zināmajām lasīšanas stratēģijām. Turklāt bieži sastopamie vārdi parādās lielos daudzumos lasīšanas tekstos. Diploma darba autore ir novērojusi, ka ir bērni no 5 līdz 6 gadu vecumam, kuriem grūtības sagādā bieži sastopamus vārdus atpazīšana, tādēļ nav augsts lasīšanas ātrums un izpratne par tekstu. Kā pētījumu metodi autore ir izvēlējusies gadījuma pētījumu, lai izpētītu, kā multisensorā pieeja var palīdzēt 5 līdz 6 gadu veciem skolēniem atpazīt bieži sastopamos vārdus. Profiles of reading and fluency and spelling skills : stability and change across the early school years

In this longitudinal study, we examined what kind of profiles of reading fluency and spelling skills could be identified among pupils (N = 467) and how stable these profiles were during the first three years of school. We also investigated how monolingual (Swedish) and simultaneously bilingual (Finnish-Swedish) pupils and gender were distributed within the profiles. Three profiles of reading fluency and spelling skills were found among the pupils through latent profile analysis: low, average, and high performing.
