Acetylcholine 5 × 10−8 g/ml reduces the Ca45 uptake of the beating left atria of guinea-pig; the tissue calcium is not altered. In resting atria, acetylcholine 5 × 10−7 g/ml has no influence upon the calcium content and Ca45 uptake. It is concluded that acetylcholine acts by shortening the action potential duration and thereby reduces the release of cellular calcium per excitation.

Abstract Micronutrient deficiencies threaten global food production. Attempts to biofortify crops rely on a clear understanding of micronutrient uptake processes. Zinc deficiency in rice is a serious problem. One of the pathways proposed for the transfer of zinc from soils into rice plants involves deoxymugineic acid (DMA), a phytosiderophore. Cellular Uptake of DNA Block Copolymer Micelles with Different Shapes

The cellular uptake of DNA block copolymer micelles composed of DNA-b-PPO in Caco-2 cells was studied. In particular it was investigated if the shape of micelle aggregates influences the internalization. Rod-like polymeric particles were taken up 12 times more efficiently than their spherical counter parts although they were composed of the same constituents. Furthermore, it was observed that internalization of all the micelle systems was more efficient than the pristine DNA controls. A cytotoxicity assay proved the non-toxic nature of DNA-b-PPO micelle aggregates.

Prepulse inhibition can predict the motivational effects of cocaine in female mice exposed to maternal separation

The prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle response can identify the rodents that are more sensitive to the effects of cocaine. Mice with a lower PPI presented a higher vulnerability to the effects of cocaine and a higher susceptibility to developing a substance use disorder (SUD). Effect of the pacing strategy during half-duration resistance test on the mechanic, metabolic and cardio-respiratory response

Objective: Changes in pacing rhythm are translated into functional and metabolic changes that can be significantly reflected in the final results of an athlete. Method: Ten male subjects, with moderate performance level (age: 25.2 ± 2.2 years; VO2max: 56.9 ± 5.7 ml kgâ1 minâ1), performed four 5-min races with different pacing strategies: constant-pace (CP), record-pace (RP), kicker-pace (KP), incremental-pace (IP).
