A concept for a magnetic particle imaging scanner with Halbach arrays

2020

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a new medical imaging technique visualizing the concentration distribution of superparamagnetic nanoparticles used as tracer material. MPI is not yet in clinical routine, since one of the challenges is the upscaling of scanners. Typically, the magnetic fields of MPI scanners are generated electromagnetically, resulting in an immense power consumption but providing high flexibility in terms of adjusting the field strengths and very fast image acquisition rates. Permanent magnets provide high flux densities and do not need any power supply. However, the flux density is not adjustable, and a mechanical movement is slow compared to electromagnetically varying …

Genome-wide mapping of copy number variations in patients with both anorectal malformations and central nervous system abnormalities

2014

Background: Anorectal malformations (ARM) have a prevalence of around 1 in 2500 live births. In around 50% of patients, the malformation is isolated, while in the remainder it arises within the context of complex genetic abnormalities or a defined genetic syndrome. Recent studies have implicated rare copy number variations (CNVs) in both isolated and nonisolated ARM, and identified plausible candidate genes. Methods: In the present study, array-based molecular karyotyping was performed to identify causative CNVs in 32 sporadic ARM patients with comorbid abnormalities of the central nervous system (CNS). This phenotype was selected to enrich for rare CNVs, since previous research has implica…

Dorsal root ganglia neurite outgrowth measured as a function of changes in microelectrode array resistance

2017

Current research in prosthetic device design aims to mimic natural movements using a feedback system that connects to the patient's own nerves to control the device. The first step in using neurons to control motion is to make and maintain contact between neurons and the feedback sensors. Therefore, the goal of this project was to determine if changes in electrode resistance could be detected when a neuron extended a neurite to contact a sensor. Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were harvested from chick embryos and cultured on a collagen-coated carbon nanotube microelectrode array for two days. The DRG were seeded along one side of the array so the processes extended across the array, contacting a…

An AER handshake-less modular infrastructure PCB with x8 2.5Gbps LVDS serial links

2014

Nowadays spike-based brain processing emulation is taking off. Several EU and others worldwide projects are demonstrating this, like SpiNNaker, BrainScaleS, FACETS, or NeuroGrid. The larger the brain process emulation on silicon is, the higher the communication performance of the hosting platforms has to be. Many times the bottleneck of these system implementations is not on the performance inside a chip or a board, but in the communication between boards. This paper describes a novel modular Address-Event-Representation (AER) FPGA-based (Spartan6) infrastructure PCB (the AER-Node board) with 2.5Gbps LVDS high speed serial links over SATA cables that offers a peak performance of 32-bit 62.5…

Face-selective adhesion of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals to renal epithelial cells

1996

The interaction between the most common urinary crystal, calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) and the surface of monkey renal epithelial cells of the BSC-1 line was investigated. The [100] face of exogenous COD crystals bound selectively and rapidly to the kidney cell surface. Cellular processes extended preferentially over the [100] face initially, and then progressively covered the crystal so that by 24 hours some crystals were observed beneath the plasma membrane. When nucleated from solution onto the surface of the cell monolayer, COD crystals oriented preferentially so that their [100] faces were in direct contact with the cell surface. In contrast, when siliconized glass was used as a subs…

Reconfiguration strategies to reduce mismatch effects on PV array: An Arduino-based prototype

2014

Today, solar energy represents a widespread source of electricity among all the renewable energies. One of the major problems concerning the photovoltaic (PV) arrays is the partial shading, that is the non-uniform irradiance on its parts. The partial shading leads to several undesired effects, such as mismatch between modules and a reduction of the production of electric energy. In order to alleviate the partial shading effects, different methods can be employed. Among them, the reconfiguration of the electrical connections between modules represents an alternative solution. In this paper, an algorithm of reconfiguration for a small-scale PV plant is proposed and experimental results showin…

Experimental analysis with FPGA controller-based of MC PWM techniques for three-phase five level cascaded H-bridge for PV applications

2016

The FPGA represents a valid solution for the design of control systems for inverters adopted in the field of PV systems because of their high flexibility of use. This paper presents an experimental analysis of the MC SPWM techniques for a three-phase, five-level, cascaded H-Bridge inverter with FPGA controller-based. Several control algorithms are implemented by means of the VHDL programming language and the output voltage waveforms obtained from the main PWM techniques are compared in terms of THD%. Simulation and experimental results are analysed, compared and discussed.

Proof of Concept of an Irradiance Estimation System for Reconfigurable Photovoltaic Arrays

2015

In order to reduce the mismatch effect caused by non-uniform shadows in PV arrays, reconfigurable interconnections approaches have been recently proposed in the literature. These systems usually require the knowledge of the solar radiation affecting every solar module. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of three irradiance estimation approaches in order to define which can be well suited for reconfigurable PV arrays. It is presented a real-time solar irradiance estimation device (IrradEst), implementing the three different estimation methods. The proposed system is based on mathematical models of PV modules enabling to estimate irradiation values by sensing a combination …

Latest Frontier Technology and Design of the ATLAS Calorimeter Trigger Board Dedicated to Jet Identification for the LHC Run 3

2016

To cope with the enhanced luminosity of the beam delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2020, the “A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS” (ATLAS) experiment has planned a major upgrade. As part of this, the trigger at Level1 based on calorimeter data will be upgraded to exploit fine-granularity readout using a new system of Feature Extractors, which each use different physics objects for the trigger selection. The article focusses on the jet Feature EXtractor (jFEX) prototype, one of the three types of Feature Extractors. Up to 2 TB/s have to be processed to provide jet identification (including large area jets) and measurements of global variables within few hundred nanoseconds latency budget.…
