In fact, I would rather talk about applied language studies than applied linguistics, as I understand this area of inquiry to include any language-related research that bears a strong connection to societally significant phenomena. Kirjallinen tuottaminen on olennainen osa kielten kouluopetusta Suomessa. Perinteisesti kirjalliset tuotokset arvioidaan ja opettaja antaa niistä palautetta. Tämä kandidaatin tutkielma selvittää yhden lukioryhmän osalta, millaista palautetta opettaja antoi heidän kirjoittamistaan esseistä ja kuinka oppilaat kokivat tämän palautteen. Tutkielmassa on käytetty sekä laadullisia että määrällisiä tutkimusotteita. Ensin oppilaat kirjoittivat lukiokurssillaan esseet, jotka opettaja arvosteli ja antoi niistä kommentteja.
