The following paper analyzes the plot of the 1934 film It Happened One Night, by Frank Capra, an authentic emblem within the film genre of romantic comedy. In it, the protagonists manage to overcome the obstacles that are offered in their way thanks to the pretense of a relationship, the marital one, which finally will end up becoming effective. Recalling a famous Lacanian sentence, according to which human beings “pretend to pretend”, the plot devised by Capra will be analyzed in order to go over the steps that sequence such pretenses. This article aims, departing from the legal text and considering existing jurisprudence, to unveil the true meaning of these principles.

This work deals with valency, a key syntactic notion whose chemistry-inspired label was established by Lucien Tesnière (1959), one of the most well-known contributors to the Prague Linguistic Circle. We will concentrate on two questions: (a) to what extent does valency play a role in Second Language Learning (SLL)?; and (b) what role should the use of valency play in language teaching practices? This paper will provide answers to these questions and propose reasons for motivating the use of valency in SLL.

This research investigates the long¿run after¿performance of firms conducting seasoned equity offering in the Spanish market during the period 1993¿1999. Due to statistical and conceptual problems related to the estimation and contrast of long¿horizon returns, we analyse the robustness of results to different methodologies. We obtain evidence that issuers experience negative abnormal returns economically and statistically significant during the year after the event. When Germinal was published in 1885, the critic classified Zola as a “socialist” writer. The author himself used this adjective many times referring to his work. At the same time, he didn’t know Marxism and was a resolute opponent to revolution, equality and the government by the people. The paper aims to explain some aspects of Zola’s “socialism” taking into account his origins, his youth experiences and the evolution of his works.
