Trianionic gold clusters
2001
Using Penning-trap experiments and a shell-correction method incorporating ellipsoidal shape deformations, we investigate the formation and stability patterns of trianionic gold clusters. Theory and ex- periment are in remarkable agreement concerning appearance sizes and electronic shell eects. In contrast to multiply cationic clusters, decay of the trianionic gold clusters occurs primarily via electron autodetach- ment and tunneling through a Coulomb barrier, rather than via ssion. Atomic layer deposition of ternary ruthenates by combining metalorganic precursors with RuO4 as the co-reactant
2022
In this work, the use of ruthenium tetroxide (RuO4) as a co-reactant for atomic layer deposition (ALD) is reported. The role of RuO4 as a co-reactant is twofold: it acts both as an oxidizing agent and as a Ru source. It is demonstrated that ALD of a ternary Ru-containing metal oxide (i.e. a metal ruthenate) can be achieved by combining a metalorganic precursor with RuO4 in a two-step process. RuO4 is proposed to combust the organic ligands of the adsorbed precursor molecules while also binding RuO2 to the surface. As a proof of concept two metal ruthenate processes are developed: one for aluminum ruthenate, by combining trimethylaluminum (TMA) with RuO4; and one for platinum ruthenate, by c…
Ionizing radiation-engineered nanogels as insulin nanocarriers for the development of a new strategy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease
2016
A growing body of evidence shows the protective role of insulin in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A nanogel system (NG) to deliver insulin to the brain, as a tool for the development of a new therapy for Alzheimer's Disease (AD), is designed and synthetized. A carboxyl-functionalized poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) nanogel system produced by ionizing radiation is chosen as substrate for the covalent attachment of insulin or fluorescent molecules relevant for its characterization. Biocompatibility and hemocompatibility of the naked carrier is demonstrated. The insulin conjugated to the NG (NG-In) is protected by protease degradation and able to bind to insulin receptor (IR), as demonstrated by immunofl…
Formation and Rupture of Schottky Nanocontacts on ZnO Nanocolumns
2007
In this paper, the electrical transport and mechanical properties of Pt/ZnO Schottky nanocontacts have been studied simultaneously during the formation and rupture of the nanocontacts. By combining multidimensional conducting scanning force spectroscopy with appropriated data processing, the physical relevant parameters (the ideality factor, the Schottky barrier height, and the rupture voltage) are obtained. It has been found that the transport curves strongly depend on the loading force. For loading forces higher than a threshold value, the transport characteristics are similar to those of large-area Schottky contact, while below this threshold deviations from strictly thermionic emission …
Erosion Behavior of PS-PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings and the Effect of Composite Coating (PS-PVD + APS) Thickness
2020
In this work, feather-column 7YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were prepared by plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD). The anti-particle erosion test was carried out at room temperature to study the erosion behavior and failure mechanism of PS-PVD TBCs. The results showed that the particle erosion process of the PS-PVD TBCs experienced three stages of high-rate, medium-rate and slow-rate erosion. In order to improve the particle erosion resistance of the PS-PVD TBCs, different thicknesses of dense-layered coatings were prepared on the surface of the PS-PVD TBCs by air plasma spraying (APS). The effect of dense-layered thickness on the erosion behaviour of PS-PVD TBCs was discus…
Oxidation behavior of γ-TiAl coated with zirconia thermal barriers
2002
Abstract The applicability of the thermal barrier coating concept, which is an established concept for Ni-base alloys, was investigated for the first time for γ-TiAl. As potential bond coats, the following surface treatments were applied: Al-diffusion coating, Al-diffusion coating combined with short term pre-oxidation in air, short term pre-oxidation in oxygen of a rough surface finish γ-TiAl sample without aluminide coating. For the purpose of lowering the temperature of the γ-TiAl substrate surface, and thus, to prolong the life time, a zirconia thermal barrier coating (TBC) was applied on top of the above-mentioned modified TiAl surfaces. Oxidation resistance of the modified γ-TiAl allo…
Structure and thermal properties of a chitosan coated polyethylene bilayer film
2012
The thermal and the structural properties of chitosan coated polyethylene (PE) films were studied. The coating process did not significantly influence the thermal stability and the PE surface structure and/or composition of the polyolefin. Dehydration temperature of chitosan films reflected the strength of water/acetic acid/chitosan chains interactions. Glycerol, used as a plasticizer, formed new hydrophilic centres in the film matrix. Moreover it was better integrated in the CSEGLY than in CSAGLY network. Besides, the addition of a plasticizer in the chitosan films decreased the film degradation temperature. There were two main steps for the PE chitosan coated films degradation. The first …
Microstructure and mechanical properties of plasma spraying coatings from YSZ feedstocks comprising nano-and submicron-sized particles
2015
Atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) is an attractive technique to obtain nanostructured coatings due to its versatility, simplicity and relatively low cost. However, nanoparticles cannot be fed into the plasma using conventional feeding systems, due to their low mass and poor flowability, and must be adequately reconstituted into sprayable micrometric agglomerates. In this work, nanostructured and submicron/nanostiuctured powders of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) were deposited using APS, with a view to obtaining high-performance thermal bather coatings (IBC). All powders were reconstituted by spray-drying from different solid loading suspensions, followed by a thermal treatment of the spra…
Incident angle effect on heavy ion induced reverse leakage current in SiC Schottky diodes
2016
Heavy-ion induced degradation in the reverse leakage current of SiC Schottky power diodes shows distinct dependence on the angle of incidence. TCAD simulations have been used to study the physical mechanisms involved.
