Stability and bioaccessibility of EGCG within edible micro-hydrogels. Chitosan vs. gelatin, a comparative study

Micro-hydrogels are very promising systems for the protection and controlled delivery of sensitive bioactives, but limited knowledge exists regarding the impact of this encapsulation on their bioaccessibility. In this work, two different hydrogel-forming biopolymers (gelatin and chitosan) were compared as wall materials for the microencapsulation of a model flavonoid, (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). A Trisialoganglioside Containing a Sialyl α2-6 N-Acetylgalactosamine Residue Is a Cholinergic-Specific Antigen, Chol-1α1

Cholinergic-specific antigens termed the Chol-1 family have been suggested to be of a ganglioside nature by Richardson et al. (J. Neurochem. 38, 1605-1614, 1982). Two molecular species of polysialogangliosides among bovine brain gangliosides were found to react with anti-Chol-1 alpha antiserum. One of them, Chol-1 alpha-a, was isolated and characterized as a trisialoganglioside containing the gangliotetraose backbone in which 1 mol of sialic acid was attached to each of the reducing end galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine and internal galactose residues, respectively. Ocean warming is altering the biogeographical distribution of marine organisms. In the tropics, rising sea surface temperatures are restructuring coral reef communities with sensitive species being lost. At the biogeographical divide between temperate and tropical communities, warming is causing macroalgal forest loss and the spread of tropical corals, fishes and other species, termed “tropicalization”. A lack of field research into the combined effects of warming and ocean acidification means there is a gap in our ability to understand and plan for changes in coastal ecosystems. New hydrogel matrices based on chemical crosslinked α,β -polyas parthydrazide: Synthesis, characterization and in vivo biocompatibility studies

New swellable micromatrices of α,β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy) crosslinked with glutaraldehyde were prepared. The effect of crosslinking agent concentration was evaluated. In particular, crosslinking density affected aqueous dynamic swelling and glass-transition temperature of the material. The structure of prepared networks was also studied by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray analysis. Finally, biocompatibility of PAHy derivatives was investigated in vivo by subcutaneous implantation and in oral administration to laboratory animals.

Abstract Nanostructures composed of dextran sulfate (DS)/ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles (NPs) adsorbed on phospholipid monolayers at a liquid–liquid interface were prepared and characterized electrochemically in relation to their potential use in drug delivery systems. Excess enthalpies of solution of primary and secondary alcohols in dodecyldimethylamine oxide micellar solutions

The excess enthalpies of solution with respect to water of some primary and secondary alcohols in dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) micellar solutions were measured by mixing aqueous solutions of alcohols with surfactant solutions. Standard free energies, enthalpies and entropies were obtained from the distribution of alcohols between aqueous and micellar phases. It is shown that thermodynamics of transfer of secondary alcohols from aqueous to the DDAO micellar phase differ slightly from those of their corresponding primary alcohols, that the additivity rule holds for free energies of transfer and that enthalpy and entropy display convex curves. Multiarm star polyglycerol-block-poly(HEMA) as a versatile precursor for the preparation of micellar nanocapsules with different properties

Well-defined multiarm star polymer with hyperbranched polyglycerol as core and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) as arms were used as precursor for the preparation of inverted and aqueous micellar nanocapsules. The partial modification of the hydroxyl groups of PHEMA arms with aliphatic chains led to the formation of inverted micellar nanocapsules. Halloysite Nanotubes Loaded with Calcium Hydroxide: Alkaline Fillers for the Deacidification of Waterlogged Archeological Woods

A novel green protocol for the deacidifying consolidation of waterlogged archaeological woods through aqueous dispersions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1500 and halloysite nanotubes containing calcium hydroxide has been designed. First, we prepared functionalized halloysite nanotubes filled with Ca(OH)2 in their lumen. The controlled and sustained release of Ca(OH)2 from the halloysite lumen extended its neutralization action over time, allowing the development of a long-term deacidification of the wood samples. Preservation of fungi in archaeological charcoal

During the analysis of wood charcoal remains from archaeological sites, it is common to find different microorganisms and different forms of degradation present in the plant tissue. However, one may encounter difficulties when attempting to identify these microorganisms and determine when their attack occurred.
